Beyond: Two Souls gameplay, screens and previews

I have to ask, would people be satisfied if this was the kind of fidelity (detail) we got in next gen non linear WRPGs like say Fallout?

What is that guy from Sleeping Dogs doing in the background?

I think people are way too easily impressed by bullshots..
Everything screams PS3 in those screens except for the fake iq.

Story and voicework are important to me.

Heavy Rain got both of those very, very wrong. The gameplay we know what to expect it's a adventure game with point and click elements. I like those.

My only fear is once E3 arrives games like these are not going to look as impressive and for many the graphics are what makes them want this game.

The voicework seemed ok in the videos in the OP except for the black scientist guy. He couldn't stop sounding like a pedophile when talking to the little girl :lol

Sure, but the main visual issue those open world games have to deal with is animation. No matter how pretty modded Skyrim can look (or hell, even The Witcher 2), once things start moving it all kind of crumbles.

Kadeem Hardison is in this game!? Day motherfuckin 1. This game looks pretty damn good. Coming from GOW:A I didn't think it would get better. Wow

At least this looks more like a big budget point and click adventure game than a giant mess of button prompts that appear on the screen like Heavy Rain was.

I'm interested in it but I'll have to wait and see about some more stuff before I can say I will buy it.

If you didn't like Heavy Rain, you're probably not going to like Beyond. One will need to dispel expectations of conventional gaming paradigms in order to enjoy it and accept that David Cage likes to make interactive movies.

Of course, this kind of entertainment design rests firmly on the quality of story, script and acting. If it could pull in talent like Ellen Page, it should turn out quite well.

I wonder if we (as the ghost) can just quitely go back to Jodie after we correctly pick the first card and not be an ass to the other woman. if you read the cvg article, that scenario escalate to really crazy situation.
we can choke the woman in the end

Like Heavy Rain I think people's play through will be very different from each other, but give the illusion of being scripted at the same time. Was one of the things I found most fascinating about Heavy Rain was that in the focus testing they did for the game the common complaint they had from people was that they didn't have control over how situations played out, but once they started talking to each other they realized everyone of them had a different outcome. People that had a character die actually thought that was what was supposed to happen, until they found out later the character could have survive. I expect even more of that in this game given it seems more freedom is being given to the player in how they handle every scenario.

Yeah that is so awesome. I've played through with 2 different friends and they all had different outcomes from mine.

It's really hard to believe this is on the PS3. Looks fantastic.

Sony First Parties sure are amazing in the Graphics department

It's pretty stupid that there are some people (not just in this thread, but the other cage ones) who can't accept for some reason that this is a genre. It doesn't need to be anything else. Interactive story games have been around forever. It's like going into a mario thread and complaining there is no rocket launchers or 64 player multiplayer on a bigger map or something.

This genre exists. This is a game in the genre. G-g-g-g-g-g-g-get over it.

Something I don't get...

Why is it that The Walking Dead was cheered as a breath of fresh air in the gaming industry and lauded when it won GOTY awards, but yet we can't have a QD thread without folks parroting the same old tired criticisms that have already been repeated over and over again ad infinitum. TWD and HR are essentially the same genre with the same type of gameplay, and I'd argue that QD does it a lot better.

but the game structure seems very different than heavy rain, in vg24/7 article, it mention that the story are not told in linear fashion
The plot is “told in chronological disorder,” with the player being fed information out of logical sequence. You have to “rebuild the story” to find out what happens, and you sometimes see effects before causes.

that will make it very limiting to branching storyline approach of Heavy Rain.

Dwayne Wayne!!!

Glad I wasn't the only one to recognize his voice. I hope they give him and any other notable cast more shine closer to release.

I had to stop the video about 75% through because I was getting spoiler vibes but I'm stoked. I loved Heavy Rain and this game looks like it'll surpass it. The Ghost Guide aspect seems pretty awesome as well. Super hyped!

Not really. Sure the settings themselves and aspects of the story will have to be a certain way but the decisions that are made in "future" sections can still inform what's available in "past" sections. For example, if you're faced with a choice between saving/supporting a character or continuing on leaving them in a "future" scene, when in a "past" scene you could have less options for interaction with that character.. forming less of a bond and thus supporting your decision to leave them.

"Gamey"? What would you like to see? That's what I'm wondering. What would make this more "gamey"?

People still love graphic adventures, for instance, and those are just as limited (if not more so) than this. Although you have to figure out where items go you are ultimately just clicking on things and listening to dialog.

The Walking Dead received plenty of praise last year and basically used this formula. What about Dreamfall? Same kind of thing.

I don't see the problem here. It's a modern take on the graphic adventure type of experience. These story based adventure experiences aren't designed to be "gamey" like a character action game.

At least this game has the chance to do something interesting with puzzle solving thanks to the ghost feature. You actually get a free camera, it appears, and the ability to look and move around while interacting with a number of objects. Figuring out how to help your character get through the environments by using the ghost is an interesting idea. Throw in possession and you have an even more interesting idea. For a graphic adventure, it seems rather robust.

Like the combat actually requires button inputs like in a fighting game, requiring quick reactions. You can move around the other person and fight instead of being fixed and performing pseudo QTEs. I'll try to keep an open mind, I really enjoyed HR, but there were some sections where it could have benefitted from giving more control.

I agree.
Such a breath of fresh air next to Dudebro #72. Even with its faults, I'm glad Heavy Rain even exists (especially with the budget it got) this generation. I'm really looking forward to BEYOND and whatever QD is doing for PS4.

the more level headed people will point that HR have higher production value and maybe immersion too, but Walking Dead may have the better story.

some people value story more in this type of game and HR do have some flaws in the story, plothole, uneven voice acting etc.

because it is not an action game, just like journey have no combat, puzzles, or even challenging platforming, but stripping it from all of that let it to deliver a unique experience without letting you getting distracted by all the 'gamey' stuff

in Beyond, it focus on giving you cinematic emotional experience and they may decide that a 3d action fighting mechanic may not be suitable to what they want to achieve.

I didn't recognize him by his voice, I did it by his face..lol.

Breath of fresh air? TWD was praised because it actually had a good story with good writing. If it didn't it would have been picked apart just like Heavy Rain was.

When you go this route in game making you have to make damn sure you nail the movie parts because you're not going to have much of an actual game there to fall back on. Cage can't stop writing horrible stories.

He was on the Comic Con panel with Ellen, so i'm guessing that he has a pretty important role in the game.

Nice! I was completely unaware there was even a comic con panel for Beyond. I'll have to look up a video later.

Meh.. I didn't feel like the story in Heavy Rain was any worse than most other games and the voice acting really wasn't that bad. But I guess when you have less interactivity in the genre people will harp on other aspects more than usual. In any case a lot of PnC Adventure games seem to have subpar VA so fans of the genre should be more than satisfied.

Seriously, what in those screens or videos seems impossible to pull off on PS360?

It was just my first reaction when seeing this screens. Its gorgeous, I realize it isn't a technical marvel.

Ive been asking this for nearly a year. The David Cage syndrome

personally I like HR more, not for the overall plot though, but for the individual scene and the way David Cage 'direct' it is very masterful. it really give me emotions that are unlike what I experience in games before

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm not a fan of QTE or waggle or any gimmicky shit like that. I hate it in all my games.

What I find funny is how some people will criticize games like RE6 or DS3 for having excessive QTE or hold-analog-forward-while-crazy-shit-happens sequences (and say how it ruins them) and then turn around and praise TWD or some other game, like this, that is 100% the stuff they complained about in OT's of other games.

Oh but the story! Give me a break.

It's a double standard. At least I'm consistent in my QTE and waggle criticism.

See that is where I disagree. If the game is going to have action sequences then it should have the mechanics to match. I don't mind the comparisons to point and clicks of old, but the scene I just watched was a martial arts bout, not find the key under the pot plant.

you're not GRASPING what I am saying. This is a genre. This genre fucking exists. This is a game in that genre. You're comparing excessive QTE in a third person shooter or action adventure title. This is not that. This is an interactive story.

You don't like this genre, clearly. But complaining that it should be something else makes....no sense.

it's not double standard, it's basically games in different genre. I would not be happy if Heavy Rain had a third person shooter segment

Am I the only one not particularly impressed by those screenshots? The character models are great, the rest not that much. And what the hell is going on with the snow?

Edit: The post above mine answers my opening question.

Looks amazing!

I can't wait to play this video game, and experience the gameplay.
if they nail the realistic intuitiveness with control and the environment... that's pretty much my dream come true..
