Happy Birthday Half-Life! We'd like to thank Valve for creating this masterpiece; an important part of gaming history. Nobody on this team would be where they are today if it weren't for this amazing, inspirational game. We are lucky to share in a tiny bit of their legacy.

To Celebrate Half-Life's 20th Anniversary, we have something special to share. Our first trailer for Xen! Be sure to go full screen and crank it up to 11!

...

Our goal is to release Xen on Steam in Q2 2019.

They're (hopefully) making this more fun than in the original.

Cool beans. How has is taken so long to make Xen though? They did such a good job with the rest of the game but made the Xen sound like it was some kind a monumental task.

They have totally remade Xen. Its much longer and more elaborate than the original.

This looks seriously beautiful. A lot of wallpaper opportunity from this.

Xen is very unique asset-wise so while in the other chapters they could reuse props(like objects,enemies,scripts,etc...), Xen requires a lot of unique work(almost like making a new game). Also in the case o Xen,the devs are not simply remaking beat-by-beat the original, but expanding and improving those levels. (because a lot of people think OG Xen level design sucks)

For instance, they mentioned that you could finish OG Xen in an hour or two but in their version it will take around 6 hours.

Wow, they've made Xen look absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait to experience this. Also, what a wonderful and pleasant surprise this morning. :)

best gaming related video i've seen this year, absolutely love what they've done with black mesa, got my save waiting for this to drop

Damn, that looks dope! I always loved the setting and mood of the original game. Great to see it with a new coat of paint.

Really happy that i supported this team, as they really shown they cared about the original work. to a degree i was not sure was even possible... Black Mesa Xen will most likely be the most immersive Alien world you ever experience in a video game... the amount of attention to the organic life forms is just remarkable and then the signs that Humans have been running loads of experiments in this alien world building there iron fortresses and travel routes, as well as small laboratories is just amazing....

Is this still on the Episode 2 engine? This looks leagues better than any other Source game.

The current part of Black Mesa is some of the best gaming available. I'm definitely ready for Xen.

Holy crap, can't wait. Black Mesa was a straight 10/10 for me when I first played it this year and I'll replay the whole thing once this is out. :)

this is a matter of taste really,, i guess some people don't like Alien, fantasy worlds... but Xen update will have excellent value to play through, judging by Black Mesa's competent in level design... again the level design in Black Mesa remake has been out of this world from day one.

At this point, Valve should just send some money and a few of their developers to the Black Mesa team to polish this up even further and turn it into an official Half-Life 1 remake. This is as close as we will get to one. Zen looks good, by the way.

Trailer looked nice, but I honestly did not like how Black Mesa played. I've gone through Half-Life a dozen times probably, I love the combat in that game, and BM really shit the bed in that department (with the HECU grunts especially). So as pretty as this is, unless it plays well I'm not super interested.

This is what I realized too and it hurt. I just don't though the mod plays well.

There's several reports about progression-breaking bugs, crashes, things looking odd...etc so I'm gonna have wait until it's out beta.

Can you go into detail, I've always heard BM was bad but I never bothered to really investigate why.

The game has a 94% approval rating on Steam, so it's not exactly "bad".

In the original Half-Life, the HECU couldn't fire and move at the same time, so a lot of their time in combat was spent repositioning, which made them seem intelligent and gave the player more time to breath. In BM, they run at the player while firing, so you pretty much have to take them out instantly, which can make the combat flow less satisfying. The team has already re-written the A.I once (since the mod release) and have tweaked the enemy fire cones to make them less frustrating. (In the mod the HECU target you instantly with pinpoint accuracy). They will look at the A.I again once the game is out of EA, but because the encounters are designed for the existing A.I, it's basically too much work to start from scratch. So they will tweak what they can.

As far as Xen goes, the Agrunts have new A.I which is pretty much what the marines should have been, so there is no reason not to play Xen because of A.I concerns.

Around 2011~2012, Black Mesa was a free mod. There was a polemic where some fans asked how they could contribute moneywise with the project, and the devs said they all had good jobs, didn`t needed money and the project was just a hobby, so the fans should donate to charity.

After a year or so they announced the paid version for Steam. I don`t know if the money acquired is donated to charity.

Anyway, anyone else remember this or i'm getting crazy?
