Bioshock PC demo -- tonight at 7pm EST!!

So the file is unzipped, I click and setup, and installation begins... it ends and there's no desktop shortcut and nowhere in my programs list. I uninstall, install again, and still can't launch the demo. Go ahead laugh. Just help me. :(

V-Sync was on by default, and it capped the demo @ 60FPS :|
When I played it the second time, I turned it off, and voila! I began getting up to 300FPS:

Why the hell would you want more than 60FPS? o_O

4400x2
2 gigs ram
7800 gtx

runs between 20 and 75 @1024, but a shiteload of tearing ( i turned off vsync) with everything maxed and force lighting OFF, decent but not perfect, Ill be playing thru it on 360 then looking back at the pc version later when I have a better rig/mod community has matured a bit.

(plus im getting it "used" from gamefly for like 40 bucks for 360)

I had the same problem, you just missed an option in the install. To run the program simply browse to the folder where you installed it and launch the executable file. If you want to uninstall it just use Add or Remove Programs. No need to re-run the install file.

After installation there'll be two unchecked boxes (IIRC) for creating a desktop shortcut/start menu shortcut. Check them.

Core 2 Duo 6700, 2gb ram and a 7900GS. The graphics card is what's holding me back, but I can't buy a new one until the Nvidia refresh. Runs better than I thought it would, but for some reason the loading times are ridiculously long. Anyone else have that problem?

id say my loads are around 10 - 15 seconds

Hmm, no idea what the problem is then. My rig is very quiet so I can't tell if it's working the HDD overtime when loading or whatever, but they take about 30 or more seconds.

I think loading issues usually have something to do with your HDD.

What are the stats of your HDD?

I have a 7900GS too, and while the game runs very well, loadings are a bit long for me too (about 30 sec I'd say).

I've ran through the PC demo twice now with a fine tooth comb. The first time you load it up, it takes forever. I think it is detecting the optimal settings for your system and doing other stuff... kind of like what Battlefield 2 does. The first time you load a map in that game, it takes forever, but its pretty quick after that. Same thing with Bioshock. After the first time, the loading was MUCH quicker for me.

Couple quick grabs.

Oh and to the console defense force, not only am I playing in 1080p but I'm also playing from my couch on a 37" screen, with a diesel 5.1 set up.

Eat me.

Cool, I'll try playing around with the demo a little more. It probably wouldn't be my HDD, I have two 250gb Samsung SATA2 drives in a Raid 0 array. Never let me down before.

Oh holy shit my PC just got Raptur'd, I tried the demo and it played... eh... okay at first but when it got to the loading screen before you actually step foot inside the city, my monitor went blank and my PC started screaming and it restarted. :lol

It's still making funny noises but it's starting to calm back down. This could have happened because I only have 1GB of RAM, so I may just buy another stick.

I'd love to have a setup like yours! I'd probably splurge on a nice 27 or 32 inch LCD myself though. Nothing matches the fidelity of a monitor half a foot from your face.

Never had anything that bad. My fps is all over the place, though. So I'm picking up the 360 version tomorrow.

Yeah... I'm just not on good terms with the 360 for various reasons, so I'm trying to figure out if another stick of RAM (taking me to 2GB) will help the problem.

Is there anyway to get the game to run with AA/AF? I try setting the control panel (ATi) but running the game shows the same amount of jaggies.

Is it simply not allowing AA or am I doing something wrong?

Mickey, the game looks beautiful on your system; especially the roundness to the face of Ryan and the soaring figures right outside the bathysphere. As a mac user (3-year old Powerbook), I can only live vicariously through those shots; 360 for me.

PC gamers, forgive my ignorance, but how does the ability to change textures work? Are there multiple versions of the textures depending on the setting or are they pre/post (?) "processed," meaning built up from a base texture with detail added by terms I don't understand like shaders, etc.?

Anyway, great shots of the game. Looking forward to a PC thread with more screenshots as people get their hands on the game. Good for background wallpaper!

e6850 (stock until tomorrow when my new northbridge fan gets delivered)

EVGA nForce 680i A1

evga 8800gtx

4gigs of PC8500 ram (2.75 of which is being read in XP, I'll be going to vista soon-ish.)

Athlon XP 3200+
2GB RAM
GeForce 6800GT

Runs like crap on anything above low detail. Had to "play" it at 1024x768 low detail to even get a playable framerate which was still <20fps. Glad I've got a 360. :)

I actually didn't know where it was installed - the demo doesn't let you choose unless you go with custom install...

I installed twice after your post and both times all I get is a message saying the wizard is done and that my nvidia drivers aren't up to date... there are two boxes to check, view read me and install/get nvidia drivers. Anyway I'll try opening the game from the folder I found in my programs list, there's the executable that i think will launch the game. I'll try it again after I install those drivers to see how big of a performance boost there is. I should've just waited for Steam.

Yeah, I know 2GB is recommended but some were saying it was running good on their machine with only 1GB. But yeah, obviously I need to buy a 1GB stick soon.

I had exactly the same problem as you, but after runing the latest nvidia beta drivers for xp it seems to work ok now. Although RAM seems to be the weakest link in my rig and i probably need another stick in there.

Here's my rig:

- AMD Athlon X2 4600+
- Geforce 7600 GT (ever so slightly overclocked)
- 2 GB RAM (PC4200)

It runs so-so with full details (including global lighting) at 1280x800. However, I think I like it much more at 960x600. It doesn't look that bad at the lower resolution, and the it runs smooth as butter then (I don't know about FPS, but at the higher resolution it's a bit slow and sometimes jerky, but here there's no problem). That's with 4x AA and AF on the lower resolution, though I'm not sure if the AA is working for me, as someone else also mentioned. Either way, it's much better than I thought it would be considering the graphics card was my computer's worst link.

Oh yeah, and the game's awesome.

I don't have a very expensive computer, but I was able to run everything on high settings in 1680 x 1050. Although I turned V-Sync off and forced lighting off. I forgot to try playing with those features on. I will my next time around.

WV: Home Premium
AMD 64x2 3880+
3.25 GB RAM
GeForce 8600 GT

I also used the 360 wireless control adapter and the game felt really nice using the 360 wireless controller. I'm typically a mouse/keyboard guy, but this game just feels more natural using the 360 controller. Switching powers/weapons with a quick bumper tap and switching between weapon/power while still being able to move freely is much easier IMO. 360 controller is plug and play to, which is nice not having to map everything out.

From the Demo though I think I will be getting this on 360. For whatever reason playing on the PC made me feel motion sick (maybe it's because I'm sitting so close to a 20" monitor). Whatever the reason when I played the 360 Demo I didn't feel dizzy or start sweating so that is what I like to call "The Bonus".

Ran 60 constant ... no hiccups.. everything pumped up, 1440x900 with vsync

Specs:
Q6600 - @ 2.8
2 Gigs pc6400
8800GTS - 640mb SC

See the minimum spec? That's me. In every category (besides HDD space).

Lets go in the corner and cry a bit, shall we ? -_- I won't ever be able to play that game (no 360, PC too weak) ... f00k.

Can someone with a DirectX 10 capable system please post a screenshot. I am curious as to how different it looks with the "DirectX 10 details surfacing" option enabled.

AMD Athlon 3800+ 939
2 Gigs of DDR 400Mhz
ATI RADEON X1950Pro 256MB

I'm playing on a DELL 20" widescreen with everything turned on. I could not detect any choppyness and I'm anal about this stuff. I didn't think my system could run it to be honnest. I'm pretty sure there was absolutely no AA or AF turned on. Jaggies were quite prominent on the descent.

The game has scared the shit out of me and i haven't even stepped out the damn sub. The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic though guy on radio helpin me out kind of reminds you your playing a game.

So I don't have a mouse cursor when I start the game and if I manage to click my way into it (it's there I just can't see it,) the game is all glitched to hell. Any ideas?

seconded, and I'll also be happy (maybe) if someone with a minimum graphics card (6600, 6600GT or similar) could post some pics and words about the performance.

edit: well, at least the DX10 shots are there, haven't seen them before =/

*MINIMUM Graphics Card here* :(

Core2 Duo 6600
1GB RAM
ATi FireGL 3400, 128MB

Runs much better than I thought it would. I surfaced after the crash and I didn't think I was in control of the game - I seriously thought it might still be a movie. I was stunned to learn I could look around and that I was now in control. I was fully expecting a painful slide-show because HL2 really chugs when I put everything on hi-quality, especially in the parts with reflective water. Really a big difference here. Perhaps 2K's code is better?

When I got to the glass corridors flooded with water I thought for certain my system was going to die, but it just kept goin' and the framerate never became unbearable.

It's odd though, I can't get AA to work with the game. This is the first time I haven't seen it work in a game on my system. I tried forcing it on manually in the card settings but no dice.

bah, I won't be playing the game on this PC. The new drivers didn't make much of a difference. AT 1280x720 the frame rate averages around 30 but drops a lot too, some times goes much higher but it doesn't matter when it it's less than 20 just a few seconds later. Everything else is at high, I don't plan to play the game on lower settings. The game also freezes for like half a second, or a smaller part of a second and then continues. I don't know what the technical name for htis but it's more annoying than the frame rate. For what it's worth my system is AMD 4400+, 2GB RAM, 7900GS 256MB RAM. Edit: uh yeah and the loading was ridiculous too... just remembered to add this while going by this post.... :p

Bioshock isn't going anywhere, I'd rather play it later when it runs smoothly. I have a list of PC games I want to get and a couple in my backlog, with the exception of the original Half Life I think I'll let everything else, even the ones I'm buying soon like the Orange Box, wait until I have a better PC. No point of playing a great game and worrying if you'll make it buy barely with average specs. I don't want a 360 so it's gotta be a new PC. Either around the time new stuff gets announced in the fall or early next year. I'll have a nice backlog of games waiting for me when I do build that PC, in the meanwhile I'll order Ninja Gaiden Sigma - my PS3 will be returning from Sony this Wednesday. Hurray.

By the way, from what I played, probably not more than 3 minutes as I just made it to the splicer, the game really did look promising. It had the atmosphere and polish you see when you start playing a classic.

Normally you have different versions of all textures in the game, batch preprocessed before by the artists using some GFX program. Usually (in older 3D games) they are in different files and the game asks you while installing do you want to install those other texture sets anyway (Neverwinter Nights asks that for example IIRC).

Now I would assume that it would be way easier to just have one set of ultra high res textures (say in 1024x1024) ans have a set filter (shader) scale them down to 512x512 and 256x256 depending on your settings. Scaling down is ridiculosulsy easy to code, I did it myself you just take every 2nd or 4th or 8th etc. pixel horizontally and vertically.

But scaling down in realtime takes time and this time could be spend on rendering stuff so that's why you get preprocessed sets of textures that are loaded before each and every level. That's why if some games have 3D menus with characters or backgrounds (take Dark Messiah of M&M for example) when you change GFX settings the whole menu has to be redrawn using new set of textures and you have a loading screen after changing some settings :|

What is "FORCE GLOBAL LIGHTING"?

I assumed it's something that looks worse because that switch toggles on automatically when you move the slider to "Low Quality" and toggles back off when you slide it to "High Quality".

I had the same problem, only I had no clue we needed two freaking gigs of RAM, no wonder. This would explain the "low virtual memory" message I got before my bios-reset kicked in. then again... I have 9 gigs of free space on my "c:" .... uhg, more RAM? Seriously?

Wonder why I can get awesome framerate on HL2, but even on low settings BioShock is a slideshow for me? :(

Just played the demo and WOW! The artistic directions is ace, the way the story is told so far is great (and made me think of HL for the very beginning). Now I'm really wondering about what happened in Rapture!! While the game as a certain "survival horror" feel it doesn't seem to frightening for me.

The plasmid power are so cool that I did not use much the fireams. I prefer to freeze those suckers with a bolt and then crowbar them:D !

Sale+1!
