Betsy DeVos doesn't know the difference between growth and proficiency

nope, she is in, GOP majority

The irony here is that if it weren't for the Democrats shoehorning in a law that allows controversial nominees to be approved on 51 votes as opposed to the traditional 60 -- done just last congress and against the strong objections of Republicans -- she might have a chance of being shot down.

The partisanship backfires in both directions.

you mean republican obstructionism forced the dems to do something that further benefited republicans when they took power

both sides tho

I wouldn't say it "forced" them to do anything. It's only obstructionist when you're on the side that's getting blocked, otherwise you're doing what you're there to do. They were following the rules of congress using a political weapon that has equally served both sides at various times throughout history. Why is it only obstructionist when the side you disagree with uses it?

Are you going to argue that Republicans haven't been obstructionists these past few years, and that's it's merely a liberal viewpoint that makes them appear to be obstructionist?

The only egregious example (which, btw, i was strongly against) was Merrick Garland. Aside from that i think both sides do everything in their power within the law to block the things they disagree strongly with

So denying Obama the ability to have a fucking cabinet isn't blatant obstruction?

This is the same GOP that tried to shutdown the government just because they wanted to force Democrats to completely defund Obamacare.

This is the same GOP that actually tried to block investigations into Russia before the election.

This is the same GOP that a majority couldn't even vote to renew a law tackling domestic abuse (Beohner had to break the hastert rule to get it passed).

Utterly ridiculous and disingenuous.

The republican leadership actually stated that its main goal, ahead of and above taking care of the country, was to obstruct Obama. I mean I can't even understand how you could type that dude. Like, your slip is showing. I'm embarrassed for you. Which is good because it's not a function you yourself appear to possess.

But they changed the rule with only 52 votes, so what would have prevented the GoP from doing that themselves? Other than their staunch adherence to tradition?

I'm not so sure this woman is going to get appointed, lotta right wing educators I know hate this woman. From what I have seen in my 7 years in education is that great educators, regardless of party line put education first. Maybe not enough but still gives me a little bit of hope.

The GOP actually has shown a lot of respect for the filibuster. They already went to the brink on this issue during the GWB years when democrats were trying to filibuster all of Bush's judges (Obama even filibustered Alito later).

The GOP threatened to use this nuclear option that the Dems actually did use, but they backed down in 2005 and made a compromise instead. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gang_of_14

McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Susan Collins are still in the senate today. Even assuming no republican would step up to join them, the GOP would only have 49 to overturn the filibuster right now if the Dems hadn't done it for them already.

Dick DeVos got crushed by Jennifer Granholm (who I can't say I was a fan of either) back in 2006 when he ran against her for Governor, too bad that wasn't the last we got of the DeVos family...
Probably the worst pick of the litter in Trump's cabinet. Betsy De Vos and her millionaire ilk trying to profit off education and destroy teachers' unions are some of the most vile scum in politics.

This is a good article illustrating the kind of damage these people do: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/2016/12/08/when-public-goes-private-as-trump-wants-what-happens/

Billionaires in this case and yeah, it's about money and in DeVos's case a "a mission from gawd" for her. She and her friends will push the same shit they've done in Detroit throughout the country and that's kind of terrifying.

The slim hope I have is that Trump seems quick to get rid of people who make him look bad. After all, his signature phrase is "You're fired." When these picks invariably screw the pooch and he has to answer questions about their performance, I think he has no compunction about letting them go. He might not even allow them the dignity of resigning!

The problem being that quickly hiring and firing (due to incompetence) isn't how our government is designed to handle cabinet positions.

That woman is putrid stupidity incarnate.

Some choice quotes:

Kaine: I'm asking you a question. Should all schools that receive taxpayer funding be required to meet the requirements of individuals…
DeVos: I think that is a matter better left to the states.
Kaine: Some states might be good, other state might not be so good, and then people can move around the country?
DeVos: I think that is an issue best left to the states.

Doesn't answer the question and just repeats herself.

Murphy: Do you think guns have any place in or around schools?
DeVos: That is best left to locales and states to decide. If the underlying question…
Murphy: You can't say definitively today that guns shouldn't be in schools?
DeVos: I will refer back to Senator [Mike} Enzi and the school he was talking about in Wyoming. I think probably there, I would imagine that there is probably a gun in the schools to protect from potential grizzlies.

............................Grizzlies y'all

And all the other federal judges they didn't even bother considering.

Proficiency:
All 5th Graders have to meet a certain set of standards, and all 5th Graders are measured to their standards.

Growth:
Student comes into 5th Grade reading on a 1st Grade level and leaves reading on a 3rd Grade level, showing two years worth of growth in one year. This student would fail a 5th Grade proficiency test and be considered a failing student, disregarding the growth they made in the year.

Ok. Thanks for the context. Yeah someone who is going to lead this countries school systems should know this. Bananas.

Right wing educators don't have a voice in the Republican party. She's getting in.
