Beyond Good and Evil 2 is at "day zero" of development, might go early access

I'd rather kickstart a smaller, less ambitious sequel to Beyond Good and Evil with Jade and Pey'j than pay for early access to whatever it is they're doing (it doesn't seem like they know either)

I think people are underestimating how helpful it is to have a solidly working "engine" / technology base for their game ready, considering that can easily be 50% of dev time resources.

days gone uses an off the shelf engine and has been in development for about 3-4 years already. it isn't the engine that's the issue, its the level of ambition for what is a relatively small team and for a sequel to a franchise that is ultimately super niche.

i mean imagine if someone announced a new earthworm jim and their pitch was something as AAA and big budget and large scale as no mans sky meets anthem or something. there's no way that would be funded let alone finished, you'd see it a mile off. team too small, budget too big, franchise not worthy. now if they came with a 2D earthworm jim 3 in the same vein as the old games and was priced at $20 on PSN, you can see it being a possibility at least.

BG&E2 just needed to be more of the same really. that's all people really want.

I'm sorry but what we're those older CG teasers for then? To hype up the devs themselves? To convince Yves to fund development?

To think we now have 3 incredibly looking trailers for a game that seems to have little to no actual development done on it is not only absurd from a cost efficiency perspective but also a slap in the face of anyone that has kept up interest in this game thinking it was actually being worked on and might be nearing completion behind the scenes.

Sorry Michel Ancel, you seem like a sincere and genuinely cool and passionate guy but I won't get excited again before I see real gameplay (and not just concept videos, trailers or phone recorded press exclusive behind the scene looks).

Well...

The good thing is that this means they'll have plenty of time to listen to the feedback the trailer got.

The bad thing is that I now doubt this game will ever come out.

Looks interesting, but it's not the sequel I wanted to see. I don't need planet hopping for Beyond Good and Evil 2, I need a tight story, interesting world to explore with lots of secrets, and the charming visual style.

Fuck the people then.

I'm glad they're chasing something this ambitious.
Hopefully they manage to deliver, and i won't deny i'm skeptical they will, but i think this is a better use of their time than just doing that.

yeah, because getting no sequel is totally better than getting one. this ambition will be the death of this franchise.

I think game companies know they can rope a dope people. Gamer's are easy targets and the tendency to hive mind make for free advertising.

Examples in my opinion:

FF7 - Remake
BGE2
Metroid

They appealed to our nostalgia and wallets. This game is far out like 4-5 years out.

I hate when companies do this but you have no idea when Metroid is coming out. Could be next year for all you know. Nintendo doesn't usually show games more than a year out, even if they could.

Even if it is more than a year out though, don't you remember the Federation Force fiasco? Could you imagine the internet reaction when they announce a 2D 3DS Metroid II remake out in 3 months with nothing brewing for Switch? They would have been torn to shreds. They had to let people know that game was in development considering what they had to announce they are releasing in 3 months..

The other 2 though... not sure why they felt they had to.

They could have just made a low- to mid-budget true sequel in the vein of the old game with stylized graphics and a focus on a 10 hour long single-player experience and sell it for 30-40$. But yeah, everything from those companies has to be "ambitious" and "epic" nowadays ...

agreed. I also love the direction they promised with the trailer. This world was so much more than just Jade and Pey'j

but man this studio is the wrong place to be that ambitious, especially with a takeover looming. I wish it was much further in development. at this point it could be cancelled anytime.

Remember that thread a few days ago where people had no problem with games getting announced incredibly early in their development? How times change

Finish the fucking game before you try to sell it to me.

This is unacceptable coming from a major international publisher.

I've been fine without a sequel for 15 years, i'll survive.

I don't care about resolving the story as much as others, i guess.
Shenmue is probably my favorite game of all time after Silent Hill 2, and it ended on the worst cliff hanger possible (way less closure than BG&E) and even then i didn't care that much about seeing "the end of it", after so much time.
But this interplanetary exploration thing, instead, is a concept many are trying to tackle, and to have someone like Ancel behind it, is very exciting.
More than it would be to get a small game with competent gameplay and a charming, but just ok story.

Yeah, the Vivendi thing, is my biggest worry atm, actually.

That there is a tad bit beyond Day 0. :P

Day 0 for it's existence in the public eye maybe. Still fucking hyped as hell for this.

Speaking of fucking, what's with people taking suck great offence to the swearing? To me it seemed to fit perfectly, it wasn't some low brow attempt of edging it up, the characters who swear did it in a natural way to me. I can understand that it doesn't fit with the original BGE, but swearing isn't some sort of forbidden dark art, it's language. :P

Yeah those 2 seconds of gameplay they showed looked like some real early stuff. I was afraid of this. And of course they have to make it this super ambitious project that is supposed to be everything.

Man.. can't you just give us our tight puzzle/platforming/photography-adventure BG&E2?? Make it for the Switch or 3DS or whatever if it takes less resources and is cheaper to develop.. kickstart it for all I care, I'll fund it myself.

Oh well, time to forget this exists until it's much, much closer to release. As if that will happen.

you answered your own question

Yeah but at the same time, like many have already pointed out, BGE is 15 years old, the fans of it has grown. I was 12 years old when the first game came out and already had started to swear like a sailor by then.

If anything, I think the characters are way more lively and realistic for it. A world of pirates, poverty, oppression, high stakes adventures, giant ships crashing and nobody curses the day? Poor writing if anything at that point. :P

What was the tears about then? I got the idea that he became emotional for finally getting to unveil this dream game which he's worked on for so long. And it's all smoke and mirrors? They're at day 0? Emotional to reveal a target render CGI trailer? Just make a movie instead, that's my advice.

I'm not sure what to think of the Metroid Prime 4 announcement yet. It's great and all, but part of me thinks it's a panic move because of Federation Force bombing so badly and them going 'it's not dead guys, just stop throwing tomatoes at us.' The game could end up looking like Federation Force in HD...and that'd be a complete disaster. It's simply way too early.

This has almost become gaming's best troll, even better than that valve game everybody jokes about.

We were arguing over what console it was coming out on and if the switch could handle the graphics. Turns out there are no graphics and it was all a concept. That's hilarious

I honestly don't think Nintendo gives a hoot about gamers throwing tomatoes at them, they could pass them to Mario to cook pasta.

.

For what it's worth, very, very few games take off the shelf engines and then have to do little to no additional engine program. There's usually always extra features and bells and whistles that need to be added because the engine provides the foundation, but it usually won't provide the exact mechanics. (Unless you're like... making a bog standard third person shooter on Unreal Engine, then you might be good :P). Heck trying to make big, open worlds on UE takes quite a bit of manual engine labour.

Just make a movie and included a remake of the original game as a pack in for the 4k Blu-ray.

Which will become the standard by the time this releases.

I was sure there was no game, as it didn't exist either the last time they 'revealed' it.

Nice smoke, Ubisoft. A+ for Ancel tears on stage

The tears were Ancel and Guillemot thinking about Vivendi

Forgive me I didn't read most of the comments before me, but I'm actually really glad this is an early access thing because when you get down to it more feedback earlier is better. I gladly joined the monkey space program and signed up with my ps4. I think the bscklash against early access should really only be applied with its used for monetary gain ala the notch project that's basically just a unity demo. Early Access means Ancel and team can make better decissions about the direction they need to put their efforts i. Addition to letting consumers make informed decissions about the game at large and voice their opinions. Really hope monkey space turns out to be good. Ubi is doing the right thing it would have made the new A.C. Alot better if we had got say an estly access mission of a single level with new combat system instead of them building an entire sys with out any feedback. Anyways this is my most exciting project.

Michel Ancel could present me with a literal turd in a box and slap the words 'Beyond Good & Evil 2' on it and I'd still buy it.

That said, I hope this delivers on the conceptual vision they presented earlier this week.
