Biggest shitstorm of the generation?

The bigger surprise was PS3 matching 360 LTD sales, despite launching a year after at a higher pricepoint, little to no games at launch and $599 at launch, and losing most if not all third party exclusives. Negative PR all around, corporate arrogance, Crazy Ken and his stupid ****ing quotes, PSN outage, oh man what a disaster.

Yet they managed to turn that around, build SCEW, and emerge in a stronger position coming out.
They went from dominating the market to barely being second place. They lost billions of dollars. I cant really say its still a good outcome for them.

In regards to FF 13 for the 360, once it turned out that FF13 was a bad game I dont think it really mattered anymore.

Microsoft Xbox 360 Red Rings of Death
Zelda Skyward Sword 7.5/10 - which got GiantBomb founder canned from Crapspot
Mass Effect 3 - Shitty Ending -=- DLC
Gyakuten Kenji II No Releasu Westo
Megaman Legends 3: Fuck to the Fans!
Microsoft Xbox One Shitty DRM + Spycam policy

Shitstorm started with MS, and ended with MS.

It has to be the RRoD, how can anything even come close?

A major new console with a 50%+ failure rate, I went through 4-5 of these stupid things and I've never had a console fail on me before in my life.

Complete disaster and although the PSN hack was terrible and embarassing in its own way, I don't feel it comes close to the RRoD debacle.

...what? I think you've got some wires crossed.

Gerstmann? That was his Kane and Lynch review IIRC.

1. Hard to answer, but I think Mass Effect 3's ending still hurts some fans.
2. Epilogue DLC for Prince of Persia 2008.

This generation? I guess TP was a launch title for the Wii.

You guess?

It released on the Wii before it released on the Gamecube if that's what you're wondering.

Wat.

New Vegas ran fine imo. I believe Oblivion had similar issues though. How they got away with this and no one filed a class action lawsuit against them, I'll never know. You'd think at some point their pride would have gotten the better of them and they'd have either cancelled the PS3 versions or found a way around the issues.

New Vegas PS3 ran like dogshit for me. Was having lock-ups at least once every hour of gameplay. I dread to think how badly the DLC ran. Fallout 3 was fucking horrendous in that regard. Seriously, the main game was alright for the most part, then, presumably due to a combination of a large save file and Bethesda's incompetence with optimizing the fucking content, the DLCs had constant frame drops (sub-10 FPS was a frequent occurrence), and a LOT of freezing.

Online passes and DLC being on disc are pretty big.

Mirror's Edge 2 being teased and taken away several times is also pretty big, but that may just be personal. Come on DICE, don't disappoint me at E3.

This explains quite a bit

Either FFXIII on 360, Epic Mickey on Wii, or the PSN hack.

RRoD definitely deserves the top spot. Most 360s have failed at least once - some have had to be replaced multiple times. Shit's inexcusable.

A third option, something that shouldn't have been as big of a shitstorm but it was anyway: the psn hack.

I've seen so many companies getting hacked after that and before that. Somehow they got grilled for it but others didn't. Blows my mind. If people want to hack you they will. Period.

Because they knew their network was substandard and did nothing to fix it until they were forced to. And also the fact that they waited a week to inform their users that their credit cards, passwords etc were compromised. To claim too much was made of that is mind boggling.

For me personally it;s the RRoD. In the 3 years I owned a 360 I had to send the thing in 4 times. That's much worse than the 5 minute phone call to my credit company when the PSN hack occurred.

PSN Hack and RROD are tops for me as well.

Diablo 3 and SimCity are up there too.

I also think the initial reaction to the FPS Shadowrun was pretty insane and quite the shitstorm.

Denis Dyack, Too Human and the NeoGAF vortex was the most entertaining shitstorm of this generation.

RROD is the worse for me too. I actually gave up in the end. I hated the feeling of being paranoid about the RROD happening any second while playing.

I've never finished Lost Odyssey. :(

PSN hack was nothing to me, a couple of weeks break, and I got free games. Yay!

PSN outage for both.

Honorable Mentions:
Infinity Ward departures
38 Studios collapse

I didn't think about RROD or No Russian until reading other comments - agree noteworthy.

Edit: Paul Christoforo on the list somewhere?

RROD and PSN outage.
Hardware failure and accounts compromised isn't fun to deal with.
All the other titles going multiplat or timed exclusive doesn't even compare to these two.

RROD and the PSN outage are probably the actual biggest deals. They were huge business blunders that exposed the uglier side of this gen - Microsoft's rush to get hardware to market, and Sony's gross incompetence when it came to networking.

That being said, FFXIII going to 360 and the continuing trend of former exclusives going multiplatform shortly after that is probably the biggest shitstorm. It's nowhere near as important in the grand scheme of things, but it stirred up so many loud, passionate, and dumb emotions in a lot of people.

Well every major PS2 3rd party exclusive went multiplatform this gen. It was the slow death of the 3rd party exclusive.

The entire Playstation brand has had to evolve this generation due to the death of the 3rd party exclusive, and I think Sony's done a pretty good job. Now it seems crazy to publish a big game exclusively to one platform if you have the option to go multiplat.

Biggest Shitstorm(s):
RROD and defective 360s.
PSN Outage
Silicon Knights/Epic Court Battle only because SK was the pride and joy of my hometown.

Should've Been An Even Bigger Shitstorm:
Ninja Gaiden 3.

Bioware in general. With DA2, Mass Effect 3's ending fiasco, and how disappointing TOR was, these guys seemed to have tarnished their line of work so quickly.
