Best single-player mode in a fighting game?

shepard?

Someone explain to me the fundamental difference between the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe story-mode implementation and Mortal Kombat 9's. I personally don't find there to be any huge difference between the two, but people overwhelmingly mention the latter and pretend the former never happened.

Is it that the overall quality of the fighting in MK vs DC was considered broken/subpar that causes people to take it out of consideration when it comes to conversations like this? Or was MK's story mode really THAT much better? And why?

People are mentioning MK9 not only because of its untouchable, godlike story mode, but also because other parts of the sigle player, such as the Challenge Tower and Krypt, were also great.

Okay, but I'm asking SPECIFICALLY about the story mode - what makes MK9's that much more improved from MK vs. DC's, for you?

The actual story of the game. MK9 felt like the original MK movie, meaning it was cheesy, epic fun.

Okay, gotcha. To me it was just as corny/cheesy/terrible as the story in MK vs DC, and was implemented pretty much identically. so I kept getting confused when general reaction/gaming press reacted as if MK vs DC hadn't happened a few years earlier. But if it basically comes down to "the writing/acting was better in MK9 than MK vs DC" then to each their reach. Thanks.

I think the problem with this thread is that "singleplayer mode" can mean anything. Some people are understanding it as the entire singleplayer suite of modes (hence, the amount of MK9 posts), while some of us take it to mean the singleplayer campaign.. I.E. story mode.

Seeing as how OP himself has listed a single story mode, I'm going to assume that's what he meant and therefore... MK9 story mode disqualified! :p Unless you truly think that MK9's story mode truly was the best, of course...

The DOA Dimensions Story mode on 3DS was pretty good.
I'm glad developer are finally not being lazy on the SP for fighting games.

*Take note capcom. Arcade with a 2D screen ending aint cutting it anymore.

A lot of us do think this, yes. So did the press; see (or rather listen to) Giantbomb's GOTY 2011 deliberation podcast, where they talked at length why NetherRealm's effort put into the game's story mode was something to be admired. I think 1up's review put it best:

In Mortal Kombat though, the entire Story Mode is like watching a full length CG movie. While it's incredibly corny, it's also oddly addicting as you'll find yourself wondering what ridiculous plot development will come next. It's also a great primer for the other modes, as it forces you to play a number of different characters which will help you decide on who you like best.

P4A story mode is up there for me.

Shit on MK9's story mode. If I were to give MK9 a score it would be a solid 5 with capcom fighters being 1s.

Adventure Mode in Super Smash Bros Melee was great. Played the fuck out of it.

Subspace Emissary in SSBBrawl was packed with enough raw fanservice to make the first playthrough decent, but ultimately the only really enjoyable component was the sticker collection/customization.

Persona 4 Arena has some fun storylines that would be enjoyable to watch in bed or something, but as a game it's really blech. Fights are few and far between, and they're all isolated one-round matches.

Again - that 1up quote reads to me like it could be describing MK vs. DC. The Giant Bomb game of the year discussion baffled me at the time because I couldn't believe people like Shoemaker and Gerstman were overtly gushing over some of the shittiest writing and voice-acting to occur in games that year. Sometimes they'd try to qualify it with the phrase "for a fighting game" or "it's supposed to be tongue in cheek" but I don't think that's really the case - I've seen/heard multiple interviews from Ed Boon, and I honestly believe he thinks that shit isn't "corny/cool" or "cheesy/cool" but legitimately "epic/cool" but even then - I just didn't see how it was functionally/aesthetically any different from MK vs. DC, which came out three years earlier.

Really?
I never bothered unlocking all the characters because of this mode.
So you never played the vs. mode either? All of the characters can be unlocked by just playing enough vs. matches. Alternatively you can play through the Classic mode and unlock most characters (except Luigi, and I think two other which can be unlocked in the challenges).

I think Adventure mode in Melee and Brawl are definately the greatest single player modes in fighting games.

foolishness. if you're playing fighting games alone, you're doing it wrong. unless you're in training mode.

Different people, diferent motivations, yadda yadda yadda...

Over the course of a franchise the contents of a story mode tend to have more lasting impact on future games than features specific to individual games in a series - for example, hours of training Charlies custom combos in the SFA series mean nothing now that he's dead in the story and won't be coming back, and custom combos themselves are no longer present in the current games of the series or its spin-offs.

Soul Calibur 2 had my favorite single player mode. I played through it 2 or 3 times and loved it, and I never put many hours into fighting games.

Mortal Kombat 9 was pretty much what I expected a fighting game single player story to be about, it was amazing.
Also every character was in it which was cool to try out different styles.

Smash brothers had some ok adventure modes, brawls story mode was good for the cutscenes and that part with all the games ships and Kirby riding the star was :o :O B^) godly lol

Perhaps it doesn't technically count, but Shaolin Monks was amazing on co-op. If not then I have to give my vote for Mortal Kombat 9, so much awesome level of content in that game. Great fun.

MK9
I actually enjoyed the campaign mode in Tekken 6 (probably because I was addicted to collecting the costumes)
The Smash Brothers ones (even though I dont remember playing them all that much)
Blazblue
Persona 4

MK9 or the first Soul Calibur.

ASW games have long story modes, but large amounts of them are redundant. Persona especially suffers from this, with those enormous, incredibly boring monologues and the fact that a lot of the stories are very similar. I feel like in both cases they should just have one story mode which is maybe ten hours in length, and cut out all that horrible fluff. I don't need six paragraphs of un-voiced monologue every time Yukiko is thinking about her bloody lunch box.
