Biggest initial shock and amazement of your gaming life.

Everyone already said it but it was mario 64.
The reason is just like everyone said. Back then we didn't have the 100000000 sites on the internet spoiling every surprise about new releases before we played them.
So I just knew there was a new mario game and that was all I knew.
I saw it hooked up at the local video store and I remember picking up the control for the first time and just making him run in a circle over and over and I couldn't believe my eyes.

Biggest shock: FFXIII for 360.

Biggest amazement: In TR Legend, when Lara
discovered that she was the reason her mother was transported to the land of the undead
.

Ultima Underworld

First game I ever saw having full 3D.

Got me sad aswell, seeing a PC more powerful than my beloved Amiga :(

Next shoch was playing online first time in Ultime Online back in 1997 (quit in 2004)

The Wii not being 1:1 control and basially being a cheaply made piece of shit with a craptacular selection of games.

Mario Galaxy was great as was Lost Winds. And for me, that's all there's been.

Go get 'em mods.

EDIT: Oh wait, he's an old member. That either means he's a) joking or b) ban-proof.

First time I ran quake on my 3DFX card and watching the 'lush' 3d graphics, framerate and the glow around the lava

goosebumps.gif

First time I played strip poker on the commodore 64 and watching in amazement as the girl is topless (first time seeing boobs. was 11)

First time I played Leisure Suit Larry 3 and pressing + sign to make him hump faster

Playing Assassins Creed.

Soul Calibur DC.

I couldn't believe how good this 3D game looked at 60fps.
QFT.

Tekken Tag Tournament (JP version, not the blurred-up US one) on the PS2 was one of mine, along with Condemned on the Xbox 360 and Uncharted on the PS3.

I also have to second the entire hype train revolving around Super Smash Bros. Brawl from e3 2006 until launch. The first trailer in it's 60fps goodness was face melting, and then they made Pit & MetaKnight fight in mid-fucking-air. I was so awestruck, I had to remember to breathe. :lol

Also, never before Brawl had one online blog (The Dojo) and a few random posts and posters on forums (SmashBoards, Rockman Perfect Memories) mattered so much to me. :lol

Playing the Doom 3 alpha for the first time. Suddenly anything i thought looked awesome at the time (Unreal 2 etc...) looked like nothing compared to this CGI-movie like experience. During the first seconds when the camera flies through the Marine´s head and gives you the standard FPS view i was just sitting there doing nothing. Then i moved the mouse and realized this is truly the game OMG!!!!! :lol
Yeah dude, that alpha blew my fucking mind. It ran like shit on my 8500LE, but once I got my beast of a 9800xt I was all up in that shit. Those graphics were INSANE at the time.

Gotta go with Wolfenstein 3D. Never seen anything like that at the time.

Me, too. It was incredible. Real movement in 3D!

Before that maybe the music and graphic of The Last Ninja on the C64. Or maybe Defender Of The Crown.

not shock; but amazement : coming out of the gunship in metroid prime into tallon iv , with that music and the rain falling down onto my visor. fucking awesome.

this despite the pixelated leaf.

edit - okami too, the first time emerging into shinshuu plains, the music was absolutely amazing and gave me a sense of adventure that i hadn't felt in ages. great stuff!

Hell yes! I love that sound. The bootup for PS1 is one of the most classy I've ever seen.

It always sounded like a bunch of farts to me... :P

Sword of Vermillion... alright at the time but some NICE music.

Oh yeah, how could I forget... the Area 4 "Running Man" boss in Rez. Jaw was on the floor first time I saw that... then the guitar kicks in. I was in awe at pretty much the whole of Rez, but the Running Man probably sums up the game the best.

Colossus #3, The Knight (PS2)

runners up:
- Gravity mechanic in Metal Storm (NES)

- Full voice acting in Day of the Tentacle (PC)

- Maxing-out the volcano spell in Magic Carpet 2 (PC)

- Finding the chainsaw for the first time (PC)

- The huge bosses in Conquest of the Crystal Palace (NES)

- Link to the Past being twice as long as I expected (SNES)

- Swinging Bowser by the tail (N64)

- Train ride in Half-Life (PC)

- Chasing the Scarab through urban earth in Halo 2 (Xbox)

- Seeing Wipeout Pure in motion... breathtaking... (PSP)

- Hydra fight in God of War (PS2)

- Leaving the dungeons in Oblivion (PC)

- "I Chose the impossible... I chose... RAPTURE!!!" (Xbox360)

- Jeep chase in Uncharted (PS3)

Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 stunned the living shit out of me. Can't say the same for 3 or 4.

And Resident Evil. I never thought the amount of epic could be repeated. That is until Resident Evil 2 rolled around. :D

Then REmake blew my mind even more.

The PS1 in general was quite possibly the greatest console I've ever had. And lots of great memories surrounded it and the time period it was released in. God I miss those great, great times. ;_;

I remember when i first saw someone playing Resident Evil 2 on the Playstation, i was amazed, after the SNES and Genesis i stop playing for a while, i started drinking and going to parties so gaming was not relevant for me anymore( this was from like 14 to 17 years old)

Then during college i went to a place that had TV's and you'd pay to play N64 and Playstation games, i was playing FIFA and behind me a friend was playing this amazing looking game, it had gore, zombies, VOICE ACTING and the most amazing graphics i had ever seen. 2 weeks later i bought a PS and RE2 and to this day(i turned 29 today) i still remember that game as one of the best i've ever played and the one that borught me back to gaming.

Colossus #3
Fahrenheit part 1
Dun Morogh, World of Warcraft
Doom 3 alpha
FFXII Intro

i want to share my experience. biggest amazement is ff6. second game i played after buying snes. the moment it boot i was amazed by the snes, the sprites were more detailed and colourful and the music was so good even in mono. the whole opening alone relegate the megadrive as lesser hardware for me. i was hooked by the opening and the game keeps getting better, music, gameplay, story all so good.

still remembered the many secrets, false ending and the world of ruins. in those days, the only english rpgs i played were phantasy star, shining force, sword vermillion then. they were fun but ff6 just blew them away with the graphics, writing and music. so damn good. never had that experience again.

biggest shock is ff7. again first game i played after bought psx. the simple polygons look ugly. the whole psx era looks ugly to me. cant stand the pixelated graphics and went over to pc gaming. ff7 was not that good also to speak.

The first time I installed a Soundblaster card and loaded up King's Quest V with it enabled. Holy shit. After growing up with IBM pcs and a Tandy and listening to their ridiculous bleeping and blooping attempts at creating music and sound, the Soundblaster completely blew my mind. It was just such a huge, instant leap forward.

Also seeing the first screenshots of SNES games in Nintendo Power. I remember looking at screenshots of Gradius 3 where one of the bosses was a big transparent blob and just being absolutely amazed.

Also, going from Atari 7800 and Master System to Genesis in 1989 with Altered Beast, Ghouls n Ghosts, Thunder Force II, and Golden Axe.
It was ALMOST like having arcade-quality games in my home.

Playing my first video game, Super Mario Bros. on my first console, the NES, when I was 3. I remember being absolutely entranced and AMAZED that I could push buttons, and the things on the screen would actually move and respond to my inputs. It was almost too much for my three-year-old mind to handle.

I AM NOT LINK. BUT I DO KNOW HIM.

After that conference, I made a t-shirt that had that quote on it. I still wear it from time to time.

Edit:
Oh man, I just remembered another one. When Nintendo officially renamed "Revolution" to the "Wii." That shocked the hell out of me, and not in a good way. I was with all my friends, and I was flipping shit. I don't think I've ever been that pissed at Nintendo.
You know, until this year's E3.

On a different note, I thought of this a while ago but didn't mention it. One of the first times I ever played the Genesis was playing Mortal Kombat on my cousin's system. I remember getting crazy into it, and I'd move the controller every time I pressed a button. After that moment, I knew I was going to be a gamer.

I concur with the OP, and I think the vast majority of us were deeply affected by Mario 64.

I stood in awe, completely mesmerized for hours the first time I played it. No other game has come close to it in terms of pure shock and joy.

Yeah Mario 64 was such a absolute revelation to me. It didn't matter that every game on the system after that
was complete shit Mario 64 is the one game I believe that the term "System Seller" should be used on.

Did you just now make all of those, or did you find them somewhere?

I remember walking into a mall and there that stood... It was the Japanese Import and i was O_O the rest of the year.

When it came out I hyped the game up so damn much. It still stands to me as the best moment in my gaming history

I jizzed my pants when I first saw MKII in the arcade. I didn't keep up with game news back then, so I had no idea it was coming out. I just walked into the arcade one Sunday, and bam, in all it's glory.

Biggest shock(s): Baten Kaitos Origins - when you find out that
the sibling group you've been hangining out with in the past is actually Malpercio!

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean - when you find out
There is a traitor and his name is Kalas and he leaves your party!.

Biggest amazing moment: Some Ocarina of Time moment. I was pretty much fascinated with every moment of that game.
