BioWare: Dragon Age 2 fan reaction 'caught us off-guard'

I quite liked Dragon Age 2.
Is Origins better? No doubt yes. (in every way)
But i find dragon age 2 is not the turd some of you guys make it out to be.

For Dragon Age 3, we've decided to add Kinect support, multiplayer, and the ability to play from a first person point of view.

In 10 years there still will be WoW servers going strong.

TOR? Maybe.

WoW didn't have to invent the genre, it perfected MMO 2.0

TOR doesn't offer anything above from WoW except story, and I don't see people forking over 12 bucks a month for a lame story.

WOW perfected EverQuest-style MMO 2.0...

I want MMO 1.0 back please. Lets go the Ultima or Asheron's Call route this time.

So like.... did they think everyone was joking when they released shit mountain pics and people said 'that looks like shit' >_>? Did they think everyone was joking when they took the piss of their lame quotes about the gameplay? About the characters?

I guess its hard to tell sarcasm on the internets, so they might have assumed....

That's fine if you managed to wring some enjoyment out of it. Just don't try telling me that the story isn't shit, the combat isn't atrocious and the amount of corner cutting and content recycling isn't insulting. Some people enjoy having their testicles trodden on but I don't.

The game was a lesson in how not to make a sequel.

True, but I think they put a little more love into Legacy. And MotA looks quite splendid, to be honest. Maybe it's just my imagination. Either way, Dragon Age 3 will have to improve a fair amount. No one will buy it if it's anything like DA2.

That "love" is called "actually making new environments".

Thats the biggest insult.

The game recycles more content then a budget MMO does. Which is scary.

didn't they initially try to lay the blame for the shittiness of the game on their fans?

Lol you think TOR is gonna have a backlash

i honestly dont think it'll be big enough to have a backlash. it's another mediocre mmo in a sea of mediocre mmos

I'm still trying to figure out which game GAF hates most... DA2 or ME2?
Definitely DA2. While many people didn't like the direction in ME2, you can still find enough people who have a different opinion and enjoyed the game. You can't say that about DA2.

If DA2 was an expansion like Awakening, it would be fine, but as a full price game and the direction the franchise might go in its awful.

BlueWord said:
I really don't understand what the fuck happened with DA2.

They invest a lot of money and peoples to develop the MMORPG and Mass Effect 3... so Dragon Age II has been done in their spare time with a minimal budget. Perhaps this is what has happened. And the 3dcities made by Bioware have to change, you can not set an entire game in a town if you can't build a beautiful one.

It's already got the preorders to easily have the biggest launch on MMO history.

I quite enjoyed the story. Especially the personal character stories.

Combat is oversimplefied compared to Origins.

Content recycling is indeed insulting.

But somehow the story and dragon age setting kept it enjoyable for me.

cool. that means it'll have the biggest dropoff in mmo history too

i look forward to seeing how it pans out

Can't really remember where act 2 ends and act 3 starts :-/

But i have to say that it were the individual stories of the party members that were most interesting to me.

@ Rik_shithaus: You are right. If you see it as the direction the series is going, it is not looking good.

What about the ending?

Everyone is these days >_< so sad...

Best part is that the COD audience doesn't give a shit about RPGs, even with the magnitude of dudebro marketing going on. All they've done so far is scare away their loyal RPG fanbase. (me included)

Biggest selling Bioware hits; Dragon Age: Origins first place and NWN second...

Sipowicz said:

Yeah, that's what you get for catering your games to a pretend audience that wasn't even interested in the first place.

Oh and lets not forget their opinions on playerchoice in an RPG; never forget

to be fair though, a lot of their "direction" would have come from their publisher

look at what they're doing to ssx, or syndicate. look at what they turned command and conquer into

Lol if you say so. It's gonna be like ME2 I reckon. Universally praised, even on gaf too. Until a year later when the random hate starts up again.

Anyways DA2 was a bad game. Not sure what that has to do with ME or TOR though. Plus TOR has James ohlen. How can ya hate that guy

I think DA2 sold slightly better initially, probably due to the fact you had to pre-order 2 months in advance to get the complete game, but then dropped like a stone once word of mouth got out.

I still don't buy the new audience nonsense. DA2 sold significantly less so no evidence of a new audience. I like I imagine many others bought DA2 due to either DAO or the Bioware reputation so no evidence of a new audience there. They clearly had to 'pay'
supply a large advertising budget in lieu of good scores
to get they sort of reviews from PC gamer and The Escapist and those have been universally derided.

The 'new audience' is clearly only meant to pacify shareholders and lets face it keeping shareholders happy is now their prime motivator, it sure as hell isn't customers. Who would have thought when EA bought Bioware for what was clearly a ludicrous amount, their reputation would fall so quickly?

Dragon Age 2 wasn't a complete loss as it made some very interesting and positive asthetic and canon changes (See: Qunari) and some interesting plot concepts. I liked the idea of centralizing to one city and having the plot not being about saving the world but simply following the main character.

But its a failure due to the extremely short developmental cycle, very poor combat mechanics changes (another wave!), a story that, though real good at times, became abymsal in others and especially at the end, and the reused dungeons and maps. And that's going nice on it.

The Metacritic score of Dragon Age 2 for the PC of 82 is about right if a touch high. But compared to the score for Origins on the PC, a 91, its just a poor sequel.

Lol da2 sales must have nosedived

If Codhand's numbers are accurate, then it looks like it started stronger for Week 1 and then its legs went out from under it.

So it sounds more like you enjoyed the part that wasn't the main story. The companion quests were largely their own things and mostly handled pretty well.

Act 3 was everything once the Arishok situation was concluded. Basically when all the mages and templars went batshit insane for no reason.

I actually liked DA2, granted it wasn't a great game by any means it did take some steps backwards compared to the awesomeness called DA: Origins, but it's not a bad game at all.

Gonna buy DA3 if it came out, I like to see what they are going to do next.

Oh and another thing I want to rant about, the game is still a technical train wreck, they just don't care about giving after purchase support, just check this;

http://social.bioware.com/page/da2-patches

Dragon Age II Patches

On June 1, nVidia released their new 275.33 drivers. We have confirmed that these drivers can cause a 100% reproducible crash for some users. Although Dragon Age II PC Patch 1.03 was released around the same time, this specific crash is driver-specific and is unrelated to the patch.

We are working with nVidia to ensure they correct the issue in their drivers. In the meantime, affected users are advised to roll their nVidia drivers back to the 270.61 version to correct the problem.

That's been there for almost 4 months now, so you want me to use a 6months old driver for a single game that has strange issues... I mean come on... And don't even get me started on the broken archery in DA:O!

Nerdrage!
I'm angry because I care(d)...

I'm presuming you are playing the beta with a good solid pedigree in playing the MMO genre in its various forms. So tell me from one MMO fan to another why exactly will it be "grand opening, grand closing"?

I'm sorry you are so heavily invested in EA/Bioware/new Galway Bioware office that you don't see TOR isn't anything new or special.

I don't know why you think people will keep paying a fee to play a game that is about a storyline, for which single player games are for. Not to mention to core mechanics of the game (trifecta) are the same as in any other mmo 2.0 and people who migrate from other games will soon get bored exactly because of this.

This game is going to get run over by Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3 and any WoW expansion hard and quick.

The reaction caught them off guard because they weren't considering what the fans wanted or any consequences of rushing a product to market. And that's the truth.

Pretty much this, and I enjoyed DA2. I would really love to hear from the "new fans" they love discussing. Did anyone on GAF buy DA2 without first playing DA:O? I'm curious to hear from the legions of new fans they harp on.

Protip for Bioware: Stop going after Call of Duty numbers, it will never work for a single player RPG no matter how hard you dumb it down or how hard you market it. Create a solid, mature RPG with some depth on a reasonable budget that doesn't treat the player like a moron and you'll be just fine.

Basically, just emulate CD Projekt from now on.

I dont know if I will even buy dragon age 3. The guys behind DA2 have a really hard time to tell the truth that they made some huge misstakes with the game, and on top of that they are spinning this pile of crap further with talks about merging DAO and DA2 in DA3.

I like how you're deluded enough about Bioware titles that you're rewriting history.

Am really looking forward to seeing this new audience when DA3 struggles to sell 100k.
