best sniper rifle in a game EVER

the M16 rifle of the arcade version of Golgo 13

dunno if it could be considered a sniper rifle, but my vote is for the rail gun from Quake II...

honorary mention to Return to Castle Wolfenstein (not the free piece of shit game either).

Serious Sam: The First Encounter
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter

Fast reload speed, pinpoint accuracy rewarding great aim, high damage - everything you could ever want in a sniper.

I'd have to say Goldeneye. Not necessarily for the weapon itself, but just the memories of playing that level in the snow and sniping the patrolling soldiers. I'm sure nostalgia is messing with my memory a bit, but I still think those were some of the best death animations.
I agree. Those guys coming out of the huts and looking around really gave you a since that you were a far away sniper wrecking havock. Plus, it was found in the FIRST LEVEL! :D

Halo 2, it's no contest. If you've played Team Snipers for as long as I have, you realize it's the ultimate best way to play the game. A true contest of skill.

I don't play PC games, so there's probably a better rifle there.
Halo 2's sniper rifle represents everything wrong with console shooters in my opinion. People in those video use the sniper rifle and aim normally. They just sweep snipe and auto aim it up.

AWP. Hated by those who do not know how to use it and fight against it. Called the noob weapon, yet the hardest the weapon to use in the hands of a noob.

I would definitely agree with the Gears rifle being the best of any game. It's really satisfying to kill someone with it, but it's also pretty easy to use in comparison with other games. I'm normally really pathetic with rifles, particularly with the Resistance and Halo ones, but I can actually get some headshots (and more often than that, active reload downs) with the Gears rifle.

On the other hand, I can easily give to Time Splitters 2's sniper rifle the title of worst sniper rifle ever! The aiming was impossible!

I remember that, didn't it control exactly like Killzone's rifle?

don't know

Resident Evil 4
Call of Duty
Perfect Dark Zero
and as others have said, the Farsight.

I see a lot of Halo mentions in here, am I alone in thinking that was actually quite a poor sniper rifle? It worked...but there was no feeling of power like you get in other games.

The Half-Life crossbow is the most satisfying sniper weapon around.
Can't argue with that. I loved sniping off headcrabs and barnacles with that thing. :)
Seconded the RTCW sniper rifle. Realistic and fun at the same time. :D

I like the rail gun more than a sniper rifle. I'm not a sniper person in games. I'm not a fan of playing snipers either.

I'm not a CS player but in other games it's easier to reach a high skill level with the sniper type weapons than with the weapons that are easier for noobs.

No mention of all of Sniper Elite? More people need to play that game. Never has sniping been more satisfying for me in a videogame, and I've played every game that's been mentioned.

Luuuved the sniper in BF 1942, it was a gimped sniper but the levels made it awesome and when/if you got the hang of it you could use it as an close quarters assault rifle as well. :D

Actually wait, that's the best one by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.

It's gimpness meant I didn't need to worry about being yanked out of a blood pumping battle due to some douchbagio sitting a mile away all that often. But when you master it oh man does it kick ass hiding under a bush sniping at a base full of Nazis.

Then again in Red Orchestra, being lucky enough to have a sniper rifle in your hand is like being granted the power of god.

M82A1A from SOCOM 2. Great firing sound, nice kickback.

Gears isn't bad either but I hate the way you get an instant down with an active reload.

the M82 Barrett (im pretty sure that was the name) in The Specialist (mod for HL)
I love The Specialists, but I have to say this : Compared to real life, the barret is WAY underpowered in TS. It's meant for taking out vehicles and structures FFS. Still is satisfying when you get those headshot barret kills, and they do the break-their-back backflip death.

It was hand's down Halo's sniper rifle for me...

...till Gears of War... hot damn, headshots are so satisfying there that it'll never get old... it'll always draw an "oooooooooh" from both your teammates and the enemies...

And come on, Perfectly-Reloaded sniper bullets make you unstoppable... nothing like putting down both your enemies one after the other in a 2-on-1 scrap for the match... gotta love it...

Bolt action sniper from Resident Evil 4. The reloading animation was amazing.

I agree with this person! Bolt-action automatically makes a sniper rifle a lot more satisfying to use. Especially if the animation looks good.

America's Army for me. I like one with large impact and feel too it. I want the recoil to be shown visually, a thunderous bang, and so forth. I long-range hunt each yearly season myself so I can enjoy and appreciate a solid effort by the developers to make the gun feel good.

I hate when it feels like you're just clicking on the screen with a dot (crosshair) and that's that - total lack of recoil, impact, etc. Laser-based sniper rifles are often suffer from the problem. I don't think UT is ever too bad but I hate the one in BF 2142.

I actually wasn't very fond of SOF2's either; I disliked it quite a lot actually now that I think of it. Something about its feel was just off; maybe how the scope was presented or the shot sound. Same with the game's AK. However, SOF2 = by far the best shotgun in the genre period imo. Close urban quarters in that game and the regular shotgun is something I still load up monthly - wicked game.

Q3A railgun, such an awesome weapon plus I managed to master it on my old 56k dial up back in the day.

AWP is damn cheap and 1 hit kill even if you shoot someone in the foot, but still a fave gun just for that huge bang sound you can hear from anywhere in the level.
