Bioshock Infinite visuals used as propaganda by conservative group on Facebook

Racism is racism. Whether it's intended or not. If they felt bad about it they'd stop supporting it.

Motive is a very important factor if you're going to call an entire group of people racist bigots.

But whatever, we can have this discussion at length, you are obviously very strongly opinionated on what the exact mindset of the republican party is, but I have the feeling neither of us will be swayed to the other's argument and the thread would just completely derail. So, let us agree to disagree.

Delicious.

It's crazy how many of these groups still exist and how many people support this kind of stuff. It has been ticking upwards in recent years in reaction to the Obama election and immigration. Though it is not just an American thing, Europe has been seeing it as well.

Considering that this faux work from Bioshock was based on artwork and ideology that actually exists, it kind of doesn't matter where it came from. The Bioshock Infinite team very clearly had John McNaughton's paintings in mind. Here is his most famous:

All that that Facebook post shows is that Irrational did a good job imitating McNaughton's work. And since there's no satire inherent in the painting itself (the satire comes from its context within the game), it's not at all surprising.

Also, I remember that the Ayn Rand bullshit that was satirized by Bioshock was considered badass and realistic by a couple of guys here when it was released.

Even if they did play Bioshock Infinite, it's not as if the game made much of an attempt to critique racism/nativism. It just exploits it as atmosphere. I can easily imagine a nativist finishing the game without noticing that the propaganda is intended to be satirical.

Can some Communist group also co-opt Papers Please, too? :D
Haha.

It is no worse now than it has ever been, its just more open now The real issue is socital atmosphere, and thus how well received it is. People seem to forget that such groups as this were very very big in the 80's as were the actions they partook in. The CSA, The People's Socialist Republic of California, The Christian Identity movement, White Revolution, and all of these other groups that use the Turner Dairies as their bible all were very active in this time period in part due to the issues with Farmers and Ranchers during that period and the perceived mistreatment they received from the government. The issues that resulted in the Waco siege was a by-product of this as were several murders of police and other agents across the nation, by these groups. The ultimate culmination of that drastic increase in far right group ideology being the OK City Bombing. After that many of these groups went underground until the 2008 elections , because society suddenly became more open to their ideology again.

Wasn't the whole meaning of Bioshock Infinite to satirize American culture anyway? I'm not surprised that they would use an image like that.
I still haven't finished the game yet.

They made a new post about it:

To all the publications and visitors to our site who wrote about our post of December 14th, regarding the "BioShock Infinite" Propaganda.

We have a zero tolerance policy on racism and have removed the post, as it has done its job. We are not the "Red Cross" and firmly believe that the Constitution and the future of America is at stake. The reality is our voice is rarely heard in the media let alone in DC. Thus we are and will remain unapologetically Constitutionalists.

We want to let you know you brought us the best site advertisement we've had all year... We were litterally flooded with new people not only laughing at us, which we expected, but also congratulating us on seeing things differently and having the guts to post it...

We invite all the media to visit us whenever you need a good story and hopefully all the hordes of people will follow you as well... It's time they heard the other side of DC politics and if our plan works, we should be gaining many new readers now that they know we're here.

One more thing MSNBC, we are the National Liberty Federation, not the National Liberation Foundation... Get it right next time!!!

In Liberty,
The Team at NLF

Awful people.

Funny how now they are trying to act like they are not racist at all and knew where the image came from but only did it to get press.

Bullshit.

Fuck it, I'm not going to argue with liberal-GAF. I abhor racism in any form, I believe in the individual and that all people should be given a fair shot and that's at the core of all of my beliefs. But I'm not going to change your mind about that and you're certainly not going to change mine.

I'm one of those socialistic Europeans and those two things form the basis of my core beliefs. The difference is our beliefs in how you structure society in order to allow individuals to get that shot.

I don't think the current income & opportunity disparity in the world today - one that has grown wider since the adoption of monetarism following the 70s oil shocks - can provide that.

Where does parody end and real life begin?

Also modern day "constitutionalists" are more often than not living oxymorons. Thumping the constitution like they they thump the bible... ignoring everything but the parts that validate their hate.

That link doesn't go anywhere, but if this is the National Liberty Federation, those guys who you're calling racists -- formerly known as the South Florida Tea Party -- were among the biggest supporters of Allen West (black Congressman) and Marco Rubio (Hispanic Senator) during their campaigns against their white opponents (Alan Grayson & Charlie Crist respectively).

It's like a comedian made a joke. And someone in the audience said "can I be the butt of that joke? Thanks."

Minority republicans are seen as uncle toms, so it doesn't really matter. People hate who they want to hate.

Welcome to America

I'm not the only one thinking this is gross, right? Like, I thought the way Bioshock Infinite dealt with race issues was pretty iffy, but to see it being co-opted as actual racist propaganda makes me pretty uncomfortable.
I'm late but the Native American in this photo really makes it something special.

What's their angle here? Their press release reads like word soup.

You know there are crackpots on both sides. I'm not familiar with this group at all. Its not like some Facebook group represents people who believe in limited government. Its really sad to see people generalizing so often people who don't agree with them. The overwhelming majority of people who identify themselves as conservative these days have no racism at all and would have no problem electing people like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, or Allen West as president. A lot of people think a more limited government is more effective in the civil society and it isn't fair to label them racist mostly based on a false narrative to begin with. Very sad.
