Bi-lingual gaf: Which games have the best non-native dubs?

The German dub of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are probably the best German video game dubs in existence, thanks to then using like 99% of the original voice actors for all the Disney characters and very well known anime voice actors for all the Final Fantasy and original KH characters.

Right after that comes Zelda BotW's German dub. Every character's, well, character is perfectly portrayed by their VA. All around very well known VAs except for one person who seems to be a newcomer. Highest quality dub Nintendo has done for now.

Also I have a soft spot for the German dubs of the old Lucas Arts adventure games. They are actually really bad, but that mattress then so good.
By the time Sam & Max came out their quality rose and probably saw their peak with Grim Fandango and Money Island 3.

Also I have to hand it to Ubisoft for actually creating some really good German dubs for their games because they tend to use the creme de la creme of German VAs in their games.

I played through BotW in Latin American Spanish specifically because of Zelda's bad English VA. Kudos to Mexican Zelda's voice actress (Jessica Ángeles), she did a great job imo. Some other voices are not so good, such as Revali's. But overall, I enjoyed the VA.

A little off topic here.
I have to criticize Sony on how they handle multilingual version of game, it's so bad and anti consumer.
There are separate version of same game, English, Japanese, Chinese, force you to double/triple dip. Separate version of DLC and Save file too.
Everyone else let you buy once and change language according to your system language, even Nintendo do that.

I think the English dub for FFXV is superior, mostly because it doesn't have Japanese Prompto.

Games like Kingdom Hearts also really benefit from their English dubs - I just can't process Japanese Disney characters (not to mention the random celebrity VAs the series has used have knocked it out of the park - Christopher Lee, Leonard Nimoy, Billy Zane).

Umm... I thought the Serbian in GTAIV was surprisingly well done too. That's probably the only time I've ever even heard my native language used in a game.

I've gone through so many bad dubs during my childhood and teen years that when I finally got comfortable with my English I stopped playing with native dubs, even though I'm finally fluent enough to even understand when a dub is bad in English the amount of bad dubs is insignificant compared to bad dubs in my language (Latin America Spanish, to be more specific Argentinian Spanish, where Spanish is pretty different even when compared with the rest of Latin America, not to mention that sometimes you only had European Spanish as the only Spanish option and that suuuuuuuuuuuuuucked)

The recent NieR: Automata is the only game I can think of where I had a choice between English voices and Japanese voices, and went for the English voices. I got tired of the Japanese voices almost right away.

About to start FFXV in French so lets see how it goes

Before I started playing FFXV I told myself I'd just switch between English, French, and Japanese voices depending on my mood, but I ended up liking the English track enough that I never felt the need to switch. I think I might try out the French track if I do another playthrough.

Uncharted in Portuguese (the OG, European kind :P) absolutely nailed it!

Horizon Zero Dawn also did a great work, though mostly with Aloy's voice and another mid-late main character (generic NPC's are very much hit and miss).

Sly Cooper was also very well done too.

Hmmm. Those are all the ones I can think off from the top of my mind. I supposed the many PES and Fifa games also do a decent job.

The only Chinese dubbed games that are acceptable are Blizzard ones. Half Life 2 is OK but feels rough now. Rise of the Tomb Raider gets a lot of praise but I think it is kinda bad.

I enjoy Polish dub for Overwatch. There are lots of one-liners that make me smile. Both, the translation and the delivery is pretty good.

Apart from this - I believe that Uncharted 2-3-4 are very well done in Polish.

Blizzard is doing amazing job with their Russian dubs.
Warcraft 3, WoW, Overwatch, Hearthstone - they are all great.

Sony's Swedish dubs (which they do for children/family games like LBP, R&C, etc) have been pretty good I think. For the few seconds I've heard them. Because F that noise, give me the original English VA please.

The European Spanish dub of Zelda is PERFECT, 10/10, the voices range from good (Urbosa) to absolutely incredible (Great Deku Tree,
the King
)

Some examples (heavy spoilers, only watch if you have all the memories)
https://youtu.be/yTaIZvqzUkI?t=17m6s - Zelda,
King
https://youtu.be/yTaIZvqzUkI?t=29m46s - Great Deku Tree

Again, don't mix it with the Latin American dub. (Not because it's bad or anything, I can't comment on that, it's just so that people don't check out the wrong dub if they are curious)

Another edit because I found the
King
's firs appearance, which is a great example of the dub.

It's pretty good, but personally I don't like the Zelda dub very much. I can't tell exactly why but it seems a bit out of place. Drama scenes are not bad, but daily scenes like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTaIZvqzUkI&feature=youtu.be&t=20m35s feels too exaggerated at her intonation for me

- Metro 2033 in Russian. That was intense. Again, I can't judge the quality of the actors, but it sure felt right playing it like that.

Funny you'd mentioned Metro. The Russian audio track is actually the original (native) language for the game; it's the version released in English that's dubbed over. According to a buddy of mine (a native speaker), the English dub is fairly on-par.

Agree. I usually play on English but my GF wanted to tag along for this so I set the console in spanish and was very pleasantly surprised at how good the dub is.

The Metro series is pretty sweet! A couple of games that I prefer the native Russian w/ English subs, but the English dubbing is also great.

I don't think I've heard any good Arabic dubs yet. Even Uncharted 4 which had a freaking Arabic box art and subtitle :\
On the other hand I'm glad they exist. A decade ago the idea of Arabic subtitles or menus was laughable, and until today the are still not guaranteed or expected.

that is actually the native language, English is non-native. TW3 was written in Polish and then translated in English during development
It wasn't dubbed, but according to everyone who played it in Arabic it was the best Arabic localization ever. People who aren't familiar with the series nor RPGs got it and loved it because of the Arabic writing.

I always wonder when non-Japanese speaking people prefer Japanese dubs if those dubs are actually good or not
The less you know a language the less you can recognize how bad it sounds. The first time I saw a white woman talk perfectly like an anime character I realized how unnatural anime sounds.

Yes I know. I didn't hear any English of Witcher 3, but not only script in Polish is good but also voice acting, which I bet is better then English. CDP Red payed a lot of attention to its native language.

I always play games in Swedish if possible. Too bad Ubisoft removed Swedish text some time ago...

Kingdom Hearts games used to have pretty good german dubs. Too bad they stopped making them from Birth By Sleep on.

I don't think I will ever say that a non-native dub is better than the native one, but there are some great European Spanish dubs.

Max Payne 1 comes to mind for example.

Microsoft has always had great european spanish dubs as well, but only until recently, now they have told us to fuck off and do not dub anything.

Recore, Forza Horizon 3, Quantum Break werent dubbed and they almost leave Gears 4 undubbed.

EDIT: And Ramon Langa (eur spanish VA of Bruce Willis) always does a magnificent job, he dubbed Soldier:76 in Overwatch

Sony's Finnish dubs have been pretty great. My favourite has to be Puppeteer. The voice acting was truly amazing.

Tales of the Abyss had a surprisingly good dub, especially for the time. English Luke and Japanese Luke are almost perfectly analogous with each other. Same can be said for most of the cast sans Tear, who is still good in English (just too old-sounding).

Blizzard do a great job with their french VA.
And yes, BoTW in french is better for me.
Fun fact : The french voice actress of Zelda in BoTW is the same as Mei in Overwatch
