Beyond Good and Evil 2 is at "day zero" of development, might go early access

Yeah but at the same time, like many have already pointed out, BGE is 15 years old, the fans of it has grown. I was 12 years old when the first game came out and already had started to swear like a sailor by then.

If anything, I think the characters are way more lively and realistic for it. A world of pirates, poverty, oppression, high stakes adventures, giant ships crashing and nobody curses the day? Poor writing if anything at that point. :P

it isn't the language, it's the way it's used. "bang bang muthafucka" i mean, really. are we 12? you say we've grown up since the first one, but somehow the CGi trailer came off as way more immature

Does the monkey look like he circles around in high society and keeps his mouth to standards? :P

Call it childish or immature as you like, I think it gives him a carefree character which I enjoy.

And yet they are still promoting it as a sequel to an original xbox game. It honestly sounds so utterly removed from the original that the thought of adding the "2" at the end makes absolutelty no sense to me.

Also where the fuck is WILD? Was that just another pipe dream that never went anywhere?

Yeah it's early as fuck. Which Ancel said when he literally announced the beginning of pre-production on Instagram. Probably the only reason it showed up this year is because of how much he was talking it up on Instagram anyway.

This will either a) get canceled or b) not come anywhere near expectations.

Crazy to me that they'd release that trailer and get the hype machine going with... no actual game.

that's because they want gamers to help them make decision in their game, as the monkey operation program

I felt they decided to show it this year as it would be more difficult for Vivendi to cancel a title that had such a grand unveiling such as this.

Honestly, the original wasn't that great of a game to begin with. It's wasn't terrible by any stretch, but it wasn't earth shattering that would warrant this level of fervor over a sequel anyway

Fuck. Nothing I'm interested in is coming out soon.

Quote of the day right here:
“There’s still a lot of work to do,” Ancel says, “but we now really believe that we’re going to make this game.”

So, 2021 probably... one of the last games on current generation to be released.

I can't believe they announced it while they literally have done nothing real with the game :/

People have been building it up for 15 years or so in their minds. It was a fun little game with some unique things and a nice style.

lol this is ridiculous. They were probably giddy to show this seeing how long fans have been waiting, but maybe they should've waited a year. Now it's even more painful knowing this project exists, but that it's years out... in the best case scenario.

By that rationale, both Mario and Zelda should be swear fests no?

If Ancel wants to make a Fifth Element/Tank Girl/Gorillazs inspired edgy space faring game (ala NMS) then I don't see anything wrong with that, but trying to paint it a sequel to a kid friendly game like BG&E on the basis of 'human hybrids' & 'photography' as shared elements feels kind of weak.

So why exactly does everybody think vivendi is gonna cancel this?

I think its pretty obvious that bg&e2 is the most exciting thing coming from ubisoft right know.

If anything, they will turn it into destiny clone or something (which is probably worse, but yea)

Because it's ambitious as hell, which means it could be expensive; it's been in production for a long time and will continue to be in production for a long time, which means it could be expensive; it's clearly a prestige/pet project for Ancel, which means it could be expensive; and it's a prequel/sequel (the "2" still throws me off tbh) to a game that didn't actually perform that well sales-wise.

The main reasons Vivendi wouldn't kill it are a) they're not actually the evil empire we think they are, b) they think they can leverage the IP in other media, or c) Austin Walker's theory that this is really engine R&D is true. Also, it sounds like right now the burn rate on BG&E isn't actually that high, since apparently the core team is 15 people?

So why exactly does everybody think vivendi is gonna cancel this?

Early development, unproven IP (despite the love BG&E was a commercial flop) and probably too ambitious in scope. From a development perspective having spent out, it would make sense to build on Ubi's strong existing franchises in the short term to garner returns on the investment sooner rather than later.

Sure based on a CG trailer, BG&E2 might hit gold, but it could just as easily pancake, whereas AC, WD and others are more stable franchises with strong existing audiences.

For what it's worth: People have seen gameplay behind closed doors. Yes it's early but it's not so early that development has literally just begun. I know panic and anger are easier but assuming the worst of everything is unhealthy.

a quickly cobbled together demo which they were constantly saying was all placeholder assets. this thing hasn't started development. hell, i'd be surprised if it's even finished it's pre-production. it doesn't seem to have any real focus beyond an overarching "vision".

Arent ubisofts biggest ips shrinking though? (Farcry and asscreed)

Bg&e2 seems like a pretty good bet to me

shrinking as in what way...dropping from 16 million to 15? lol. it's like call of duty, yes it's on a decline, but it's still outselling practically everything every single year. now compare that to BG&E...and you're confused as to why vivendi might chose AC and watchdogs over this?

I mean the only thought I have for it eventually coming out in one piece is that open-world games are Ubisofts Bread and Butter - see AC/FC/WD/The Crew/Steep - and Assassins and Watch Dogs in particular are a template for third person action games with platforming/shooting/driving and contextual interactions

I can imagine a game of this type could be scaled to fit one of those frameworks, while still having an identity in the flavour of its mechanics and the unique opportunities of its aesthetics (level/character design)

Trainwreck, vaporware, etc...
I'll be interested only when they have something slightly concrete to show or else it's going to end with disappointment.

At this point, they're far beyond pre-pro, which was likely when they were figuring out the scale and how to make the systems required for the scale they want to work. They've got the systems figured out which I imagine was the most difficult part.

Also. This thing has a lot more focus than the No Man's Sky comparisons people are trying to make. That tweet tells us it's only a single solar system for one, so the scale is much smaller. Ancel knows what the story is, and it's something that sounds very doable as a "game" : you start out as a nobody, you grow to becoming a space pirate. That's a very clear narrative arc.

I'm way more worried about Vivendi taking over next year and canceling the fucking thing than it coming out later than 2020.

Ubisoft is big enoigh that they can bank on ac andstill invest in bg&e.

But if vivendi is as bad as people say, they can also milk ubi ips to death and sell their shares i guess

So this is basically like the other cg trailer back then?

Day 0 development?

And early access?

Ubisoft, why are you so incompetent?

Wow, this went from super hype to zero for me in two days.

Ancel can obviously do whatever he wants, but the project doesn't seem to retain any of the elements that made the first game memorable, outside of the setting.

The feedback from fans at this ridiculously early stage seems to me, a huge red flag. I'm a fan of tightly executed visions from a single creator, with opportunities for tweaking once it's complete, but this seems like it's a sprawling mess that's yet to form. Shocking after all this time.

Well this is the vision.

Yeah this ain't getting made. Not a real loss considering it wasn't the sequel fans wanted in the first place. All that on stage fervor over a game that is nothing more than a concept at this point.

This news is kinda breaking my heart. Every so often a game will come along and really take me by storm, and it looks like a lot of others feel the same. So to hear this'll never release or come out in 3 or 4 years really really bums me out!

How the hell could Ubisoft have pushed out this incredible trailer, knowing the demand and love for the original, and have only just started on this? I just can't fathom. Any hype for this game is pretty much killed with this update. Fuck. :(

I do think it is odd that this is all they have to show for it, been ages since I played BG&E but I recall loving it.

In for everything, Michel Ancel is one of the few industry people I would follow into a early access project.

After revealing that great trailer + zero gameplay = Nope.

I was bewildered that the OT for the reveal was so positive. This will come out in 2022. Maybe. Or cancelled again

Ancel's tears were pre-emptive.

The most guttng thing is that i was so carried away, not knowing what it was but totally fell for the trailer that towards the end, i saw people on gaf here saying what it was called, immediatley did what everyone does thats a noob, went onto the wiki page before i knew it the trailer was over and i was reading what the first beyond game was about, and youtubing it.

I thought i saw Summer 2018, but i was confusing it with another game trailer, cos i was engrossed online at the same time daaaaaaamn.

I always get soaked into these type trailers and hype for games usually the games are a long way off

Cyberpunk 2077 original trailer comes to mind.

I suppose i still need to play the first game but this trailer and the whole suggest game idea concept that talked about, makes me what this game, and want it now, and yet now i hear that it may be years and years out

*Sighs*
