Biggest industry fuck ups this generation?

quest said:
When it double the price over last gen damn right it was a dick move. If blu would of been almost free like DVD in the PS2 sure. But not at 599.99 and the customers have spoken in NA/japan.

I'd say the pricing was a dick move not the bluray. I see what your getting at though no bluray= no 599.00.

RROD and the long road to even admitting it was a problem
$1 Billion

Lemme guess.... they should have gone with HD-DVD?
He would say they should have gone DVD-9 and have an optional SKU with BR

Side effect of this would be that BR games would be just as popular as HD-DVD games

:lol

I know it's only borderline 'industry', but Eidos strongarming Gamespot over review scores and their acquiescence to that is a pretty big fuck up that I think will continue to have repercussions this year.

Microsoft not giving Yukio Futatsugi a team of developers to work with. (and instead making him supervise stuff in Japan....).

Well now he's free and Microsoft have lost their chance.

RROD is by far the biggest quantifiable fuck up, no question about it.

The mistakes Sony has made with the PS3 don't even come close, in fact most other "fuck ups" are irrelevant when it comes to anything other than creating so-called "ammunition" for so-called "fanboy console wars". Even Nintendo's Friend Codes, while they are frustrating and seem like a step backwards to "gamers", actually have their place in the "real world" (as in, the world not populated by idiots like us). RROD, however, is a kick in the balls for everyone.

Considering their trying to push Blu-Ray was a big reason for the console's price, and the console's price is the main reason it's not doing as well as they expected, I'd say it counts as a pretty big fuck up on their part.

I see what your saying, but with bluray winning the format war, and ps3 price drops, that "fuck up" may turn into a big win by the end of 08'.

Lemme guess.... they should have gone with HD-DVD?
:lol

Analyzing this generation's "biggest industry fuck ups" way too early.

Doubt it, i'm pretty sure the majority thought the ps3 was going to dominate this gen until they saw the price of entry.

Click it, I dare you.

Please do . . . I'm quite proud of anti-BC call. Not only did Sony go from 100% compatibility to less than 100% compatibility by removing the EE with a first new re-design, they later removed BC altogether with the 40GB SKU. Validation!

sony's arrogance in general easily wins. thinking they could move hardware on name alone with an unprecedented price and nothing approaching a killer app (even now, really) will be a business tale for the ages.

I'm of the same opinion

The $599 E3 price announcement made so many users back peddle and eat crow. One of my favorite web forum reading days on the interwebs, hands down.

While I agree, I'm certain there will be many who will dismiss that. Personally, I find the "steak dinner/ get a second job" talk to be hilarious in hindsight. What, with PS3's current standing and all.

QFT.
I cite that as the day I, being a major advocate of Sony, became an Xbox 360 owner.

Ya because going from almost 80% market share to if they are lucky 30% was not a bigger than a billion MS had to write off. The 360 will increase the is market share over what the xbox did thanks to 599.99.

I guess, but I still love my Ps3 BC.

I don't think anyone will deny that the price was steep, but how is it a bigger f'up than a hardware reliability issues?

RROD

Perfect order.

The RROD is an issue, but the 360 can still sell itself as a lot of ignorant casual gamers will not know of it.

A $599 tag was more of visible boundry for the casual gamer. They would avoid the hefty tag.

It's not and both can be corrected....both are being corrected to the best of their abilities to credit both Sony and MS.

Because people kept buying 360 hardware regardless whereas Sony have been left with 0 momentum.

Becaue the 360 continues to outsell the PS3 in NA dispite shitty hardware thanks to 599.99 and pissing the pubic off. If sony launched at 299.99/399.99 the 360 would of been crushed and sony would be looking to take on nintendo. Now they are in a dog fight for second 1000 miles behind nintendo thanks to 599.99.

I recall fondly the big e3 unveil of the ps3. The oh snap moment when they announced motion controller, then the price :lol The old bait n switch. IRC was fun.

it's more easily quantifiable as a massive gaffe, i suppose. the ps2 was complete garbage quality-wise out of the gate (dre), yet it probably didn't hurt sales *that* much. it's hard to say how much the rrod cost microsft, though it surely has damaged (and continues to damage) the rep of the xbox.

the ps3 was the heir apparent and now they're fighting to make a profit. that's huge. it's hard to make the argument that without the rrod ms would be anywhere near where the ps2 was last gen, so i'd call it a smaller gaffe overall (i'd put it as easy number two on the list:)

When even Kojima himself said he had no clue about the controller?

Tell that to all of MS customers who have dealt with it.

Are those accurate figures? I'm asking. You have to admit the price drop has helped Ps3 sales.

No sense in arguing opinions any further then.:D

Not giving Wii quality games. That one is truly industry-wide. So much potential seemingly going to crap...
