The German name as well:

Igel = hedgehog
Marone = edible chestnut

It'll probably always be in debate in the sense of is it chestnut and spin (Sonic?), chestnut and spine, chestnut and porcupine, etc.

Either way, he's a chestnut hedgehog.

Ever notice that the Japanese exaggerate the hedgehog tail? Same deal with old school Sonic drawings.

Pokemon never fully match the animals or plants they are based from - but at least the "references" are subtle. Notice how it looks more like a chestnut with a rodent face?

I think the 'sharp' bit is actually from a side-on angle where you can't see the curvature of the rounded edges in the cel-shaded filter making it look sharp.

Of course, that may be intentional for exactly the reason you're implying.
