Bioshock and Nausea? Is it just me?

I am as caught up with the hype about this game as much as the next guy, but finally today had a chance to sit down and play the demo.

Impressive intro - great style - it had me captivated and my wife was even commenting that it looked very cool and different. But I had a show-stopping problem...

I got so nauseous, so fast, that I had to stop playing about 10 minutes into the demo. I've played through a few other FPS's on the 360 and have never felt this happen, and certianly didn't expect it to happen on this particular game. I have no doubt that I will still buy it, but has anyone else experienced nausea too with Bioshock? I so want to enjoy this game - I am even debating moving my display further away from my couch and see what happens. It is a 60 inch Philips 1080i rear projection HDTV, and I sit about 8 feet back from it; which was a phenomenal setup for Oblivion, Gears of War and every other game I own.

Just wanted to check in here and see if anyone else had experienced the same thing - and if it passed after a certain point in the demo, and by extension, in the game itself. I had to stop at the point where
part of the fuselage of the downed 707 pierces through that air tunnel and you have to scramble away from it
. I just couldn't take it any more for fear of losing my lunch.

Thoughts?

I was somewhat afraid of this happening and it didn't.

Don't move too fast. If you go a bit slower it should help.

Also mess with the brightness/sensitivity to see if you can make it easier on yourself.

I used to get that when I was younger, like playing Blood and Doom. Got better once I got older, but it still happens from time to time, like in Half-Life 2.

Not even sp0rks got nauseous from Bioshock, and that guy is a delicate cherry blossom when it comes to motion sickness. That sucks awesomeapproved .

Maybe you'd be better off with something like Marathon. Older games are much easier on your stomach. Only thing is, make sure you turn the sensitivity up - it's damn slow at default.

Wow. Well, you're all quite correct that there are a lot of Bioshock threads on here right now but mine is the only one with implied vomiting. That makes it different. And special!

Maybe I am just a wuss. I played through Half Life 1 and 2, Gears, Halo - no issues like this whatsoever.

:lol :lol

So cruel.

i get nausea from tons of games, but i didn't get it from the demo. perhaps if i played a bit longer or something.

motion sickness medicine hasn't really helped me either, but i think part of the issue is the speed, especially turning speed. another issue is the FOV, but that's something you usually can't adjust.

i wish someone would start doing some research on it, so games could include a non-nauseating option that corrects things. i read somewhere, and don't know if it's really true or not, that this is a lot more common in Japan than it appears to be in NA, and part of the reason for more 3rd person games in japan. not sure i buy that, since i've still gotten sick from 3rd person games.

Yeah, I got kinda woozy from the thick awesome waves that eminated from the demo. At one point it got so bad I had to jerk off into a napkin just to keep my brain from exploding into orgasm-colored rainbows.

Quick, make a "Things Resistance does better than Bioshock" thread. :D

Haha, I'm not trying to say Bioshock doesn't deserve the love in numerous threads (it just amuses me) - I'm as hyped as you guys are for it, I was frantically calling places yesterday trying to find a copy and Sqweak has been giving me crap for my Bioshock love for weeks now. I've wanted this game since I got an E3 06 demo.

Just like not everyone gets motion sickness from reading or other activities while riding in cars, not everyone gets it from games. The general cause is that you are seeing movement, yet you don't feel movement, so you're brain thinks you're hallucinating as a result of poison, and it attempts to make you vomit.

But trying to find out how to make video games avoid that would be interesting.

I'm not actually an expert on this, I just looked into this exact issue when I found I could only play Metroid Prime for about an hour at a time before feeling sick.

Oh, I know. I was just giving you an excuse to make more threads. :lol

i thought this was going to be a thread complaining about the nauseating overabundance of bioshock threads

but actually it's a bioshock thread

You know what. I'm getting motion sickness from every FPS on the 360. Yet I played FPS games on PC for years, and competed in tournaments with no ill effect. I wonder what it is about the 360 games that are doing this to me.

Similar to me... I played Rainbow Six for hours a day on the PC in college, but now, no more than an hour of console FPS. Maybe being farther from the screen/bigger screen?

Only 3 games have ever made me sick to my stomach and unplayable:

Timesplitters
Jedi Knight 2:Jedi Outcast
Stranglehold demo

Im ok playing Bioshock. Not going to buy it though, I just wasnt "wowed" by the demo. shrugs

I have noticed that the field ov view in Bioshock is quite narrow, maye this is what can create motion sickness.
For me it was a stress inducing feature, as it takes time to scan areas.

I saw "Bioshock and Nausea?" and assumed it said "Bioshock ad nauseum?"
Now that would be a really ironic name for yet another Bioshock thread....

Also, BIOSHOCK.

98.1 average from 18 reviews so far in case you hadn't heard.
GOTY/D/C/M.

edit: 10 minutes too late

I am getting owned in this thread. I guess I shouldn't have even brought it up.
My bad.

People like to think they are awesome by putting others down. Also, everyone is riding a wave of hype on this game and any negative comment will result in pack rape.

by and large, it's the exact opposite for me. i've yet to play a PC one that hasn't made me ill.

Well I can add that most FPS are fine with me but played the Stranglehold demo recently and this one gave me a good dose of nausea. Most of the tiome I get nausea when I have to change the sight too quickly most other slower paced FPS are fine with me.
