Jagged Aliance 2 is one that is amazing (and probably the best) but are there any other games like that ?

There is also coming Dead State which look amazing imo.
Fallout 1/2 +- wasn't so good on tactics side but it had ton of weapons and different ammunition
Fallout Tactics is amazing combines good tactics and massive arsenal.

any other games like that ?

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars?

I'm not sure how similiar it is but it is a turn based tactical game involving guns.

I came in to say Jagged Alliance 2, but I see that's a bit unnecessary. I think that's still king in this genre.

I think the old X-Com games might be worth looking into (the first 3 games in a particular). JA2 has much better tactical combat, but the X-Com games have a very interesting overall strategy layer. There's also the new X-Com game from last year, but I found it a bit disappointing (the randomness can be overly frustrating).

There's Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3 which I would highly recommend. The overall structure is more linear and it's not very replayable but it's still a lot of fun to play through, and the tactical combat feels unique compared to others in the genre.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars for the 3DS

Yes, really. It has no business being as good as it is. But it has solid mechanics, a nice upgrade system, long-ish campaign, and a bunch of one-off challenge maps.

Yeah and it's like <$10 these days. Extremely good value.

Not to mention still the best damn envioremental destruction system ever seen in videogame.

It was pretty good. The cover system is a bit unclear and the camera is wonky in some spaces.

I personally found even more flaws:
- The randomness can be really high. I've had instances of moving right next to an enemy and still getting a low hit chance. Situations like that feel very unfair. You also have critical hits making a huge impact on the gameplay which functions as a dice roll essentially.

- Enemy behaviour is arbitrary in a weird way. They can suddenly spawn right next to you and they always get a free instant movement turn when first spotted.

- Stealth tactics are non-existant. If you see the enemy, they see you as well (there's only one small exception to this if you have one specific skill).

- Class system gives you less freedom to customize your characters or improvise during combat (ie, picking up different guns during combat isn't possible).

You might still enjoy the game though. But I think games like Valkyria Chronicles and the old X-Com games are much better.

XCOM EU and Frozen Synapse are really good.

I like Valkyria as well but it's very limited tactically if you want to go for high ranks (which give more exp)

Vlakyria has even less customisation and stealth tactics though. And the enemy behaviour is often scripted and predictable, the game is more about figuring out the best path through the map. XCOM might have some wonky AI behaviour but it's a lot less predictable.

Jagged Alliance 2 is the yet-unmatched-king of the genre and you won't find anything topping it; not even trying hard, really. But you can try Silent Storm: mediocre management-strategic layer but superlative tactical combat.
Frozen Synapse is also very good.

How is new xcom ?
Half-assed.

Turn based and it lets you actually aim your gun. Also comes with destructible environments and really do help or hinder in the game.

Shame most haven't heard of it.

That's true. Although I think X-Com's combat system is close enough to JA2 and earlier X-Com games that they can be directly compared. VC feels more like its own thing. Maybe that's why I felt the new X-Com was so disappointing, because there were tactics I wanted to use but aren't possible.

Completely forgot about Silent Storm. Amazing game, ahead of its time.

- that was probably the cover system being weird, the AI also cheats on dicerolls on the higher difficulties
- enemies spawning next to you was a bug
- stealth suit brah
-blow up walls if you need to improvise

I bought this a few days ago but I've only played the first two missions. Really need to go back to it.

The first few missions usually suck in turn-based strategy games. They're almost always slow and boring because the games are usually complex so they want you to very slowly learn how everything works. Once you get past that though, they become excellent. Same goes for Shadow Wars.

I love valkyria chronicles but tactic in that game is very very very very shallow. Most of the time scout can win level in one turn.

VC2 psp is turd

VC has other good sides but tactic isn't really their good side.

^^This, I can not stress how much I enjoyed this game, fresh ideas to move the genre forward. The sequel on PSP was ok, but the story was no way as good as the original.

Other recent picks

Ghost Recon Shadow wars 3DS
X-com EU (not as good as originals, still a great game)
Any Advance Wars game

Lets hope the success if X-com means other developers will take note and see there is still a market for these games.

Neat, looks like SEGA copied that for VC, just polished it off and made it all anime.

Then again the idea of moving your character in real time and aiming in a turn based game wasn't exactly new, gived scorched earth and worms... They just put that into 3D with such games.
