Biggest missed opportunities in gaming.

I was just thinking about this earlier today, and I really wished the 3DS came with 2 front facing cameras. I imagine having a video chat with a friend, and having the 3D screen displaying him / her in 3D. Perhaps there's a lot more that I'm not looking into regarding this, but I thought that would have been awesome.

I also thought about the remote play aspects of the Vita and PS4. Well the PSP and PS3 had remote play, and it was severely lacking because of technology limitations. So fast forward to the Vita and PS4, and neither one of these devices can pick up signal on the 5Ghz spectrum. I feel like it was a massive oversight that could have been easily corrected. The Vita would have been an even better remote play device than the Wii U based on it's screen quality alone.

What are some other missed opportunities that you can recall? Maybe there's more insight as to why it happened that others can give light to.

5Ghz isn't the primary problem with PS4 remoteplay. It's still 720p/30FPS over wired ethernet to a PSTV. The streaming chip simply isn't designed for 1080/60fps.

I'd have to say the general lack of real destructibility is a big missed opportunity. Red Faction Guerilla is so lonely.

The Zelda series ditching open world design just as it (both the series and open world design) reached a tipping point in terms of popularity (with OoT and GTA, respectively).

Interesting! How much additional work do you think it would have been to make the Vita a more capable streaming device? It seems like the Vita TV went with the same internals in some aspects so it came with the same limitations.

Crytek to make an online Co op game in the Crysis universe with all the different suit types that you see inside the Rasch-Hargreave building in Crysis 2. Kind of like Borderlands but more tactical and less goofy.

I thought for sure that it was they were going to do when they acid they'd be focusing more on online games, but instead we got Warface

Nintendo's failure (?) to have a comprehensive Virtual Console service. GBA, DS, GC etc. Imagine the possibilities. I know Nintendo want to sell the new Pokemon games, but I'd gladly buy the old ones again knowing full well I couldn't complete the Pokedex or access the WFC. I can see why they don't want to do it, errors and error codes for one but come on, do it with other games.

They could take all my Rupees.

Square was making a railway management/economy sim that would have preceded Railroad Tycoon and maybe A-Train. Rumor has it production stopped because the latter game has just been revealed in 1985...I guess Cruise Chaser Blassty was more important.

Yeah this is a hugely strange one. Of all the companies in a position to pioneer this front, they were the top dog. How they're so far behind is truly bizarre.

Destiny.

It's clear from everything we're shown that the game used to be bigger and have more and they fucked it up somehow and either removed content for later or started from zero. Now it left a sizable amount of people with a taste so fucking disgusting in their mouth that it ruined the good name of Bungie.

I won't ever buy a game from them on faith alone anymore. Spent 90 bucks on a game i don't touch anymore

Epic Mickey

And this. Words cannot describe how poorly the VC is being handled.

Dragon's Dogma PC port ;___;

Also, I can't believe a Patapon Vita game hasn't happened. The back panel is perfect for drumming!

In addition to this - 3DS SNES/GBA emulation.

Actually all games that we're going to lose.
All NES, SNES, PSX and onward games that will be gone after a while and not avaliable in download form - only on cartridges, cds, dvds and if you have original console working. Eh, there are pirates and emulators, but whole libraries of games, music, work will be lost to major public because it didn't achieve same status as some series that continue to march on today.

VC is a big one and all licensed base and dependent on publishers. Game Freak makes the decision on Pokemon coming to VC or not, Nintendo can't impose that on them.

VC is still very poor though and would like to see more. Sega really isn't on-board with Wii U VC nor are a lot of companies outside of Namco, Capcom and Square.

Crytek is a portfolio of missed opportunities.

Follow-up content to Alan Wake not capitalizing on the episodic release model that TellTale eventually was successful with.

It was the perfect game to do it with: "Alan Wake: Season 2" made a ton of sense with the way the first ended. Instead, we got three pieces of DLC that failed to advance the story in any meaningful way, and two of those were lackluster at best. And now, no more Alan Wake for the foreseeable future.

It's not the biggest missed opportunity by any stretch, but it's very disappointing nonetheless.

They probably should've saved The Last of Us to be a PS4 launch title.

Sony Japan should've also developed an Ape Escape sequel for launch instead of Knack.

Nintendo failing to capitalize on the multiplayer success they had on the N64 with the Gamecube. The lack of online play and FPS on the console after the success fo GE and PD were huge misses for them. Despite the success of the PSone, the N64 was always viewed as the go to console for multiplayer gaming. And Nintendo just let it all slip away.

Capcom not keeping Resident Evil on the PS during the PS2 generation. Sure it received late ports, but it went from being the biggest series they had to being outsold by new IP's. Mikami even noted that the series may have been canned if RE4 didn't sell well. All because of the decision to move it away from a massive userbase.

Square sticking with the XIII brand throughout the entire last generation.
I like the games but still, there hasn't been a new idea for a mainline Final Fantasy game for over eight years.

Sony not publishing Demon's Souls in the West.

From a business perspective, this is a good one. Grabbing FROM's loyalty early on could've nabbed them Dark Souls (Or something very similar) as a console exclusive. Obviously, things have worked out fine for the two companies now but what could've been?

Sonic Generations DLC.
Or blowing the whole Sonic series load on Generations and not stretching the concept out into more than one game.

SEGA: "Wow, people *really* like this. ... Let's never revisit it again."

We could have had Nintendo software on Sony hardware......

Sony and Nintendo's CD project never coming into fruition. There would be only two consoles on the market, probably.
I'm so terrified of this reality, solely because of how unpredictable that future seems. It could have easily been the best thing ever, or reaaaaallly really bad.

But I can't say i'm not super curious to take a peek.

Dark Souls was made since Sony owned the Demon's Souls IP. From Software wanted to make a multiplatform game so they created their own IP, Dark Souls. They may have made a Demon's Souls 2 if Sony weren't so stupid with how they handled the game. It worked out better for From Software anyway since Dark Souls became such a success most likely due to it being multiplatform.

I don't understand why Miyazaki gave Sony another chance with Bloodborne, but whatever, I'm still excited for the game and I'm still a sucker who brought a PS4 for it lol. Sony at least is gonna treat From Soft right this time.

Wasn't Demon's Souls co-developed by Studio Japan? Either way it was horribly miss handled lol.

Haze will always sting me. Free Radical was at the peak of their game on the PS2, the concept behind Haze was brilliant, and somehow with some absolutely awful tech, the worst voice acting in history, and just a ton of awkwardness at launch, that game turned into a disaster lol. To be fair though I'm not sure what they could have done to remain in budget, and make the best game possible. Perhaps launched another title on the PS2?

Xbox.

Microsoft were on a roll at the start of the last gen and they pissed away a great deal of goodwill and momentum towards the end of the 360s life, and with the announcement of the Xbox One.

After the PS2 dominance, they did incredibly well to get in to a position where they were giving Sony a run for their money. To lose that momentum the way they did was a massive missed opportunity. They lost focus on what made them so successful and tried to push a future that a lot of the market just didn't want.

Now they are back playing catch up.

Yeah that's a HUGE one right there. The gaming landscape would look totally different nowadays if Nintendo had just continued nurturing that aspect of their brand. Their overall genre portfolio, and player demographics, would've been diversified beyond belief.

1) Atari's opportunity to do something with Nintendo would probably take the cake - they tried running out the clock but that backfired once Nintendo figured they could do it themselves.

2) Atari passing up the opportunity to be the rep for the Sega Genesis in the US (they were thinking of calling it the Tomahawk when that chance came along).

3) The VM Labs NUON technology had a lot of hype behind it circa 1998 but they decided to screw it all up by repeating what 3DO did, just with DVDs and they were bankrupt before they knew it.

4) The already mentioned Sony/Nintendo deal

5) The current drive for making new pinball games. A lot of the new guys are dropping the ball here while the market is hot for new tables. Their stumbling is letting the main manufacturer hold steady. While I don't want to see Stern go away, they became way too complacent in their game design while they had zero competitors to worry about. If these new guys can't get steam, it will fall back on one company and zero innovation again.

Granted, a lot of this depends on perspective ;)

PS3 should have seen a proper FFVII remake. Even if it meant the console never got a legit, new, mainline FF entry, it still would have been a far better outcome than the XIII saga-mess.
