Best VGAs?...Best VGAs

I would like to thank Geoff and Spike for an overall better show this year. Many improvements, including respect for the presenters.

Obviously i would like more than 4 awards presented, less cursing, less guns and violence in content, less aggression all throughout. they had obnoxious drums in the journey music for crying out loud, less "nerd talk" and pandering, but here's to the future.

I had fun, it was fun. I was still embarrassed though, but a great first step toward a relevant future.

cheers.

No complaints other than the lackluster number of 'awards' presented.

There was no offensive jokes or anything. Samuel Jackson stuff was kind of funny I guess, even if it was essentially the same joke over and over.

There were not a lot of "world premieres", but what they did show was amazing.

By far the best VGAs.

Posted elsewhere, but I think it should be mentioned that we were flat out lied to in regards to new game announcements. Otherwise the show was fairly enjoyable.

USA Today said:
And in addition to announcing awards such as Game of the Year – the nominees are Assassin's Creed III, Dishonored, Journey, Mass Effect 3, The Walking Dead: The Game – new trailers for already announced games such as The Last of Us will be shown, as will five debut trailers.

"For hard-core gamers this is the first place you will ever see those new games," says the show's executive producer Mark Burnett. "Imagine if the Academy Awards was on and they announced five movies that no one has ever heard of. That is the equivalent. You will be on a rip-roaring, two-hour ride of television."

I wish they actually made an Video game awards show that was more respected and not biased.
There was literally only 5 seconds of Nintendo footage at this show, and the whole thing just reeked of testosterone.

Yah, and the sole mention of WiiU the entire night was Pachter in the pre-show exclaiming how much of a failure it is

and there was no new retro revival reveal

no look at next gen (maybe Phantom Pain?)

stupid jokes

every one was high

It was a decent show though. Better than last year and somewhat mature, I guess. Very good showings for the known games aside from Bioshock. Geoff is a liar though >:(

I think they said they would have 5 world premiere exclusives, not 5 unannounced games. That probably included exclusive trailers:

Phantom Pain
Dark Souls
Tomb Raider
Last of Us
Bioshock: Infinite
This, exactly. "World premiere" is ambiguous to get people to tune in -- people read too far into it and overly hyped themselves.

This is, by far, the best VGA's ever.

BY FAR.

Usually I give these things a C, but this one gets an A.

Bravo, Geoff and team.

And I am SO happy The Walking Dead won. :) In your face, Michael Pachter.

OH AND OH MY GOD DARK SOULS II <33333

New trailers for already announced games, in addition to 5 debut trailers.

Not ambiguous at all. The differentiation is there.

I thought it was good...besides the absurd amount of commercials, they had some great idea's,the character stuff was cool,Jackson stuff in game was funny, orchestra was good...I liked it.

I'd say best not just because of the few awesome revels but less offensive. Except the whole "I'm a nerd" "hello fellow nerds" those douchebags need to GTFO.

Keighley's bald face fibbing aside, I thought it was the best VGA.

No stupid Augmented Reality bullshit. And the quality of the show in general was pretty good.

It wasn't cringeworthy other than the few scenes with those two who wouldnt stop going nerd this nerdsplosion that, I'll give them that. However, it seemed neither very award showey nor delivering in new game reveals unless I missed something.

Yeah, I think we can agree that this year we finally had a VGAs worth watching. That orchestra was great.

Given that the majority of the disappointment stems from the word-twisting and number-boosting as the pre-show hype from Keighley, you can probably take a cue from this and ensure that everybody's expectations are in check next time. The VGAs should be a big enough event to attract enough viewers without having Geoff pad the reveal count.

Also, 16 Valve guys not revealing HL3 was a heartbreaker

Someone tell me what parts of the show were "worth watching" aside from the new trailers.

(Honest question, I skipped everything else and want to know what to go back for, if anything)

Yeah, I wish there was more time for the actual awards. The Jackson skits were fine but I think they could have gotten away with like half of those and used that time for more rewards.

That actually was pretty good. I think the only thing I cringed at was when the announcer congratulated Kojima on the 25th anniversary of Metal Gear Solid. Other than that, it actually wasn't offensive this year.

All I wanted out of the VGA's was for TWD to win, just so I could see Famous and Video Games on Spike TV.

That happened, thank you Dorito Pope.

The show itself was a little bit better. I honestly liked Zachary as the host last year I just didn't like the dumb ass shit the show runners made him do for skits. He just carried more geek cred and was more genuine.

The reveals though were awful. In the past we got first ME3 trailer, Transformers FOC, Batman AC, etc. This year we got games we already knew about, DLC and just Dark Souls. Like I said in the other thread though I think this is more showing we are at the end of this generation and they won't be showing off next gen till E3.

Bad on Geoff, Spike and GT lying and misleading people though.

I was kind of surprised that The Walking Dead won, what with people being upset and all. Until I realised *that*.

Next year they need to actually set up some time for the actual award giving. Most of the trailers were worth it, but things like the Spartan Ops and AC3 DLC "trailers" were just time-wasters. Also too many commercials. Only like four or five awards were actually presented which I think is shameful. It was a step up, but it's still less of an awards show and more of a circle jerk.

It was substantially better than last year. Totally watchable, the cringeworthy moments came from people like Wayans and Levi rather than the show's producers.

It's already up on the official site as PS3/360.

You do know that next-gen games will still be releasing on 360/PS3 right?

The first game they showed off thats coming to PS3/360 will most likely be a launch title for whatever console releases next year, or will release on it.

VGA 10

+ Live Orchestra and Composers
+ Sam Jackson as host, and those game mode clips
+ All Access Second Show (if only to avoid amurrica's ad bombardment every 5 mins)
+ Kojima troll Phantom Pain
+ Last of Us trailer
+ South Park trailer
+ Dark Souls 2 reveal
+ Walking Dead GOTY
+ Pachter being proven wrong again

- Giving out awards on the preshow
- Marlon Wayans making your host almost cry, talking about pubes and plugging his movie
- AC3 DLC trailer showing nothing
- Zach Levi, nerds, nerdmachine

Verdict:
Substantial improvement over last year, not something to be totally embarrassed by.
the way those awards are handled preshow has to change, so fucking awkward

Reaching the point where this type of show will be as good as it can be

Best VGA so far, glad to see some improvements from previous years. I didn't read anything about the 5 all new game reveals beforehand so that bit didn't bother me going into it.

It's a television awards show, so of course there's some stupid stuff. If you ever watch the Oscars or Grammys or any other mainstream awards show there are stupid skits and pandering bits in them as well, so I never expect some thoughtful look back at the year's best games. Glad to see some of the winners they picked and moment of the show for me was ignoring the majority of the Dark Souls 2 trailer, assuming it was Skyrim DLC or Dragon Age 3, then being shocked to see the glowing orange letters of the title.

it wasn't as bad as last year..but an interactive show winning best game of the year just ruined it for me to be honest.

Still a total failure as an awards show. Just rename it to "Gaming 2013 Sneak Peek" or something if that's what you want to do, don't shit all over the people you're pretending to be celebrating by giving them cheap awards preshow and barely letting them have a presence once the event actually starts.

I'll eat crow, because this was THE first VGA's I felt delivered on a lot of promises.

The things I wasn't cool with though are short this year:

Handing out major awards to devs on the carpet on the pre show is rude.

Gaben not accepting the award for Half Life 2 is a crime. :P

I completely hated the show in previous years, despised it to the point I wanted Geoff to get fired. This year is the first year where I feel the show was entertaining. Although having the two streams was a great part of it. I can't imagine sitting for so many commercials. The way the awards are presented is still sub par though.

However, this has been the best VGA show hands down in its 10 year history.

Very good summary, I agree. Best VGA, still ways to go, but on the right track no doubt.

The Good: This year's VGA show was the best VGAs ever.

The Bad: This year's show was still bad.

Last year's show (and the year before that) was a 2/10. This year's show is a 4/10 or 5/10.
