Best version of Sim City?

Lost Fragment

Obsessed with 4chan
Dearest GAF, I've had a hankerin for some Sim City action lately. I could just play Sim City SNES, which I've played the shit out of over the years, but I think it's high time I play one of the other versions. Which do you recommend?

2000 is outstanding if you haven't played that yet.

I really want to pick up a copy of the SimCity Box but probably won't for a couple months.

I didn't gel with 4 at first but I went back about a year ago and really had fun with it. Makes me wish there was a new Sim City in the works.

Despite all the advances the series made, I still prefer the SNES version. Always felt more accessible (largely by way of it's simplicity) and I love the music to death.

Ahhh, Sim City SNES. The game that got me into management/strategy games.

I'd go for a bit of Sim City 2000, the interface won't scare you away, and I don't think it got as anal as some of the later entries did.

Wonder if I've still got my save games.....

Ignore all those "2000" or "Classic version" answer. Sim City 4 is the best, most feature complete version of the game.

It's also the hardest.

Of what I've played of the series, it's not even close. 2000, for the PC of course, is the best. Simply an unbelievably good game... it's an all-time classic, really one of the great PC games. Gameplay, graphics, music, design... it's hard to imagine it being much better than it is. Maxis couldn't, evidently, SC3k wasn't nearly as good. I admit I haven't played much of 4, though.

Sim city 2000.

I played the shit out of that as a kid. Would leave it running all day as i went to school :lol

Also throwing in a vote for 2000, though I haven't really played much of any version past that.

Every now and then I think of picking up SC4 but never do for some reason. I really had a lot of fun with older entries in the series.

I was going to vouch for 2000, but this man speaks the truth.

SimCity 4 Deluxe (SC4 + Rush Hour add-on) is the only correct answer.

It really is the best.

It can, and should be improved, but until Sim City 5 finally comes out...its the best option.

I disagree, its the only one I can easily make money on.

I start making money in year 1 and then never go in the red.

How can anyone throw in votes for old versions of Sim City being the best version without having even played the newer versions?

With the Rush Hour expenstion it isn't that difficult. You get an easy option then, and cities grow like crazy if you just follow the basics.

I always thought the original SimCity was by far the toughest of those that I had played. I could never manage to fill the entire map and still keep everything running smoothly and profitably.

I completely broke 2000 from playing it so much. All municipal services would have A+ ratings, and I could keep taxes as low as 6% and still be in the black, or as high as 10% and still have a happy citizenry.

Though, part of that is due to the old phonebook-sized SC2K strategy guide I have laying around here somewhere. It had some really entertaining interviews with the game staff in it, too. I wonder if any of those have been posted online anywhere.

This is it. SC4 with rush hour is unbeaten in the genre.

Sim City 2000 was definitely my favourite.

Sim City SNES is also pretty awesome, though its best feature is Dr. Wright. The bonuses you get are also pretty sweet. Casino or Carnival?

Sim City 4 is the right answer. (with the fixes and Rush Hour expansion I mean)

-Best looking one
-The most gameplay
-You can truly manage trafic and have an impact
-You can truly make money if you have half a brain - no need to cheat here ot quickly have a megalopolis

There's always something do to in Sim City 4. In ALL the previous games I am constantly hitting some point where I need to accelerate the game because I have nothing to do and need to "wait". This is what pulled me from all the previous games. In Sim City 4 you can play litterally forever. There's always something to change, tweak, improve, etc. It's incredibly well done and better paced that all other Sim City games.

I'm very surprised the Snes got a good version of Sim City.

How about Simcity 64 and Simcity Creator on the Wii? Any good?

I'd say SC 2000, too. But I've only played 4 without expansion. How much does Rush Hour change? I liked 4, but I never managed to survive for long and the areas were so small. If Rush Hour really improves much, I should probably get that one.
By the way, how is SC 2000 on PSX (the one on PSN)? What about the DS ones?

Alrighty, checking out 2000 and Sim City 4, then. Thanks.

Guess I should go ahead and get the bundle anyway. Didn't even know such a thing existed.

I keep trying to play Sim City 4, because objectively it's the most well designed, best working sim city, and yet I can never get into it. There's all these "network add on" packs to get things working their best, and I can't stand the design of the game, how it splits everything into regions. I realize the region concept is a more sensible view of how a city actually works, but it's not as fun or elegant as Sim City 2000. Perhaps if you could easily scroll between regions it wouldn't be a big deal, but that's not the case.

I want someone to make a complex, more modern, well modelled Sim City, that's still a bit on the scaled down side. I think I kind of want a Sim Neighbourhood game.

Simcity 2000 and Simcity 4 are the two best ones. 3000 sucked and the original is too dated, missing too many core features.

I loved Simcity 2000 but I honestly can't imagine why'd you play that over Simcity 4 today, especially if you have the Rush Hour expansion pack.

You could easily build a entirely self contained city in one region, there are benefits to making smaller industrial/commercial/residential districts - especially if you want to create a farming community but it's not required at all. The first few mega cities I built in Simcity 4 were completely contained inside one region. You can effectively ignore that feature if it's too complex for you but it adds options if you want to take them.

I don't understand what Regions are changing. You can completely ignore this aspect of the game if you want. Every SimCity games are giving you a terrain to make a city on and it never expands. In Sim City 4 is the same thing EXCEPT that if you make other cities, you can influence your previous works. It's just added bonus really.

2000 and 4 Deluxe were awesome.

This is not important though. What is actually important is the following: Where the fuck is our Sim City 5. No, Sim City Societies was CRAP, Sim City Creator as well. Please, we want a real new one!

No you're right that's true. However, the region map does get split up into regions of random size and so you're a bit constrained in that sometimes an interesting bit of the map is tied to a small region.

If the way regions were handled was more refined and smoother (ie no loading or transitions) I wouldn't really have any gripes with it.
