Biggest industry fuck ups this generation?

Not giving Wii quality games. That one is truly industry-wide. So much potential seemingly going to crap...

????????

1) Nintendo's inability to supply retail.

2) Microsoft's build quality. (RRoD, disk scratching, noise)

3) Sony's entire launch. (Delay, Price, Shortage of units)

Everybody has dropped some balls here.

- PS3's initial price.
- 360's reliability.
- Wii's online. And most of it's software.
I approve of this post. Also, taking PS2/1 backwards compatibility out of the PS3 is a major fuck-up IMO.

$599,RROD
GTAIV
third party's on the Wii
Stamper brothers buy out(RARE wasn't worth $377+ million)
Developer fire-sale(Bizarre, Panademic/BioWare etc.)
XboxLive after christmas
Nintendo's software(DVD's!) shortages
Expensive next-gen development gone wrong(LAIR, Stranglehold etc.)

I agree with the recurring themes here ($599 USD and reliability from the consumer perspective, and lack of power/HD and friend codes from the gamer's perspective), and would like to add "whatever happened with the GoldenEye re-release (because something surely did)" to the fuck-up pile.

PS1 BC never went anywhere and as of yet they're not planning on taking PS2 compatible units off the market, as far as I know.

1) RROD
2) Really shitty press conference at E3 '06
3) PR leading up to PS3 launch (continual reduction of launch shipment numbers / encouraged scalpers and delay for Europe)
4)$599
5)Squeenix cell phone games
6)Friend codes
7)MS and Nintendo's points for downloads bullshit

$599 didn't solely put Sony where they are now. There were compounding factors.

I don't know tannod, imo this gen would be totally different if ps3 launched at 399. Mostly everyone was getting one until they saw the price. Gamers are fickle like that.

Nintendo has done everything right this generation.

MS has done OK, their quality issues have been troublesome.

Sony?

Biggest failure since the Saturn.

What this guy said, also I would add the PSP Piracy Problems as well.

Buying one for what game/games? Sony has really dropped the ball in that area. Microsoft has Halo 3 and massive supplies of great 3rd party stuff, Nintendo's hits so far this generation have been numerable...Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario and Sonic, Mario Galaxy, Mario Party, Zelda, etc... and Smash Bros. hasn't even released yet. Sony needs a freaking game to sell the PS3. What's the hold up?

Sony's price was a screw up? It hurt them out of the gate, yes. But then I guess that makes Blu-Ray a screw up, seeing as it's the root cause of PS3's higher price tags. But we're what, 14 months out and Blu-Ray is currently winning the HD format war, while HD-DVD is on its death bed. So if you ask me, Sony's initial pricing is not something you can name as "the biggest fuck up" until it's all said and done with. Seeing how the PS3 shakes out in 5 or 6 years and how well Blu-Ray has sunk into the market would help a great deal in determining how much that inital price hurt them versus how much Blu-Ray benefited them.

But anyway you look at it, RED RING OF DEATH was horrible for Microsoft. It has left a lasting impression on the quality of Microsofts hardware that will stay with them well beyond their current console.

Nintendo's biggest mistake has been alienating the hardcore user. And some may say thats not really a mistake, but I think it is.

Well PS3 is quite of an obvious one, so I'll just mention that one. Really the ignorance and arrogance Sony showcased with it is seems completely unprofessional.

The most impactful would probably be whatever Sony did to make the PS3 so unpopular.

Microsoft's defective console would be the biggest one that people let slide.

Well, their press conference in '06 didn't show shit for good games and it destroyed any credibility they had as a market leader. It was a disorganized and boring mess of a conference and the "unveiling" of the SIXAXIS controller, multiple SKUs, not mentioning that the 20GB didn't have everything the 60GB model had were all retarded business moves that got announced all at once.

There was a lot more to that conference than the $600 price. Go back and force yourself to watch the whole thing. You'll see what I mean.

Without a question, the whole Dual Shock III thing. That and the PS3's entry price and almost immediate back peddling.

Runner up would be the 360 reliability and Wii shortages.

"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games,"

"I believe that the Sixaxis controller offers game designers and developers far more opportunity for future innovation than rumble ever did. Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it's not the next-generation feature."

"Microsoft has stated failure rates to be (around 3-5%)."

"We're reaching out to every publisher, frankly every day. I'll be spending some time later today with the folks over at Take Two to see what type of support they can give our console. ... The fact is there will be M-rated content on the Wii console. EA has already announced that they're bringing 'The Godfather' to our console. And we want every single best-selling game to be available on Wii. Whatever that content is."

I bought a ps2 at launch because I loved the psx and it was priced reasonably. The dvd player was a bonus and was my main player for quite some time. The only launch game I purchase was TTT, never owned another ps2 game until Onimusha Warlords. Don't get me wrong I went to blockbuster and rented some games like Ridge Racer and Time Splitters but they weren't must have games for me. Thinking back I played more psx games on my ps2 than all the rented ps2 games I ever got from blockbuster.

Planned on buying the PS3 at launch until I saw the 599 tag. It hurt because I couldn't play resistance. 599 was too much so I waited until the price came down to 399 and pulled the trigger, I have no regrets.

This is a topic relating to the gaming industry. Besides, you can't argue that going from 120m consoles to what the ps3 is projected to sell isn't the biggest fuck up.

Not even close.:lol Say that again at the end of 08'. It's not going anywhere. Saturn didn't last long.

In addition to the above, EA continuing to screw it's customers over by putting out Medal of Honor-Airborne WITHOUT dedicated server files included. Then they made us wait for a PATCH which included it almost 2 months post release. As usual, EA put out a buggy game which wasn't clan friendly (you had to use your EA registration name) and if you had one that was from an old clan, you were SOL if you didn't register your game with your current gaming name.

sony thinking there's a market for 600 dollah consoles.
MS letting the whole RroD disaster spiral out of control.
nintendo.

I didn't say it was as big a failure as the Saturn, I said it's the biggest failure since the Saturn.

There's a difference.
