Biggest shitstorm of the generation?

PSN hacking.

Y'know we shouldn't even give those Sony fucks our money anymore. But I keep opening my wallet for them and so does errbody else.

What gives? That shit is totally unacceptable.

Totally not Sony's fault. The appropriate people got convicted for it thankfully.

What? Whose fault was it they were running a substandard network (they admitted as much)? Whose fault was it they waited a week to inform their users that all their info was stolen? It was completely Sony's fault. Just like the RROD was completely Microsoft's fault. Both could have been prevented if either company valued their customers more than they valued profits.

RROD and PSN outbreak, the first over the second I guess, not for being worst but for happening at a certain time for all the community, the shitstorm were focused unlike the RROD that spamed along a larger period of time.
other that worths mention is the online passes rage, internet went nuts for months

last gen:

360 RROD
psn hacked
ffxiii on 360
dqix DS exclusive
dqx wii exclusive

this gen:
xbone drm / used game
bayonetta 2 wii u exclusive
Monster hunter exclusives on 3ds and wii u
Three sonic exclusives for wiiu

RROD and ME3 ending. Dyack's implosion made more waves on GAF than elsewhere, so I don't think it qualifies.

There's also the game developer who was arrested on suspicion of spying for the US government. That's a pretty big one.

I did not know that Fragmaster made that video. Haha. Really reminds me of his Nerdshoe character.
I didn't realize he was reading a post when i saw the video, thought he made it up... He really needs to make more videos though.

But on topic I'd say DmC backlash, but it was more confined.

I love it when people don't know Fragmaster is acting. I actually found the Smash Bros forum post that he read for the Brawl video. Was too good not to give it that treatment.

The RROD was unbelivable

I'm not anti MS, I have a X360, but that was ridiculous, I actually waited until jasper because I wouldn't even think of buying a console that I knew was going to crap out and die on me at any second

I been a gamer since the 16bit days and never EVER there was a console with a failure rate as close as the pre-jasper X360s

The PSN outage doesn't comes close to it.

The PS3 and 360 have done remarkably well in hindsight, given one suffered a highly publicised hack and the other had a long-unfathomable fault.

So big it created its own acronym.

(1) What was the biggest shitstorm of the generation?

From a gaming standpoint, the Mass Effect 3 ending. I understand fans were disappointed, but we are talking about an industry that has never had good endings, let alone good stories for the most part. When I heard NPR talking about the ME3 ending on On The Media, I knew shit had turned critical mass. I actually wasn't even that offended by the original ending simply because I don't expect game narratives to be Shakespeare or anything.

From an interested observer of the industry, the complete bungling of the PS3 from the $599 launch price to the PSN hack. The PSN hack ended up on national news and had Sony CEO's freaking bowing to apologize. That is huge.

(2) What should have been the biggest shitstorm of the generation?

The amount of stuidos closed, people laid off and just general mistreatment of average people that work in the game industry whether it be the guys that made Metro Last Light not having electricity and chairs to shit like the treatment of people who worked on RDR, LA Noire, Infinity Ward or any other project where a mass of people were laid off once a game went gold and hadn't sold a copy yet. Couple that with the fact that the Wii, until a few years ago, was completely dominating sales-wise, but had craptastic third-pary support. Instead everyone threw all their chips into the HD twins while ignoring the Wii. I'm not a huge Wii fan, but even I'm not stupid enough not to realize that it's the first platform to sell so many consoles without significant support from the industry.

Has Sonic Wii U exclusives really caused any furore at all? I know Bayonetta fans went ballistic and I'm sure there are some Sony fans furious that they aren't getting Monster Hunter, but I can't imagine anyone getting worked up over Sonic.

The Infinity Ward escort mission.

Diablo 3's Error 37 and the RROD are probably some of the worst days I've spent waiting to play a game.

Funny thing for me with the XIII shit storm was that FF used to be Nintendo exclusive before Sony exclusive. And yet people were claiming all over the place "FF HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOR SONY!" Hilarious.

And then when XIII turned out to be polarizing, people then created another shit storm about how Microsoft ruined the game DESPITE the director and producer coming out and saying "Yeah, we cut shit tons of content because we wanted to. Had nothing to do with the 360, had everything to do with the fact we wanted a super linear 'cinematic' experience." To this day people still pull this card.

$599
RROD

The one that struck me the most was Epic Mickey.
We saw the beautiful art of that game and the hype was HUGE for it.
Then we got the see the game and it wasn't like the art we saw and people were so disappointed by it (while some clinged on to hope that it'll still be a good game). Discussions, anger, etc. People getting banned left and right for saying it shoulda been released on the PS3 or 360 or how it shoulda followed the art.

Doesn't apply to Gaf because sports gamers are few and far between, but a huge shit storm on the sports-centric boards erupted because all of the EA Sports games for the new consoles were substantially worse, for features and gameplay,(and more expensive!) than the Xbox/PS2 versions. This was true for 2-3 years for most titles with the possible exception of NHL.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising first announced for XBOX 360 could have been a so much bigger shitstorm. The confusion was something else, especially among the diehard MGS fans.

A lot of things got huge reactions, so I will break it down into different categories (though the fervor of hate for all of these seem fairly equal).

Biggest screw up shitstorm: PSN hacking
Biggest fanboy shitstorm: FF13 on 360
Biggest issue that everyone brushed aside and still bought the damn thing: RROD
Biggest false alarm shitstorm: Teaser for MGS Touch for iOS
Most embarrassing GAF shitstorm: Uncharted 3 reviews and Team CG
Biggest company troll fallout shitstorm: Capcom blaming fans for no MML3

The hacking of PSN was a well deserved shitstorm. On the other hand many things that have been an outrage on the internet have been blown completely out of proportion, any angry discussion involving review scores are best put in this category. The people who grabbed their pitchforks because of the Mass Effect 3 ending also comes to mind.

No clue what the perceived biggest was, but looking at this thread it is not a unanimous selection of my choice which is Microsoft selling a defective console for years and taking several years to admit there was a problem.

I'm sorry, no amount of killer games or warranty extension gets a company off the hook for selling me a 400 dollar box that can break at any second.

I sold every 360 thing I owned after a 2nd one died on me and will not buy another console from them ever again. Just a total shitshow all around there.

I dunno if it was the biggest but FFXIII to 360 was the most fun one. Best day ever on GAF, that was. All the meltdowns.

I think the PSNgate is the biggest shitstorm of the gen.

There's plenty of other shitstorms tough : RROD, FF13, Too human, Dorito's gate and all these so called feminist scandals / matters (not so shitty stormy but annoys me...).....

1) 8.8
2) ME3 ending
3) Sony 2006 / 599 US dolla
4) Jeff Gerstmann fired over Kane and Lynch
5) FFXIII

Gotta go with these. Maybe Doritogate and the Wainwright thing warranted something too, but I feel Gerstmann was more momentous for being more or less the first gaming journalism meltdown. In fact Gerstmann is in there twice, kudos to him.

And actually I think RROD didn't get enough of a shitstorm. That that console was steamrolling over PS3 in the first three years was kind of a disgrace really. Personally I waited until Jasper.

Good point. Not sure why everyone accepts the horrendous working conditions in the game industry as a given.
