Took me a while to realise Lord Flasheart was Rik Mayall from the Young Ones

"She's got a tongue like an electric eel, and she likes the taste of a MAN'S tonsils!"

I loved Bottom as well.

I remember that quote haha.

It's the only "cunning" line that has never, ever made me laugh. I guess it's because it's said with such a defeatist tone, in the midst of the characters terrified and ready to face their own deaths.

I was obsessed with this show as a kid. The second series will always be my favorite. I always wanted more Blackadder, but I don't really think you could get the magic back if they'd do it now. Speaking of that, there has been talk recently of a new Blackadder movie about the gang having to escape a German prison camp (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/08...ckadder-movie-will-be-a-colditz-escape-story/). Rumours like this have been popping up now and again over the last decade or so, but this is apparently the first time Rowan Atkinson himself is interested again. I never understood why he was so against the idea while he was still willing to make those awful Johnny English/Bean-movies.

If people want a taste of what a modern Blackadder would be like, Atkinson (along with Baldrick) appeared in a sketch in the Royal Albert Hall last November. It was all about the banking crisis, with a present-day Blackadder - an idea I think would actually work pretty well for a new series, seeing as how it's all about greed. Sadly no full recording of it exists as far as I know, although there are short clips on youtube. The entire script is available on blackadderhall.com as well. Not the best Blackadder has ever been, but it was insanely thrilling to Blackadder and Baldrick together again.

Edit: Here's John LLoyd's quote on what the upcoming movie would be like:

Rowan and I had this great idea, because we are all getting a bit old, of doing a kind of Dad’s Army… They are a platoon in Walmington-on-Sea where they get kidnapped by a German submarine and taken to Colditz. They then have to escape. Because Tony Robinson is probably very near 70 now he would be just about the right age. We’d do it as a Blackadder – it would make a good movie, I think.

I'm not sure if bringing this back would be a good idea (these kind of things fail more often than they succeed - the Blackadder Millenium movie was already a bit below the standards of the original series - but the 10 year-old in me can't wait to see this happen. It's probably a good idea to do it as a movie instead of a new tv-series, although I do miss having BBC comedies of that quality on tv.

I adore seasons 2 - 4. Some of the funniest stuff ever committed to film/ video/ hdd.

I sometimes see tony robinson on time team re runs and just laugh. Same with the others on their shows.

It's up there with fawlty towers, monty python, yes minister/prime minister.

Blackadder: Tell me, young crone, is this Putney?
Young Crone: [cackling] That it be! That it be!
Blackadder: "Yes, it is," not "That it be". And you don't have to talk in that stupid voice to me, I'm not a tourist! I seek information about a Wise Woman.
Young Crone: The Wise Woman? The Wise Woman?!
Blackadder: Yes. The Wise Woman.
Young Crone: Two things, my Lord, must ye know of the Wise Woman. First... she is a woman! And second... she is...
Blackadder: Wise?
Young Crone: [normal] You do know her, then?
Blackadder: No, just a wild stab in the dark - which, incidentally, is what you'll be getting if you don't start being a bit more helpful! Do you know where she lives?
Young Crone: 'Course.
Blackadder: Where?
Young Crone: 'Ere. Do you have an appointment?
Blackadder: No.
Young Crone: Oh... you can go in anyway.
Blackadder: Thank you, young crone. Here is a purse of monies... [she tries to grab it] which I'm not going to give to you. [walks in]

Gold.

CAPTAIN BLACKADDER
I was wondering whether, after being tortured by the most vicious sadist in the German army, I might be allowed a week's leave to recuperate.

GENERAL MELCHETT
Excellent idea. Your commanding officer would have to be stark raving mad to refuse you.

CAPTAIN BLACKADDER
You are my commanding officer.

GENERAL MELCHETT
Well?

CAPTAIN BLACKADDER
Can I have a week's leave to recuperate, sir?

GENERAL MELCHETT
Certainly not!

CAPTAIN BLACKADDER
Thank you sir.

GENERAL MELCHETT
Baaa!

I love the great booze up edmund scene from season 2. The look on edmunds face as he's trying to think of an explanation infront of is aunt is awesome.

Blackadder: How are we getting on?
Lady Whiteadder: Not good. Let us discuss your inheritance.
Blackadder: Oh good. Drink, first?
Lady Whiteadder: Drink!? [slaps him twice] Wicked child! Drink is urine from the last leper in Hell!
Blackadder: This is only water. This is a house of simple purity.
[A drunken Monk bursts into Blackadder's Puritan dinner, vomits in the fireplace and staggers out]
Monk: GREAT BOOZE-UP, EDMUND! [There is an awkward silence]
Lady Whiteadder: Do you know that man?
Blackadder: [looking behind him for another man] No.
Lady Whiteadder: He called you Edmund.
Blackadder: Oh, know him! Oh yes, I do.
Lady Whiteadder: Then can you explain what he meant by "Great booze-up?"
[Very long pause, as Blackadder thinks]
Blackadder: [haltingly] Yes, I can. My friend is a missionary... And on his last visit abroad... Brought back with him the chief of a famous tribe... His name is Great Boo... He's been suffering from sleeping sickness... And he's obviously just woken... Because, as you heard, "Great Boo's up."
Percy: [almost suffocating from holding his breath] Well done, Edmund.
Blackadder: [getting up] And I think I'd better go and visit him. Perce, over to you.

another great scene

Though it leaves out the ending reply from edmund

Blackadder: Oh, yes. We are proud of our comic serving-wench voice, aren't we? Just because we can say 'Zur' instead of 'Sir,' it seems at all social gatherings the tedious little turd who keeps putting on amusing voices.

One of my favorite British comedies of all time. Even the regrettably lackluster first season holds a sweet spot in my heart.

Just as a side mention - one of the best dialogue lines ever comes from the seldom seen Christmas Carol:

Edmund: Ah, Melchett! Greetings!
I trust that Christmas brings you its traditional mix of good food
and violent stomach cramp.

Melchett: ...and compliments of the season to ]you[, Blackadder.
May the yuletide log slip from your fire and burn your house down.

Love that line. One day I hope to use it.

Seasons 2 and 3 are the apex of British comedy. There are some really well-written punchlines that often get overlooked as well. My favourite:

'Look, cretins. The bag is there in order to obscure Baldrick's own features, and many might think incidentally that that would be reason enough for him to wear it.'

An absolute classic. Blackadder Goes Forth is my favourite, but 2 and 3 are close, the first series didn't click for me at all though. I do like the pilot episode, which is basically "Born to be King" from series 1 only with Rowan Atkinson playing Blackadder the way he does in 2.

Wibble.

Such a great show. I thought the second was probably the strongest. I did enjoy the first one though. So many great moments: "That's my horse!!!"

Utterly brilliant comedy. Series 2 and 4 get the most love and probably rightly so, but I'll always have a soft spot for the first series too. Brian Blessed is probably why though!! He kind of steals every scene he's in.

Brian Blessed is great in the first series.

To be honest the first series isn't that bad. It just isn't up to the quality of the later series.

Goes forth will always be my favorite but they were all hilarious

"God it's a barren featureless wasteland out there"

'Sir that's the wrong side of the map'

XD

"What do the mushrooms stand for"

'Well it says mine... So whoever owns this map owns this part of the field'
