Bionic Commando Rearmed First Week Sales: 130,000

I would have been more than happy to buy that on xbla or psn. PSP is the failure there. Same goes for Ghouls and Ghosts and Megaman .

I wonder what UGnG and MMPU ended up with in worldwide sales. Let's say 100k each - even with retail getting their cut, shouldn't the end profit still be higher than what BCR has pulled in so far?

It'll be interesting to see if this will keep selling well. For the sake of potential remakes down the line, let's hope so.

High Production Values + Smaller Direct Download Releases are the new hotness.

Taking it back to where breaking 100,000 actually meant something.

How soon until publishers become unhappy unless a downloadable title breaks half a million?

Didn't Blow claim that Braid did 100k first week?

No, he said 55k.

I'll be extremely surprised if BCR ends up with substantially less than 500k in its lifetime (it will probably be more). And with a small team developing for 8-9 months, it should be a nice little profit for them when all things are accounted for. Also remember that they used the 3D BC engine for BCR. And that it's selling better what they hoped for (they said 70-100k on the podcast) is telling.

Any ideas on a ballpark budget figure for the game?

When the creative director was interviewed earlier this year in a fairly large Swedish newspaper he said (translated):

Q: What's the budget for a game like this compared to a larger project?
– One-twentieth maybe. A next generation game costs 60–120 million SEK (~$10-20 million) to make. Here we can make due with around 3 million SEK (~$500,000).

Great job to all people involved! Now please consider bringing Mega Man Powered Up 2 with an advance level editor to PSN, WW, and XBLA!

Could you imagine that with level sharing ala LBP?

I just came...

Now for some real "stab in the dark" estimates:

Take away salary expenses of maybe $1,125,000 (25 full-time employees at an average of $45,000/year for one whole year) and other miscellaneous expenses of maybe $500,000 (marketing, rent, utilities, dev kits, etc...)

Maybe they'll end up with a profit in the ballpark of $1 million. Not too bad!

Swedish employees cost a lot more than that. The average cost is about 75.000 USD/employee, and i'm guessing Grin-employees make a little more than the average =)
Unless they outsorce a lot of coding abroad of course.

It's really not that impressive when you consider that there are 6 billion people in the world.
In that scale not many games would be concidered that impressive, atleast in my opinion. Sure, 1 million copies sold might be more impressive compared to 130,000 copies sold even when you compare the sales numbers to how many people there are in the world, but still. I think it is more fair to compare the sales preformance to other games instead :)

Yeah I know. It's a little upsetting that when people talk about LBP's level creator that they don't mention Mega Man Powered Up's. Plus Capcom really should release a MM:PU2 in the near future as it could possibly coast off the success of Little Big Planet (that's if it's successful). It's a no brainer buisiness move.

Please make it happen Capcom!

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Audiosurf do just about this well too? It came out, and soon after Valve was talking about the developer being a millionaire.

Still, congrats to Capcom.

Yes, this morning and again about 10 minutes ago. I cant see it at all.

edit: just checked again. It is definitely *not* on the australian PSN.

If the game will be released on STEAM would have a lot more units sold for sure....
This. I don't even use Gametap (or whatever it's called) and now I'm a member solely because of BC:R but most people using Steam probably won't even bother..

Oh well. Here's to BC:R 2!

'"And while, it's great to have my first title be not only a critically acclaimed one but also a financial success, there is a bigger picture at play here that we need to look at. Consumers voted with their dollars. They basically have sent the message loud and clear:

We are tired of meta-emulated crap.
We want the titles of yesteryear to be paid the proper respect.
We want them done right.
And if the price is right, we'll buy.

Basically, we have set a standard in digital gaming. The bar has been raised and you have let developers around the world know that if they invest the time, money, and heart into making (and remaking) some great games, you will support that initiative.

That's the way it should be. I can't wait to see what the future has in store...

Capcom and Grin you are worth every penny of this game/remake!!

Would just like to chime in and say if you haven't yet bought this, you are part of the problem. :) Downloadable GOTY IMO
That honor is all Castle Crashers, but seriously there's no reason not to buy BC:R. It's unique and so much fun.

so... um, also by capcom - is this sort of saying that 1942 was a sales bomb? That is also very slicky made and while I haven't spent much time with my copy, I enjoyed the 1 quick playthrough I did

megaman powered up failed because the art was so god damn offputting. I love the series and played Megaman, X series, remake on PSP, ZX, battle network and the one I couldn't get into, was the ultra hideos powered up remake.

what were they thinking?!

Hum... I know what emulated and meta mean, but what about "meta-emulated"? O_o

He means pseudo-emulated, I think---games which are running in an emulator which has game-specific enhancements, like HD graphics. See Double Dragon for an example.

I don't like all this talk about remakes. As far as I'm concerned, the fact that Rearmed is a remake works against it. I'd much prefer a brand new 2D Bionic Commando done in the same style.

Good thing it's just about the best remake ever.

I was totally just kidding with that comment. :lol

Do I need a gaming pad to play this on PC? If so what one is good? The 360's?
The 360 pad has a shitty dpad (unless you do that sandpaper mod) but I don't really think it's required for this one. The analog stick works just fine.

(The Mega Man Powered Up art style killed whatever interest I had in the title in the first place, BTW. I'm not averse to cutesy art either.)

After thinking about it, I don't think Strider would be a good call.

The NES version is mediocre and it has few fans.

The arcade version is very short, and it lacks any mechanics which would set it apart today. Wall climbing has been in many subsequent platformers including all of the Mega Man games since X1. Hiryu's aerial jumps look cool but they don’t affect the actual gameplay. And his weapons outlay is very limited with a focus on simple melee attacks.
It would simply be a short arcade-faithful (rather than NES faithful) remake instead then.

Plus, is there a better time to bring back Future USSR as a villain?

So he was dissing Super Street Fighter II HD Remix?

False. Not everyone has preteen/teenage male tastes.
What about PSP owners though?

Am I the only person who is more interested in the music for this game than the game itself?
I got the OST, and found it to be killer. Then I downloaded the demo to try the game out,
and realized that I'd already found (what I consider to be) the most worthwhile part of the game.

Does it get much better after the demo, or just more of the same?

The demo is a good indication of how the rest of the game plays. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Then kill yourself.

(The soundtrack IS really good though)
