Biggest bummers in gaming history.

Brutal Legend.

Not only did it fail to properly deliver on a great premise, it sunk Double Fine as a retail developer and doomed them to making downloadable titles.
 
-Capcom's almost satirical incompetence these past years.
-The prostitution of Rare's corpse.
-Wonderful 101's horrible sales.
-The corruption of DLC's ideals from expanding content post-release to ransoming it pre-release.
 
The death of JRPGs and the rise of moe otaku nonsense, including its proliferation in the west.
 
The shittiest thing about video games? Growing up.

I can appreciate games on a deeper level than I used to, it's just a shame I don't have nearly as much time anymore.

Nintendo dedicating one entire hour to some lame-ass SRPG bullshit for 3DS this past e3. Fuck that garbage, I want enhanced remakes of games I already played.
 
#1: Hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere yet, but EA's monopolization of the football genre. As a fan of the 2K (and later ESPN) football series, imagine where first-person-perspective football could have been at this point, now that the Oculus and Project Morpheus are both gaining popularity.

Games did dip in price at the start of the CD-ROM console era, but as MCN said, there's been about eighteen+ years of inflation since then.

When I was moving last week, I found a journal I wrote in back in 1996. I had received some money for my birthday and I wanted to buy a copy of Super Mario RPG. I called several stores (including Wal-Mart and Target) and just about every store charged a different price between $65 and $80. Finally, I found an independent used game store about an hour away from my house that was charging $55 for a used copy, which I ended up buying.

Bad ports - any game, any platform. No excuse. Off the top of my head - Dark Souls. You shouldn't need a modder to fix the game.
Bioware since Baldur's Gate II - I've noticed some people saying "but DA, ME", I didn't care for DA, and ME 1 + 2 were ok, but not enough to make me want to play 3
Anytime a game doesn't have a good single player. That's just me - I don't want to play or care about multiplayer.
Rise of Always Online and other DRM
Uplay - such a waste to have on top of Steam.
Whenever a game doesn't come to GOG for no reason. For example, why isn't any Bethesda games on GOG? They pulled the Fallout games with seemingly no intention of returning them. FFS you can download a drm-free copy of The Elder Scrolls Arena and The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall (DOS games) for free from Bethesda's own website! I don't even think the other games even use DRM other than Steam...

I suppose, but there are a lot of triple-A games that I wish I could play split-screen. I thought it was coming back in 2011, with big titles like Uncharted 3 or Killzone 3 or F.E.A.R. 3 or Portal 3 2 supporting split-screen when the previous titles hadn't, and games like Resistance 3 and Gears of War 3 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 bringing it back around.

Now it seems to be going away again like never before. Call of Duty Ghosts dropped the split-screen count down to 2, even on next-gen platforms. Killzone is back to being single player only (and bad). The Last of Us had no split-screen, and I doubt Uncharted 4 will either. Bungie isn't supporting splitscreen with Destiny, despite Halo thriving on it before and during the introduction of Xbox Live multiplayer. The Order 1886 is based around a squad of 4 fighters, yet there is no multiplayer aspect to it at all. DriveClub is too pretty to have split-screen. Sunset Overdrive will have some kind of multiplayer co-op, but no word on local split-screen within or outside of Online. Assassin's Creed V is going to have a big co-op focus, but there's not a chance in hell it will have local play.

Thanks Nintendo for keeping the dream alive, I guess. I still don't want a Wii U though.

Anyway, I've got to go dig a ditch to bury local multiplayer in.

God, this is a real bummer. Twisted Metal 2012 was a genuinely fantastic game and absolutely deserves multiple sequels helmed by David Jaffe. The gaming world was far to stupid to pick up on the design brilliance of this game, however (waa! Cars don't die quick enough! I want instant gratification, I don't want to work for it!!!) and we will most likely never see another one, which really, really sucks.
 
Mass Effect 3's original ending hurt. A lot.

To be honest the Extended Cut hurt more.

With the original ending I was pissed off, but at least there was still a chance that they could unveil some indoctrination type scheme and reveal that the real ending would be coming in some free package because of development delays or something, the speculation and exchange of an theories on the forums was awesome.

With the Extended Cut and the reaction they gave to the fans they truly showed that they didn't get it and didn't give a shit. A slideshow to finish off a series I spent hundreds of hours/$$$ on? No recognition that the starchild and the R/G/B endings were a direct lie ("we're not doing an A/B/C type ending" a month before release), terribly written and full of plotholes?

Not to mention all the lies about the reaction of the fans ("they have a hard time letting go" instead of the actual complaints, which mainly where "it is filled with plotholes, leaves out harbinger, makes all decisions meaningless, no end boss, cliffhanger ending for your crew with no closure"), direct attacks towards their own fanbase (people are "entitled" for disliking the ending and wanting a better one after spending at least $180 and hundreds of hours, fans are attacking "artistic integrity" even though we know the ending was written by two people without reviews from the other writers and in complete contrast to the vision of the original writer).

Really the way they handled the reaction to the ending made the ending worse, because it showed that they were completely unable to give a direct, human response to the complaints. They completely ignored the forums and the letters they got from fans, and the reaction video's like Angry Joe's and instead all we got were like two PR-filtered statements. It showed how terribly incompetent they are now at maintaining a relationship with their fans and reacting in a proper way when a majority says "this is awful".

I hate the way the ending debacle was portrayed on all the major gaming websites and especially how it is remembered. Almost every article made it seem like the fans were nothing more but loud, arrogant, entitled, mean, threatening assholes that were out of control and being ridiculous, which is simply not true.

I was in the midst of that forum when this whole thing went down, and it was far from it. The Bioware forums were filled with at least tens of thousands of huge fans that spent hundreds of hours on the games. Those guys were immensely passionate. They tried everything to make valid complaints about the ending, valid complaints about the interviews they gave a month before release, valid complaints about day-1 Javik dlc and valid complaints about the response from Bioware to said complaints ("oh you just can't let go). Heck they even donated to charity and send Bioware cupcakes and letters to let them know why they were so unhappy, but still they were portrayed as an ungrateful and selfish minority.

After everything that happened I'm convinced that EA has already has permanently damaged what Bioware used to be so great at, which is communicating with their fans. At this point I'm pretty sure EA is just waiting for them to fail again so they can line the company up like it did to all the others it has acquired over the years.

The demise of Sega, eventually leaving the console business. They won me back with the Dreamcast and the day I heard the news I was super bummed. A part of console arcade gaming died that day. Since, their software output hasn't been the same.

The demise of Squaresoft. For me their pinnacle was the 16-bit generation. Since that time it has been a steady decline of quality and quantity. It's downright depressing.

For me, and i know i'm pretty much alone, ND moving from whimsical platforming to gritty semi-realistic shooters.

You're not alone.
 
That Sega didnt help Nintendo with the WII U by giving all their powerful Sega love with creating titles like Skies of arcadia 2, Shenmue 3, Dragon Force 3, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Billy hatcher 2, you get the point.

Yep thats mine for sure. It's a shame how far jrpgs have fallen that the fandom now loves stuff that wouldn't have gotten any attention during the SNES-PS2 days. Back when we had jrpgs that were interesting in the mythos and themes they tackled. Maybe they were a bit "my first psychology" storytelling, but they sure at least tried stuff and weren't relying on cute girls to sell themselves. I'm surprised the fandom seems to eat them up. I guess that means I've moved past the jrpg fandom.
 
Adding on to the pain of the OP:
  1. No Shenmue 3.
  2. No sequel to Jet Set Radio Future. Death of arcades in the UK, namely Namco Wonderpark.
  3. No Virtua Cop 3 home release along with the lack of light gun shooters.
  4. New Sega not giving us what we want.
  5. No sequel to F-Zero GX.
  6. Battlefield 4 issues - I really want to buy that game but I refuse to until it is, at least, playable to BF3 level even though that game has issues.
  7. Platinum Games' hard times and struggles for super success due to bad developer deals and the major gaming audience.
  8. Companies like this that perfectly summed up the major gaming audience of today, which are not gamers but rather interactive movie gamers. Do I condone this company? No way. Halo 4. I knew deep down it wouldn't be what I wanted before launch but I bought the $100 CE anyway. Totally soured me on future games.
 
Advent Rising. Story and setting were so promising, and they were advertising different variations in the story based on player choices. But when the game came out, it turned out to be an absolute stinker.
 
lazy answer. mass effect 2 is the best game they have made and 3 was close to as good

As a huge fan of the first one, it being in my top 5 of all time, the second one was a huge bummer. The story in the first game was incredible, perfectly set up with a main villain to focus on, three acts through which you collect party members during missions and come together to bring down Saren.

The second one was as different as you could get from the first one while still being a Third Person Shooter RPG and in the Mass Effect Universe. The plot was no longer about an overarching villain, it was about the collectors who turned out to be on of the shittiest twists in the series. The whole game was a party creating fetch quest with no real plot advancement and the final suicide mission was plain boring, also Baby Terminator WTF? They got rid of almost all of the great things about the first in an RPG sense, and stripped so much out. The missions were all linear and the choices made affected almost nothing.

They actually completely changed the writing staff from the first to the second, Drew Karpyshyn who was the lead writer for the first game was shipped off to The Old Republic to toil away on that talent sink while Hudson (the Producer) and Mac "The Hack" Walters took over lead writing and it is incredibly obvious this happened. The plot was poorly tied together and never seemed to make much sense, just look at what happened in Mass Effect three.

I will grant that the gameplay was better but they changed too much that didn't need to be.
 
EA shutting down Pandemic Studios. They were my favourite developer near the end of the PS2 era with Mercenaries, Battlefront and Destroy All Humans! all being made by them. They may not have made perfect games, but they sure gave them character and made them memorable.
 
Lightning Returns... and I really liked her... sadly her games are shit.

Gothic III... fucking bugs. ~5 years later it's nearly playable, thank you Community.

Diablo III... who ever decided to throw randomly generated maps over board : F@CK YOU.

The death of THQ... luckily Saints Row 4 kicked GTAs ass regardless :D

Monster Hunter becoming a handheld franchise. Seriously, a game about fighting massive monsters but doing so on a 5 inch screen. Brilliance.

The FPS genre taking over the industry for this long of a stretch. Thought the fad would of died out by now. I think I am out and then they pull me back in with games like Destiny.

Earthbound 64 going to GBA instead of Nintendo 64. I would have LOVED to see an N64 game of Earthbound and what I saw of the initial video looked just as fun as the GBA version.

It's pretty depressing to think about, yeah. Twisted Metal 2012 was excellent when it worked, easily the best multiplayer game on PS3 and it had a high skill ceiling.

There was supposed to be another car combat game being kickstarted and Jaffe was involved but it failed and never returned. One of my favorite genres is likely dead for good.

death of arcades? Who actually likes going to arcades to play games? Arcades are just dumb in an age when you can have the game on consoles in the comfort of your own home. Once the Sega Saturn rolled along, there was absolutely no point to going to the arcades.

I love hand held consoles. I just can't belive how badly Sony botched Vita. If they just launched Vita and didnt muck around with memory card.. things would have been completely different now. SCEA(COD, Resistance, Unit13, BL2.. they relentlessly released awful games on vita, kudos!!!) and Memory card are like cancer that killed the great baby.
 
As a big fan of the series, Mass Effect's 3 ending was offensively horrible. I have never had such a negative reaction to a piece of entertainment before. That 'stages of grief' comic that was made when it happened is depressingly accurate.
 
I'll say the untimely death of Gunpei Yokoi. That guy helped create a huge chunk of Nintendo's most beloved IPs as well as the controller D-pad and Gameboy. Portable gaming as we know it might not exist without him and who knows what he could have invented were he still alive.
