Best time to buy a PS3?

The best time was last week when CC and Amazon threw in some accessories to sweeten the deal. I don't see how selling the 5 free movies would be doable seeing as everyone who wanted a BR Player/PS3 jumped on this deal. I can just see craigslist and ebay flooded with all these BR titles.

I'd say best wait and see if any of the stores will offer free accessories, or even gift cards again.

Buy it today. No reason to wait.

Blu-ray offer is a good deal. Like someone said earlier, resell the movies on ebay and you've essentially got yourself a $399 PS3.

Blu-ray offer is available at Sony Store in San Francisco in Metreon. I dont know about other places.

Even if there aren't enough games out that you want to play right now, just a few, get those then load up the Playstation Store to mess around around in there. Demos, trailers etc, all great esp on a 1080p set up.

Also, wtf @ "buy it at $199 and $299". PS3 isn't a toy, people. Stop crying if you cant afford it.

I agree with this guy. What gives you fools the idea that a video game console should ever cost 199-299 dollars?

sorry, dont know what the hell I was thinking. Videogames are definitely NOT toys and should never ever be affordable under any circumstances.

Screw a PS3 get a PS2 if you have that get a Xbox360 if you have that get a Wii if you have that only then can you buy a PS3.

I'd just wait until a game you really want is out. I keep being tempted to buy one now but then I remember that the only game I really want is Sigma so once I've finished that it'll be sitting idle for a couple of months. I'll probably wait until my birthday in October since that'll get Leipzig and TGS out of the way and we'll know if anything like the upgraded Sixaxis is going to be packed in in the immediate future.

Couldn't agree more, i feel guilty everytime i even consider buying one at the current price.

Funny how people in US are whining about the $499 price, which is about 360€ when we here in Europe have to get our PS3's ranging from 599€ ($830) to 699€ ($965). Yeah, the 699€ does include 2 games and another controller, but still.

For me 399 or 499 with some good free stuff. That could be new or used mind you.

I keep hearing people say the software BC is bad now. I thought it was supposed to be pretty good with a few minor glitches.

Best time to buy a PS3 will be end of August or September. You can then work your way through Resistance, Motorstorm and some of the PSN games in the run up to all the great first party games coming out from September, starting with Lair and Heavenly Sword.

Game drought ends September. It does feel like forever away right now though.

I've only read the original post, I don't know what the others have told you but:

I still say wait until the fall.
+1

Certainly after Leipzig and TGS. The good games will be out on September-November while it is highly possible that Sony will announce a further/real price cut this time.

I love it when somebody argues that the best thing to do is be 1 generation behind. Like somebody mentioned before if that's your thing then gaming forums aren't really for you, because posters talk about current games for 3 months then just move on to other games (depending on gaming droughts and whatnot).

I used to be a generation behind when I was a kid, because i never had any money and asked my parents for games or I borrowed games from friends at school. Now I'm older (22) and kind of a tech freak so I buy things when they are priced right and I can get the most functionality out of them.

(Has a PS360)

I am waiting for $399, rumble and the full version of GT5. I really want a Blu-Ray player so even the $599 is tempting but it's a hard purchase to justify when I already own a 360 for my gaming needs.

I decided to pick it up on Tue. for several reasons
- Got the HD tv now, so I need blu-ray
- I have no PS2 at the moment and a huge backlog of games I want to play
- There are enough PS3 games to keep me busy at the moment (Resistance, Motorstorm, Sigma, Stardust, Calling All Cars)

and I have no regrets.

I want to get a PS3, I had a difficult time passing it by yesterday at BestBuy. I took a peek at the software section and reminded myself why I haven't bought one yet.
When there are more than 1-2 decent games it will be 'time'

I've got a Wii and have been waiting for the right time to buy either a 360 or a PS3. PS3 I see as coming into it's own next year, so by year end 2008 i'll see what's going on with it.

They're soon releasing the elite x360 in Australia, and I MUST have a machine to play Skate on, so maybe that'll be it. Although, my friend has just said he'll sell me his replacement x360 (his redringed) for $400 australian, so he can buy the Elite when it comes out, which seems like an excellent deal. He seems to think the base level 360s will drop in price when the Elite finally hits.

I (finally convinced the wife and) am getting a PS3 after work this afternoon. :D

$500 is still about $100 too much for what the PS3 offers at this point in time, but my experience with the 360 made me paranoid about software-emulated backwards compatability (RSC2 or bust). A lot of my games are 'niche', and I want an EE in the box for peace of mind. I also want a BD player, and 5 meh movies for free isn't too bad of a bonus. Also, for some reason, HOME excites the hell out of me. There isn't a lot on the system that truly interests me besides VF5 and RR7, but there is some great looking stuff on the horizon.

To soften the blow, I decided earlier this week to do the generational game library purge to get rid of all the games I'll probably never really miss until I can get them for $3 used in a year or two. I also traded in about 60 DVD's...anything that hasn't been watched in the past year. I should end up with about $200+ in credit, and $300ish for the system is totally justifiable IMO.

I just have to make Phantom of the Opera one of my free movie picks. Wife's stipulation. :(

for me its when I beat at least half of the games in my gc/ps2/psp/ds backlog. I have gone on a game buying hiatus (except for galaxy, brawl, and phantom hourglass) until I finish some of what I have. Judging by my backlog and the amount of free time I have to play, I will be getting a PS3 when the PS5 comes out.

Funny how people in the US are whining about health care when it's basically free in Europe. There's a reason why things are a bit more expensive in Europe. I know it kind of sucks, but if you look at the big picture it's really for the better.

Still $100 too much? Don't worry, given the price of games nowadays, one bad game purchase will nullify any perceived savings.

True. I just have a hard time spending $500 on anything. It's even harder to justify dropping that much money on a system that (at the moment) doesn't offer a substantially better gaming experience than the 360 that I already own (when it works).

I bought my PS3 last week. I love buying right after a price drop because you know you're getting a good value for the moment. I can see some people waiting for the next drop - but there's no harm in getting one now - especially if you do not have a 360. HD gaming is finally catching up. Now I have the WII-S3 combo - I find it more attractive than the WII-60. When the 360 is 199 when 65nm tech - then I might bite, but for now the PS3 is rocking.

No need to IMO, I think by the time the 360 hits that price (summer/fall next year?), the PS3 library will have games that will match or surpass (depending on your tastes of course) anything on the 360. I'm not talking graphics or anything, I'm just talking about variety of games and what they offer. PS3 library in 08 will be fierce.

The recent E3 sold me, for the future. I have a 720p, so I'm not fully enticed by the blu-ray stuff. I will without a doubt get one when LBP hits. If you guys give me a bit of advice on what I may enjoy this fall, I'll probably pick one up soon. Here is a small sample of my favourite games for this and last Gen, so using this can you guys point me towards stuff I'll probably like.

Gears, Crackdown, Dead Rising, GRAW2, Oblivion, Turtles XBLA (yes, I love coop that much), Prime, Smash Bros, Wind Waker, Halo 2 (multi), Kortor, Brothers in Arms

To my dissapointent (and stupidity) I missed out on the ps2. So, list me up GAF. For more help:

I don't enjoy JRPGS
I love, LOVE good western RPGs
Not into sport games
I do enjoy non-generic stuff (EBA, Phoenix Wright, bla bla)

Help me spend my monies.

My Brother already have it so i can play with MGS4 when it comes out
but if some day i bought it it has to be 199$ or am not buying

lol, that is exactly what I amw aiting for too.

You guys wont be Junior Members by then so I'll be looking forward to your LTTP posts around that time.
well, I got it at launch, but I am talking about the general people out there. if you aren't into it to a degree to have already owned it yet, then end of 07 will be a great time to start. this is generally speaking. for some, they'll get it when that special game releases- like MGS4, Killzone 2, GT5 and others.

woah, see you in 2011- though I don't think it'll ever get that cheap. lol

I'm waiting for $399, but it's gonna be painful. I had NO interest until E3 this year, but the show really turned my around... I really want one now, and I have a feeling it's gonna be a long while until we get a $399 sku... :(

I agree somewhat, but its a good value right now, and there are some solid titles rolling out within the next month or two. Playstation Store has new content rolling through all the time as well to fill int he gaps. Getting one now means you can play all the great 08 titles as they drop next year. so if you're not completely broke or some kid waiting for your parents to buy one for you, Id say just go get it now.
