I was a physics major before it was cool.

Anything that encourages an interest in physics is great in my opinion.

I'm sure most of these students won't end up following through with physics, but some of them inevitably will.

Still disturbs me how the kid from Roseanne looks exactly the same as he did 20 years ago on Roseanne.

Also the fact that Sheldon guy is actually 39 years old.

How this show and Two and a Half Men are popular, I'll never understand.

you couldn't make me watch those shows...

I rather cut myself.

the only show that was remotely funny to me like LULZ funny was "the boondocks".

other then that I'm pokerface as everyone else watches these shows.

enjoy sucking dick on the L train to pay back those loans.[/QUOTE]
Maybe it's different there but how is this more debt than a typical degree? Here, in grad school they basically pay you, so it's just the debt of undergrad, which I would think would be similar for many different degrees.

I wonder how likely it is the actual Big Bang Theory will be scrapped before the show's run ends.. I'm pulling for white holes and parallel universes.

The ages of those two guys has blown my mind. Almost as shocking as the guy that played Hannah Montana's brother being in his mid 30s.

You sound like a fun person who people love hanging out with.

This show used to be all right when it actually had tons of geek references, like their Halo nights and stuff like that. Can't remember the last time they had one of those. Now it's just nerd bashing, which would be cool with me if it was actually funny.

My wife is in chemistry and polymers and only had to pay for undergrad. She was paid while she went for her masters, and is paid for being in her PhD program. The debt she accrued is so minimal.

I've seen one or two clips of it and I'm pretty sure that the show is intended to be absolute crap. I mean, no-one can possibly think that it's funny.

I find it tends to be people over 40 that love that show. Stoners to boot.

meh hate the game not the player : /

I've never even heard anyone laugh at this show irl...

yet countless people watch it.

puzzling

idk "stop hating what I like" or vice versa "stop liking what I hate" is what it all boils down to

there just summed up the entire internet.

Watched a few episodes of it. Didn't like it at all =\

Anyways, TV shows usually inspire people to do new things good and bad. I know the Meth bust rate went up once Breaking Bad came on in the middle states.

I don't get the Big Bang Theory hate.

It's a dumb sitcom. It's a parody of nerd/geek stuff. It's not hysterical, but I'll watch it with my parents when I'm home.

I mean, christ. Are people really complaining about unrealistic characters in a sitcom?

At a glance, only two or three people of all those who posted here seem to like this extremely popular show. We're on a counter-culture forum alright (for the record, I like BBT).

It is obvious that most of those people will drop out, but then, that happens with anything, don't act like these people are just shallow and there's no benefit to this story. Most people drop out even when they've got "serious" motives to learn something.

I started Japanese with mangas and anime, as most people do here in France. True, there's a huge percentage of people who drop out because Japanese is actually hard to learn. But then you've got people like me who aced their degrees in the end because 10 years ago I was able to watch my first fansubbed anime on the internet.

Get over it. People started to learn German because of Tokio Hotel (even though the French tend to dislike the language) and Japanese because of Naruto, and they'll learn physics because of Big Bang Theory. Think of it like love relationships: most of the time you first want to get with someone because of looks, and then you stay for the rest or leave. There's only so many people you're compatible with, and so you'll probably break up at some point. Same for knowledge and culture.

If a show can encourage people to get into a particular field, I say good thing. Don't forget that we "youngsters" (not that young myself, but still in my twenties) often hesitate when it comes to what we want to do with our lives. We're growing up in a generation where most of us get to choose what they want to do, and at the same time we know these are unstable times. Anything that can get our motor running is good. And even if those BBT fans drop out, they'll at least know that physics is not for them, which, frankly, is always better than just not knowing what they want to do.

No, it's actually worse than that. They're complaining about people getting access to culture and knowledge through means they deem unworthy.

People really base life decisions in what they see in the media? This shit actually happens?

I had a girlfriend that was determined to become a lawyer because her favorite movie was Legally Blonde. It turned out she was too blonde for that line of work.
