Bill Maher uses the n-word.

A slavery joke? What was the conversation about exactly? Was he trying to empathize with black struggle in some way?

There was not single bit of commentary or something that would legitimize that joke. He literally just wanted to be edgy without even adding anything constructive.

So maybe now y'all will listen when we say he ain't shit?

Anyone who didn't hear the noise Bill's lips made when they came into contact with Milo's racist, sexist, transphobic ass was never going to listen.

Empathizing with someone is pretty out of character for Bill, except for when he's empathizing with racists like Ann Coulter.

Of course only they can decide what they want to call themselves. But what some people are saying is that it would be great if such derogatory words would just stop being used, despite trying to turn it into something... positive?

I just wonder why the Black community wants to keep that word.

One black person doesn't speak for all black people.

why don't you look up the video instead of asking all these questions that could be easily answered by finding one that works or just reading the thread

Don't think there's an equivalent word in my language. Only negro but that's the equivalent to black person.

I don't see why him using it is so awful when it clearly wasn't being used pejoratively to hurt someone. Obviously using the word, or any racial slur in a pejorative way is plain awful.

Here's an unpopular opinion: I think white people should be able to sing along to it in songs. (and in reading literary passages, and probably only in those contexts). I know I don't get to decide because I'm white etc, but context and intent are important, and I feel like white people especially get so wrapped up in outrage this is often forgotten (ie: the "cultural appropriation" extending to restaurant menus gtfo). Sharing culture together is important, and is what ACTUALLY makes America great. /end rant.

Yea I get you:

I know he's banned as I quote this, but this...this is something else right here

As a white man I'm telling you he was looking for a reason to make that joke/say that word. That came out way too easily. Disgusting bloated prick.

The guy is further right than a lot of conservatives when it comes to Muslims, so I can't say I'm all that surprised his gross views extend beyond Islam. I'd wager Maher's gonna lose his show soon. At the very least, he'll have a harder time booking worthwhile guests.

Too late. It's already out there. I mean he had plenty of time to think that through before even going up on that stage.

Oh yeah, I 100% agree. He shouldn't have done it in the first place and most likely created a legion of stupid white dudes who thought the joke gave them the right to use the word. Most likely the same group of people who run with similar South Park jokes.

Everyone in this thread is being all diplomatic, and insightful but watch the fucking video. It was a stupid clap back by Maher about connecting something to something. Everyone in this thread is reaching to the outer limits making arguments that go outside his stupid as fuck joke.

He heard WORK IN THE FIELD, so his brain was like HOUSE NIGGA, to which he regurgitated

If you're not black, don't use the word.

You think that wouldn't be a hard rule to follow.

Yea, I grew up with a mix of black, white an hispanics kids and everyone was freely using that word to refer to one another without any problem ever arising. It wasn't until I remember reading about slavery in class that I realized how fucked up it was.
As an adult, I still have black friends that use that word to refer to me and others.

No he's not. His show will be fine and he'll have no trouble booking guests.

Yeah, I guarantee you Members of Congress will think twice about accepting an invitation, especially Democrats. Can you imagine the faux Fox News outrage if a Democrat sat next to someone who said the n-word on live television?

Pretty much why I stopped watching him. Once I heard how racist he was to Muslims i knew I was done with him.

Why is everyone trying to dissect actual good comedians in some effort to prove which one is worse in their racial jokes when the thread is about a dumbass joke by Bill Maher. The joke sucked and dude hasn't been relevant as a comedian for a long ass time. He's a TV host as far as I can tell.

Is that what you really want to defend yourself with? Any reaction to perceived racism on your end is merely white fragility? I'm sorry to say, you're using the concept wrong here.

Perceived racism. lol

You're all turned around and have no idea what you're talking about.

If you're white you can't use it because we don't know what your context is. A lot of times you're racist, passive aggressive, or you're real/using it like us. 2 of the 3 are oppressive, something some allies even instill well. The people in this thread are using it not like us.

ALSO: I'd argue in this case the fact that he said the word is actually not the worst part. Had he said "negro" instead, the context surrounding it is still terrible.

Also, fuck Bill Mahear. Dude is so full of hate/racism

Dear lord...

He has stand ups all throughout the year, many which sells out. I don't know if he's irrelevant as a comedian, his show is just more in the spotlight

Literally the first thing his brain goes too when he hears "fields" is "slaves".

Think on that.

Think on how quick he was in that association to crack that joke.

I put a big nope to that one. Back in the day when I was heavily into hip hop with parental advisory stickers covering every square inch of the CD cover, I would rap right along word for word on tracks but could never say that one. Instant self mute. No urge to say it, wouldn't feel comfortable saying it, not going to say it.

Let me share a short story of discomfort, related by way of rap music and me. I was sitting in my car in an apartment parking lot after work as a teenager (I think I was driving one or more people home, but at this point, I'm alone for the moment in my car), and I was playing a CD. At the beginning of one track, Redman yells, very loudly, "Negro!" It just so happened that an older black gentlemen was walking near my car at precisely that moment and gave me as sharp a look of disdain I recall getting in my life, and it wasn't even the supercharged version of the word.

Anyway, that just further underscores my original statement. Nope, can't rap along to it. Self-mute. Always.

You honestly think he would know better than to say it, especially this week. Lebron's house? Still fresh in everyone's minds. The targeted house was even in LA! Yes, Bill loves controversy, but damn... he shouldn't have used that word. If he had to make a slavery joke in reference to working the fields, it could have been done without using that word.

I don't know why you feel it's pertinent to bring up "hey, I'm black and EYE didn't find this thing that so very obviously offensive to the rest of yall"

it's like showing up to the family reunion when everybody is reminiscing over dead grandma just to proclaim "you know I don't really feel sad about her death"

Do you want a damn cookie?
I can understand what you mean man, but I know how some people here get when you say something against the grain. I did't really expect the reactions I got, I know GAF is probably mostly white, and I didn't really feel like having some white guy telling me how I should feel about something race related.
You got your opinion and I have mine, why won't you let me have that? Because I think you're one of the good ones?
Not telling you not to have a opinion my man, that phrase just kinda makes me feel bad, I sure if you black you understand. Like I'm just being me, not trying to win anyone's approval. But I'm drunk and don't usually post in serious topics, because I get overly emotional and some people just constantly pile on others.
