Well, I suppose if all you know of bjork is lol swan dress vespertine and ??? Medulla you might not think her music is very electronic/dancy.

Violently Happy is pretty dancy too.

I'd agree that you could dance to a lot of Debut, but Earth Intruders has a different kind of (danceable) beat that is more current with pop songs today.

Pitchfork was wrong about 'My Juvenile', that song is about Sindri. She's said this in multiple interviews.

For people wanting to get into her music, i'd say go in order so you can here how her style has evolved album to album.

Debut - Post - Homogenic - Vespertine - Medulla - Volta

I think Pluto was a pretty zeitgeisty dance beat when it was released.

'Declare Independence' reminds me of Pluto actually. Its a ****ing beast.

I also agree that Bjork's album are best digested in order (don't forget Selmasongs!)

God I love Bjork so much.

It's about Sindri? Damnit Pitchfork!

And yea, I've listened to all of her official albums outside of Medulla. duderon gets to the point I was trying to make. Perhaps back in the day those songs were in line with Pop music's club scene, but I didn't particularly see it as well since I wasn't really around then for perspective.

Wow, i'm seriously loving this. Just got it off projectw, shame the whole album but the remixes are at 128. I guess i'll be buying a physical copy for the car. Can't get cdrs to work in the car stereo.

really getting into this one. i think 'innocence' is still my favourite track, still not sure about 'declare independence'. reminds me a lot of something pj harvey would do (which is a good thing) but on here it feels a bit out of place.

I only saw the first day of Coachella, but...damn! I caught Of Montreal, Arctic Monkeys, Bus Driver, Interpol, and Bjork. Great shows all around. First time I've seen Bjork live, so it was pretty amazing and she played a few songs off of Volta as well as past stuff. Amazing and she was really ****ing great...best performance of that day I went. Definitely getting Volta based on Earth Intruders and Innocence. Pluto was the best part of the whole thing.

My local store was selling this a bit early so I picked it up -- really mixed bag on first listen. "Wanderlist," "Vertebrae by Vertebrae" and "Hope" are standouts to me so far. "Innocence" and "Declare Independce" are just awful, jesus christ. Ugh.

I don't know how anyone can dislike "Innocence," but to each their own.

Because it's totally tuneless and annoyingly abrasive.

Bjork seems to like it.

So do I :P

I actually love the abrasiveness and how different it is than pretty much any other song you'll hear. Probably my favorite song from the Timbaland/Bjork collaboration. Although Hope with the Kora is amazing, too.

I've seen her a couple times live now, and Pluto is almost always the song that gets everyone going. It's only funny because when Homogenic came out, critics had an absolute field day with Pluto, with one popular magazine saying she went "straight Yoko" on it. I'm still not into Volta nearly as much as I did Homogenic, but it's a welcome change from the Vespertine/Medulla period which was starting to look increasingly scary.

I think that is the version that comes out here on the 22nd.

Yeah, it's listed at Best Buy as releasing on the 22nd, which is retarded, I don't want to wait any longer to buy the album, but I would like to get the 5.1 mixes, though it would be better served to be a SACD or DVD-Audio disc and give us better quality than Dolby Digital or DTS.

:lol I'm listening to the NPR stream and I hadn't listened to anything from Homogenic for so long that it completely threw me for a loop that the first thing I thought about when listening to Hunter was Metroid! :D

Oh, and whoever thought the packaging on this album was a good idea needs to be shot.

Oh Nick, of course you don't like Vespertine.

I listened through the whole album.

Some tracks are...okay I guess. I don't know. Just need to give it a couple more listens through maybe, not nothing's grabbing on to me the way some did in the past.

Innocence was good though!

It certainly is not Bjork's best album.

I dunno. I'm not a fan of her duets. The one on Selmasongs should have stayed there. Dull flame of desire could have been so Isobel/Bachlorette-ish if it hadn't been a duet. Bjork creates her own emotional landscapes, that putting other people in them just seems off to me.

I guess there's nothing wrong with evolving one's sound, but string orchestration was a big part of the appeal of her music to me. This album uses a lot of brass, which just doesn't ring right with me. The last time she used brass that I can remember was the Anchor song, and it was much less prominent.

Give it some time, dude. I was a bit disappointed at first, also. I agree that the brass is a huge departure from strings, but it just works. The album will never be my favorite of hers, but I can enjoy it thoroughly now.

There's really no reason why anyone should dislike Vespertine. It's just an amazingly visual masterpiece. Put on your favorite headphones, crank the volume up and listen to all of the intricacies of the songs. It still blows me away with each listen.

Most gay people I've met don't like vespertine. That's all I'm saying. I could dig further as to why, but why bother.

I'll give the album some time. Most things in life take time to get on my good side.

Should've been lower.

Personally, I'd throw it a 7.0 or so. Its a bit schizo but more then half the songs have gotten better with each listen, a couple have started to fade, and a few (Wanderlust ugh) have drifted into 'unchecked' iTunes territory. Still, the strength of the album really comes from tracks 3-9, and they're seven songs I'd gladly put next to her best stuff.

Whose bright idea was the sticker? Ugh.

Giving it a first listen now...

WTF are you talking about?

Anyway, this album is growing on me... I can't help but be disappointed but it has it's moments definitely. If I was forced to give it a score I'd say it's about a 7 1/2. Still can't wrap my head around "Innocence," which is quite possibly the worst Björk song ever. I find that I like the quieter moments better on this record, "I See Who You Are"/ "Vertebrae by Vertebrae" is an amazing 1-2 punch. The beats on "Wanderlust" are too heavy, they sort of ruin it a bit for me. "Dull Flame..." is gorgeous, but Antony outshines björk which is kind of sad... I mean, "Submarine" is one of my favourites from Medúlla and Björk totally outshines Robert Wyatt on that song even though she's barely on it....

I'll do a track by track review tomorrow...

what? it's been my experience.

the gays want her dancy electronic beat music, especially pluto.

and these aren't even my words.

Are you seriously trying to tell me there is no conceivable way someone can dislike Vespertine?

I don't like the album.

With masterworks Post and Homogenic, I felt it was boring and pretentious, with too many crazy sounds going on everywhere and not enough substance. Yes, I realize most Bjork fans feel it is her strongest outing. I don't.

I'm saying I can't understand how someone could dislike it. It's a different album than her previous works, but it would be boring if she had a similar sound album after album, no?

Kev, give Wanderlust another chance. I think it's one of the best songs on the album D:

i loved pluto back when everyone hated pluto

does this mean i'm gay :(

please say yes for my sake

You're only gay if you get that fuzzy feeling around boys that interest you.

I like Pluto, and I also like Vespertine. I don't think Homogenic is my favorite album though. I really liked Post and Vespertine.

Nick, you tend to speak in the negative, rather than talking about what you do like. I don't know if it's particularly gay or american or what. That's pretty much what I was saying.

Man I want to hear this so bad, but like someone else earlier in the thread said, I got too spoiled by Surrounded, so I sit here patiently waiting on my UK LE copy to arrive from Amazon. At least I have the NPR concert stream to keep me company.
