Best "Zeldaesque" games for PS3 and PS2?

I have a backwards compatible PS3 and would like to play a game in the same vein as Zelda. I know the obvious answer would be to just play Zelda but I'm not quite to the point where I'm ready to buy a Wii. Ideally it would be a PS3 game but I'd settle for a PS2 game if I had to. This doesn't need to be a Zelda clone, rather more of a "recommended if you like Zelda" type of game.

I was thinking about Folklore, and I have Demon's Souls arriving on May 5th. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Demon's Souls is the best Zelda game never made. As in, Nintendo could never make it, they will never make it (obviously) and they'll never make a Zelda game half as good as it.

Import it, love it, and forget about Zelda. Welcome the new king.

Anyone who says otherwise clearly hasn't played Demon's Souls.

Edit: Since you already have Demon's Souls coming, I find this thread to serve no purpose. :lol Also I should have read the whole top post. Awesome. Seriously though. Demon's Souls. Period.

Edit 2: Not Folklore. It's nice, but it's no Zelda. Shadow of the Colossus is an amazing 5 hour romp but I wouldn't really call it Zelda. I'm sure there are other games that are closer to Zelda but I can't think of any because of, ahem, Demon's Souls.

Once they localize it, I will try it out.

But I would agree with the 2nd poster, the best Zelda clone I have played is Okami.

Yeah, it already gets recommended on GAF alot. But I've always thought that BG&E was a really good extention of the Zelda template that did lots of things better then recent Zelda games have.

While Shadow of the Colossus isn't really totally like Zelda, I find that most people who like Zelda like SOTC. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I will definitely pick up Okami and Beyond Good and Evil. Do they support widescreen and progressive scan?

iirc Okami only has widescreen, no 480p

hdgames says this on BG&E PS2
1/25/2004@5:53:48 PM: PAL version supports Progressive Scan.
10/14/2006@2:26:05 PM: NTSC version supports progressive scan
1/21/2008@8:35:24 PM: The supposed 16:9 is merely a screen with black areas on the top and bottom that you can expand into a 16:9 picture. The 480p exists, but if you turn it on you lose screen area! Why in the world you lose screen area on 480p beats me, but you do.

I haven't personally played it (always wanted to though), but I hear Dark Cloud 2 is probably close to what you're wanting.

Not even a little. Dark Cloud 2 is the textbook definition of "Goddamnit stop making games where not having a player's guide makes you miss out on crucial shit." It's a great game, but it's an absolute nightmare to just "play and enjoy." I'd recommend Rogue Galaxy before Dark Cloud 2, but really, neither of them are a Zelda-like.

BG&E is great, but it has gotten a little dated.

Okami gets monotonous.

I dont see how BG&E is dated. Its art style still holds up, the voice acting is great, the characters and story kick other zeldalikes in the nuts. Its still short but we already knew that.

Zelda has never been about the story. So, that's not exactly hard to do.

Perhaps, it's possible, BG&E feels dated because I've played Demon's Souls. Honestly, every game feels dated because of that. Since putting it down (after logging a bit over 100 hours in 2 weeks), I haven't been able to stick with a game for more than 3 hours. It was such a kick in my ass that gaming itself has become bland. Which is a shame, because I have a backlog of like 300 games sitting in boxes in my closet. Just from the last 5 years :(

Edit: I'd link to my review of Demon's Souls but it's mostly fanboi slobbering and incoherency because I wrote it after playing it nonstop for like 16 hours. There's some insight into the possible (or not possible) localization in it, and it shouldn't be hard to google up. I also explain why it's basically the best console game ever made.

Does it have English text? I can't read Japanese. Also, is it region free? Because, if so, I'll order it within a couple days.

The answer to both of your questions is yes. Just be sure to order the Asian version, not the Japanese version.

BG&E dated? not in the slightest, still holds up really well

Dark Cloud 2 isn't very Zelda-esque. I don't know what people see in that game tbh, never got into it (randomly generated dungeons, ugh)

No I'm not.

Have no desire to play a game I can't understand. Again, when and if they localize it, I will try it out. But until then, I have too many games I can actually understand and enjoy in my backlog than to try and muddle through Japanese text.

Edit: Oh, missed the post about the Asian version being completely in English. Is the game region locked? And is there VA in the game? If so, is that in English as well?

It's hard to talk to you when you speak from a position of ignorance. The korean and asian versions are in English. What the fuck? This information is available all over every gaming site with PS3 users on the net. How did you miss it?

I repeat, you're only hurting yourself.

The Asian and Korean versions have full English text and voice acting. There is nothing to translate.

Hey, could you stop jizzing all over the topic okay. And Zelda has never been about the story, so that means BG&E is doing something wrong?

Thats retarded.

I don't know if they will localize it. Anybody heard any different?

The game is honestly localized enough. English text and even competent voice work along with the online competent works fine and has plenty of people playing. This is not to mention trophy support.

I wouldn't wait especially after experiencing the game already.

I am not sure if I would list Demon's Souls as a Zelda clone though any more than SotC, which was clearly more of a Zeldaesque game than Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls is more Action-RPG heavy than Zelda.

Edit: Okami is the closest thing to Zelda I can think of off hand. Possibly Dark Cloud 2 as well maybe?

No need to be rude.

I don't look up every game that comes out, especially if there is no indication of it being released in NA.

You act like Demon's Souls has recieved any sort of publicity. I had never even heard of it until this thread, never lone heard that the Asian version had English support, and I consider myself to be a pretty rabid PS3 owner.

No, it just meant your comment about the story being better than Zelda was stupid. You set the bar so low that almost any game can be complimented. Has a better story than Zelda. Pffff. Ridge Racer has a better story than Zelda. See? Dumb.

Also, you obviously haven't played Demon's Souls.

Not rude, just statement of fact.

You mean the action-RPG portion is better than Zelda. I'd say it's very close in structure to Link to the Past, but done in a way that Nintendo would never ever have the balls to do it. The problem is, it's so much better than Zelda at being Zelda that it's hard to compare. I stopped comparing it to Zelda when I realized I was comparing Apples and Rotten Apples. But I don't really want to get into detail because it would result in spoilage.

Can someone describe the base gameplay and overall structure of Demon's Souls in a couple of sentences? Would be greatly appreciated. :)

Without spoilers: 5 worlds, each world with 3 areas except for one. Numbered by fans from 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, etc. Without getting into a discussion of getting better at it as a player, basically, you pick an area and finish it. Life and death plays a huge role in how the game is structured and played out. The entire game is played online like an MMO. It's Co-op without Co-op, and single player with co-op, and co-op all the time, and sometimes never any of those. There's no great way to say it. It's... an experience unlike any other found in gaming. A lot of the ideas in it are bleeding edge and totally obvious. As in, anyone who has ever played a From game should be surprised that it came from the house Armored Core built. All the worlds are connected by a hub called the Nexus. Pick where you want to go, in any order from there. You can not go to 1-2 until you beat 1-1. But you can go to 4-1 before you go to 2-1. Etc.

Also, it's an SCE property, part of the localization and QA as far as I can tell from digging around was actually done in America. If it's going to get announced for America, it would be at this E3. I wouldn't count on it.

Edit: Oh, and the voicework was done by frognation in the UK. It's fucking ace.

Thanks guys.

The title "Demon's Souls" is so generic that I must have subconsciously filed it under niche PC game and blocked it out. My bad. :lol

I'll have a read through of some of it now. Everything I've heard about it sounds amazing. :)

Same here. Never really looked into Demon's Souls before this topic...but now that I've seen some vids, I really want to play!

...man, between this and inFamous, I really have to get myself a PS3. E3 can't come soon enough!
