They would not make a big deal about PS2 BC. Because it would just be, "Hey. Now we have the same features we did a year ago."

Due to timing, it's most likely a price cut. They would also not behave like this if it were a big game. Just look at how they've announced previous big-name games. Like of God of War III recently.

Last day of the current fiscal year.
It's something they couldn't announce just a few days earlier at a big event (GDC09) (which would be weird if it was a software/firmware announcement).

There's little doubt it's a price drop, unless it's not specifically PS3 related like smarthouse claims. Maybe it's just the PS2 price cut? Or both?

Sony Computer Entertainment is set to make a global announcement this week regarding the PS3 which has witnessed three months of declining sales with Tuesday, March 31 which is Wednesday in Australia set to be the big day.

The Australian source article says big announcement coming Wednesday April 1, 2009 in Australia... This sounds promising.
