Biggest disconnect between a demo and the retail version?

It's not so much a disparity as it is the way the game works, but I kinda hated Monster Hunter Tri when I played the demo. I already understood that the game had a high learning curve, so I still gave the full game a shot (and loved it).

I hope this also happens to me. I bought the game 2 days ago due to GAF hype, even though I didn't like the demo.

Well since you asked...

The demo itself was already Chapter 2, but they removed a lot of the fun stuff from the game in that chapter. Playing Chapter 2 in the retail version is much more exciting. The game itself will obviously start in Chapter 1, but it's pretty boring because it's all tutorial.

Sonic Generations. Demo was terrible and made the game seem to be another boost-to-win, poorly designed Sonic game along the lines of Unleashed and Colors. Final game turned out to be great.

InFamous
The full version was kinda nice, but the demo bored me so much I didn't even finish it...

Gothic
They have actually put "area not available in demo" signs with invisible walls so that you couldn't walk away too far. It annoyed especially in first two minutes because you practically couldn't walk away from a single path until you got to the Old Camp...

Resident Evil Revelations

I actually enjoyed the demo enough to buy a RE game on launch again but the final version end pissing away all the promise the demo showed.

Fuck everyone involved with brutal legend.

A badass looking hack and slash open world game was really a mediocre console RTS game, almost immediately where the demo ends.

What the hell @Brutal Legend lol! I thought it was similar to Darksiders, just found out it was a RTS game, WTF?!

The first thing that comes to mind is the original Motorstorm demo kiosks. The framerate was half that of the retail version.

MotoGP for the xbox. People who've played both know what I'm saying here. Game is legendary for this.

It was the demo that sucked.

BRUTAL LEGEND

EDIT For More Info:
The Demo sets up Brutal Legend as something more akin to Zelda/God of War.
Since the entire demo is just fighting some enemies and then driving around in the car.
To bad the demo wasn't showing off what the game mainly was, a boring Third Person RTS.

God I was so disappointed in that. I really enjoyed the demo and when I got the game I was like "What the fuck is this shit". Game could have been really good if it was more like GoW/Zelda with that entire 80's metal theme.

Bulletstorm

Played the demo on PS3 when it first came out and really didn't like it. Actually deleted it right after.

Bought it during a Steam sale and it's easily become one of my favorite shooters this gen. Just pure fun.

dammit... yes. Great game. Terrible demo.

I'm the opposite. Great demo, awful game.

Originally, I thought Halo 3 beta with Crackdown. After the demo, it was Crackdown with Halo 3 beta. Upon playing the game, it was Halo 3 beta with an awful Crackdown.

Flawless Victory.

For me, it,s heavenly sword. Played the demo in TGS 06. Great graphic and lots of potential in the gameplay. Until I played the full game in 07. Very short and the gameplay was just average.

To be fair, it was the actual first level of the game. Nothing was different from the retail version.

Star Wars.

The Force.

Unleashed.

I played the demo so many times. I was so hyped for that game. And then... reality.

XCOM is a recent one.

The demo is basically part of the full game's very, very scripted tutorial. And there's hardly any base management. Not representative of the game at all.

I think Driver:San Fransisco is this for me. I just HATED the demo. I thought the plot was stupid and all the actual missions were dumb and poorly designed. Plus the world just really didn't work for me.

Bought the game for stupidly cheap and it became one of my favorite driving games. The jumping between cars mechanic is actually really cool and the game turned out to be a lot of fun to play.

Why are people acting like Brütal Legend is an RTS? I agree those sections sucked, but it was at most about 20% of the game. It's first and foremost and action/adventure game with the occasional RTS section. It's a shame they never mentioned these parts until we all bought it, but it hardly changed the fundementals of the game.

That xcom demo is horrible. Rpgs don't demo that well at all. The best demos are multiplayer demos. They are usually a real indication of retail. Especially beta. Every beta that I didn't like ended up the same in retail. I took a chance with d3, and got my refund check.

Anyone remember that awful Vakyria Chronicles demo?

I actually liked the demo and if that's bad compared to the full game I'm more than happy that I've finally ordered it!

To contribute to the thread I think the resistance 3 demo must be a lot worse than the full game. Buggy as hell and ugly. A lot of ammo scavenging too. Maybe not totally different from the real game but the demo really turned me off on it.

People just love hyperbole. What was there, like 5 RTS battles? I'd actually say the rarity of them is partly what made them suck, because you never had any time to really learn the systems.

This. THIS!

I felt conned out of my money.

Sniper Elite V2.

I played the demo several times and quite enjoyed it, but the full game is by far the worst thing I've played all year.
Can you elaborate a bit? I'm in the same boat in terms of playing the demo multiple times.. I'm just waiting for the game to drop in price. Is it really that bad?

Brutal Legend, yeah. Though I dunno if that quite counts, I mean, what was in the demo was what was in the game, it's just the gameplay in that portion wasn't indicative of most of the rest of the game.

Although - and admittedly not exactly on-topic - the first thing I thought of was actually the ad in the Killer Instinct arcade game where it booms out "COMING IN NOVEMBER 1995 TO THE NINTENDO ULTRA 64"

I hated it because the stealth system is completely broken. You could clear out an area stealthily, but then a new enemy could spawn directly in front of you. Pissed me off after a few missions.

The sniping, however, is good fun, and if you're playing it solely for this, you'll probably enjoy it.

I thought Bioshock was going to be more of an exploration based horror game based on the demo. Honestly, I'm kind of glad it wasn't, but the first 15 minutes or so of that game are not at all representative of the entire product.

Yeah, they told me the fun begins after fighting the first boss. Guess I'll never know until I play it, which I expect to happen soon.

Brutal Legend demo is straight up false advertising. It literally ends at the EXACT second before you realise it's not a hack and slash.

Batman: Arkham Asylum's demo.
Even simple things like walking are different. Game itself is goooood though.
