Man. I should definitely get around to start playing Trails in the Sky at this point. I bought the box-set but it was definitely one of my "Rainy Day" games (next to Mother 3, Suikoden II, and Panzer Dragoon Saga).
Nice, didn't think there would be a possibility of Trails in the Sky getting an EU release (outside of DD). I imported the American version straightaway, but it's great to know European gamers will be able to buy it in their own land.
The only thing I'm personally worried about is the game getting an EU-exclusive limited edition like what P3P got, since I already own the game twice.
Anyway, I'd definitely recommend Trails in the Sky as well. Although, as other posters have warned, be aware that it is quite a dialogue-heavy game, more so than every RPG I know. Not that it's a bad thing, but I've heard many stories of people picking up the game unware of just what kind of RPG they're buying.
Those of you wondering about the EU release date for Trails in the Sky should know that Ghostlight are giving very strong hints that they will be releasing it in the UK very soon.
I was using the definition that furries are "fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes."
the prologue can be quite slow and dull, so it might not be just you. I think, unlike a lot of RPGs these days, there isn't really a central, urgent plot arc for a long portion of the game, which can put people off. Or maybe it's the abundance of talking? : P
In any case, I'd definitely wait until around the end of Chapter 2 to see if things start catching up for you.

Some of the other characters have more animal-like features.

Come to think of it, what if the character doesn't have any fur? Still a furry (technically)?
I'm thinking of the Bangaa and Seeq from FF12.
If you're looking for story on PSP, know Japanese, and don't mind that the game isn't an RPG, then there's a lot of visual novels out there on PSP.
I just started playing on PSP so I haven't got a story candidate.
Trails in the Sky is a good RPG but I found the story one of the most cliched and predictable in a while.
Its not bad, just not great and definitely not the best.
This seems like a topic that will be swayed greatly by the last RPG someone completed. Since Trails in the Sky was the last PSP RPG to come out in English it is freshest in peoples minds.
TitS or Tactics Ogre. Can't go wrong with these two.

TitS I would not hesitate to nominate as the best "adventure JRPG", as during FC the plot spirals out bigger and grander without ever getting out of control (GRANDIA!).

It's that good?
I'm only just past the castle where you rescue the two kids but I find it a bit boring so far.
I guess I'm only an hour in so I won't judge it yet.
Estelle and Joshua are more on a collision course with the plot, and until then it's a story about them, really. I figure that's the best way to describe it.
I have to say, FFT, majorly because you won't really understand it unless you know everyone involved, and their connections to every other person, so it takes awhile in the menu/ glossary. Plus, there was more than one over-arching plot (Delita being the head of the most treacherous one) which gave the game depth and the feel of a strategic war game.
I'd say Trails in the Sky also, like many others above me, but more because of the setting it layed out. The story, I feel, is better seen as a prologue, and once you look at it like that, it can be taken to be interesting, dynamic, and titillating, in that you'll want the next game immediately after it.

I never thought about that, but I suppose that is possible. However, it might also work in the game's favour, since people may be more sure of their feelings for the game, compared to say a game they played months ago.
Although in my case I beat the first Trails in the Sky almost a year ago, so I definitely don't fall into this category.
Kingdom Hearts is getting mentions? The stories from 1 and 2 were an incoherent mess. I haven't played BBS, but unless it literally casts those entire two stories aside I can't see it being much better.
I love Trails in the Sky, but it's not the best story in a PSP RPG.
#1 is Persona 2: Innocent Sin. My favorite Persona game and the one with the craziest story that continues to surprise you and characters that are deeply flawed but human.
#2 would be The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, for all the reasons people mentioned
#3 for me would be Jeanne d'Arc. Level-5 managed to give the age-old story a clever twist which works very well.
Of course props to Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, and even Crisis Core (sans the poetry crap). Even Half-Minute Hero's story was entertaining.
I really enjoyed the fiction/non-fiction mash-up in Jeanne d'Arc. It may not be the absolute best PSP RPG story but it's the most unique and it deserves credit for that.
Everytime I read a PSP rpg thread I swear I'll get more of 'em but end up going at a snails pace doing so (Crisis Core late last year, Star Ocean FD a couple months ago).
Does the Persona 2 remake play like the first one? I never made it out of the first "dungeon" (school?) in that yet. Stupid first person mazey perspective!
Also can a game with a title as generic as "The Legend of Heroes" really be that great? I remember one of those came out very early on in the PSPs life and the title alone turned me away from it. I know that's totally shallow and all but yeesh!

The first trilogy released for PSP (from Namco) were updated versions of old PC games. The localization is among the worst on the PSP from what I've seen (haven't played them).
Trails in the Sky is a newer game and it has pretty much spun off to be it's own series at this point separate from LoH (which itself spun off the Dragon Slayer series). It has it's own trilogy plus two sequels and a cross-over spin-off.
Ohmygod! Definitely getting TitS. Ghostlight did a good job with the P3P CE. Been meaning to import the game from the US, but I guess I'll wait a little longer.
I'm really not sure why Trails is as highly thought of as it is. It's not bad by any means, but the crazy praise it gets on GAF confuses me.
Yes, Estelle and Joshua are better developed than your average JRPG leads. Unfortunately the rest of the story is rather generic and plays out at such a plodding pace. The barebones RPG portions of the game are pretty bland as well. It looks like SC improves things a bit, but I just didn't care for the first game all that much.
Tactics Ogre would be my first choice without a doubt.
True, but I would still argue that it has a very good story as well. We finally fill some plot holes about certain characters and events that have transpired.
Everyone saying Trails in the Sky; tell me when it picks up. I'm 13 hours in and it's been a string of fetch quests so far. The most exciting thing plotwise was

I thought the entire cast of characters was one of the best developed in any video game I've played - of course Estelle and Joshua, but also the flippant jokester
yet secretly shrewd
Olivier, the intelligent and charming Colonel Richard
who had very understandable and rational motivations for a supposed villain
, the nobleman in Grancel who cared more about fishing than his wife
but she ended up getting into the Fisherman's Club while he failed(!)
, etc., etc. I loved that the town NPCs had their own lives and their own stories that would progress on their own as Estelle and Joshua progressed through theirs - it didn't feel like the world revolved around you like it does in so many RPGs. That's also why I liked that the Liberl News, even as it documented events they were involved in,
never mentioned Estelle and Joshua's names - they're just players in a larger story
. The world of Liberl itself was very well fleshed out; the presence of many books giving insight into its history, economics, culture, science, and art was a great touch. It's a place that feels like it exists beyond the confines of the narrative presented, which is a excellent achievement for any fictional world.
I can understand why people would be disappointed if they were expecting constant action and twists galore
although the ending completely blindsided me on that score
, but I liked the relaxed pacing because it allowed for the qualities I praised above. Do all RPGs have to be about saving the universe from the forces of ultimate evil? I confess I find constantly high stakes to be a little artificial. Sometimes the problems we face in life are just how to save crops from being eaten by bunnies. Of course, there are bigger issues that develop in Trails in the Sky, but I'm glad I got the chance to get to know and love its characters and world before I had to worry about protecting them.
I found the battle system very enjoyable as well. The orbment system of character customization allows many different battle strategies, and trying to figure out the right time to use my crafts and S-Breaks and take advantage of the turn bonuses kept me on my toes. It's not the best RPG battle system I've ever played, but it has enough interesting features to make it one of the better ones.
In the end, Trails in the Sky drew me in like few games have. It was an experience akin to reading one of my favorite novels. It is still vivid in my mind months after playing it and knowing that it is just the first part of a larger narrative only makes it better. It is easily among my favorite games of all time and I look forward to playing the rest of the series, either whenever XSEED is able to translate them, or when I learn enough Japanese to play the originals.
I love the game, but I have to disagree. Zack's story is great, but the general plot around Genesis is mediocre (I don't hate the character, but he is misused).
I'd say :
- Birth by Sleep
- FFIV
- Valkyrie Profile Lenneth
- Persona 3 Portable
And part of FF Tactics (everything concerning Ramza and Delita. Not the rest).
Trails in the Sky is really that good? Does the goodness also cover the battle system? I watched videos and it looked boring. Is it more of a grid based system? What's it comparable to?
