David Bowie is the best, but Billy Joel's up there. Just wish he hadn't essentially stopped writing pop music after "River of Dreams".

Just the Way You Are
My Life
Don't Ask Me Why
Allentown
Tell Her About It
We Didn't Start the Fire
A Matter of Trust

Haha, I almost made this thread the other day! Billy Joel is awesome!

The Stranger is such a great album.

Also, while not his best or even my favorite song, I've always enjoyed The Longest Time.

I so miss driving around in my old roommate's Galaxie 500 sedan to Billy Joel on the cassette deck. - Sunday evenings were amazing in that car.

I agree, and find it very strange that the greatest song ever written has not yet been mentioned...

Other favourites apart from the obvious GSEW:

The Entertainer
All for Leyna
She's got a way
My Life
It's Still Rock and Roll
You're My Home
Always a Woman

We were contractually obligated to like him growing up on Long Island.

I got really, really, really tired of him after a while. He certainly knew how to write a catchy adult-oriented lite rock hit though. And Downeaster Alexa is underrated.

My brother and I loved "We Didn't Start The Fire" growing up and still give it a listen to now and then. He also managed to win a radio competition to meet the man himself and got a special presentation "gold disc" type thing for one of his albums.

Love all his albums prior to An Innocent Man.

I pretty much agree with you. I even own the albums after An Innocent Man but they don't compare to his earlier work. It was probably around the time he starting changing his band in the mid 80s.

My favorite song of his is one I don't see mentioned very often but it's a tribute to Righteous Brothers and Phil Spector off 52nd Street called Until the Night.

He's awesome. I have an affinity for Bowie, Elton John, and Bruce Springsteen too. If you work in retail, every time one of their songs plays you appreciate the reprieve from all of the shitty manufactured pop music of today.

Last Play at Shea is an awesome documentary about Joel and his relationship with NYC along with some stuff about Shea Stadium too. Watch it if you haven't!

Yeah I'll give you that actually. He went a bit too pop/guitar-y.

There are song good songs on the Bridge and Stormfront though.

There's so much Paul McCartney DNA in Billy Joel's music too. He's like what McCartney should have been post-Beatles.

Huh! That's a neat observation. '70s Joel is definitely better than post-Beatles McCartney, Live And Let Die excepted... which could totally have been a Billy Joel song.

Working too hard can give you a heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack. You outta know by now Who needs a house out in Hackensack if that's all you get for your money? Well, it seems such a waist of time if that's what it's all about. If that's moving up then I'm moving out.

I grew up on Billy Joel. I think his music is awesome and based on the youtube interviews Ive seen of him, he seems like a good guy too.
My favs...

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant - I love how the tempo changes so much during parts in the song, the way it sounds in general and the vivid picture it creates.

Big Shot - Most people know or have known someone like the guy this song is about. A loud obnoxious dickhead. I find this song funny because it rings so true to me.

You May Be Right - It just has a great 80's sound to it. The lyrics are sharp and funny too IMO.

The Downeaster "Älexa" - I dont know anything about (or give a shit about) fishing but I love this song. Again I think it paints a very vivid picture of the tough lifestyle those fisherman have.

Leningrad - I used to find this song quite emotional. That poor Russian clown *sniff*

He's got so many great songs. These are just my absolute top ones.
