Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII Review Thread

How did you get ahold of the retail version of the game? How much time have you had with the game? Had you had an indication along the way that things were not turning out well (like you mention in your impressions), or did you get a bomb dropped on you after promises of additional work?

The demo....fugggly looking game.

I'll play it more, but thats the first thing that I noticed, couldnt help it :P

One thing I don't like in the demo is that when you destroy a plane, the crashing animation is just there for show. You'll literally fly through the crashing plane like it wasn't there.

I'm a reviewer, I've been playing all day on and off, pretty bomb-shell like. Although I did play a demo earlier this year which wasn't very good, but I wrote it off as 'early build problems' in my optimism that this game would rock. It was pretty close to final turns out. Well that build had framerate problems aside from the ailments that are not cured and I don't notice those framedrops now at least.

It's all like that. I'm doing a mission now where there is a runway with parked Stuka's. I can blow them all up, but it doesn't matter. there will still be stuka's taking off from the airfield. Totally retarded.

Plus the mission is impossibly hard to winas a result. Seems to be some kid of bug that was never fixed or something. Because the dialog is actually 'destroy them before they take off'. But you can't, since when you do it doesn't matter.

This sucks, I didn't even play this level yet when I wrote my raving rant, it only gets worse.

EDIT: The problem lies in the lack of explaning and consistancy. They don't show you in the objectives what is the requirement for stopping the planes from coming, they say destroy them before lift off, but the objective is 'destroy the airport'. So I have no clue what to do to prevent them from getting off the ground and destroying the bombers I protect. I can destroy the flak guns but then the planes kill them, I can attaack the planes but then the flak kills them. It's not fair, simply said, since it's inconsistant and unbalanced. Doesn't feel like it's fun, and it's like the worst thing you can do to ruin someones gaming experience is making something unfair and inconsistant. It doesn't even matter if it's hard, but it's broken this way.

The demo had nice graphics but it felt really shallow to me.. I'm used to flying lots of flight sims on PC though so I would prefer something with more "real" physics obviously...

Well, it looks like I will not buy every March release after all. The voice acting bugged the shit out of me!!!!! After games like GRAW, Burnout, and Oblivion, this game just doesn't seem to have it. I was literally yawning as I played this demo. What a big disappointment. And thanks to Kobold for putting the truth out there (or at least his opinion).

Yea, agreed. Not that great. Not awful...but not worth buying.

Agreed, you just saved me 60 bucks....

Well, I liked it. Although I am a WWII game fan, so any game in the setting gets a lot of leeway with me. This is the first flight game I've ever played that I instantly got a handle on the controls, so that's a big plus, too. I thought the graphics were very stylized and slightly above average. I don't give a crap about the fonts. Even if the single player in the full version turns out to be so-so, the insane amount of multiplayer options (16 player dogfights!) makes it worth a buy in my eyes. Kamikaze this weekend, baby.

They're also the same website which gave The Outfit 6.7, and I've been enjoying the hell out of that. Gamespot can lick my sac. I think everyone's underestimating the hilarity which will be multiplayer Kamikaze, baby.

Yeah that is right, they did rate The Outfit atleast 2.0 points higher than they should have. :lol

When you have a new system, a number of people are going to enjoy every game. I can picture people shooting each other down over Xbox Live, just by virtue of the fact that this is the first game of its type on the system. (aside from BC with Crimson Skies) Oh wait, get that. It's 5 bucks.

So you've played the full game, then?

I've already played Crimson Skies. There is no Kamikaze option available.

I have now officially finished ALL but the arcade missions (which are soooo tedious and dull....) in UNDER 10 hours. I estimate around 6 hours for the campaign and 3 hours for getting all medals, beating all aces (takes seconds, per ace...) and doing the mini campaign.

I stand by what I said earlier. There is a complete lack of compelling content in this game. I don't know if a 6 is even too high, though I haven't tried the multiplayer yet.

Hahaha, I can't believe they used MS Comics in the game. that's just insulting.

I hate the font in Marble Blast Ultra and most of the XBLA games. Devs get lazy now that you need big fonts and they just use whatever is free with the devkit. Pathetic.

Almost all the Japanese X360 software uses fucking MS Mincho. It's horrible, and people complain because it's the same font that they see all day long at work on Windows XP.

Bummer. Only 7 achievements are available in the game? That is sort of lame too. Why can't all developers just try and put a little more effort into these achievements? Lazy bastards. :/

I'm not Kobold, but I can say that the Outfit rocks once you get a grip on the controls, which takes about an hour of playtime. The maps are all really cool and varied. The online multiplayer is where it is at though. Single player is a throw-in in my opinion.

I would have given the outfit between a 7.9 and 8.3. The vehicle controls are not as bad as the reviewers made them out to be once you get used to them. They are the same as the far cry vehicle controls. It makes a really nice break from GRAW since it is a different experience.

My .02

Can you chance the controls? To a more realistic one like Ace Combat?

For someone who doesn't like the game you sure are playing the shit out of it. :lol

I just checked his gamercard there and he's been on this game all day now.

I just played one game online, and got completely stomped. It was like I was just a flying target for the other players. Zero kills. How can people be such aces already when the game just came out today?

UBISOFT is gonna have to settle for GRAW for hot March sales. Shame.

Don't forget about Farcry due out early next week. :D

Demo didn't click with me either.

It wasn't bad. Not 60 dollars good though.

I've wondered that same thing before about a new game.

The only answer I can come up with is that some people live in mom and dads basement and play games 24/7. They get a game the moment it is available and they live on that game for days at a time becoming a ninja in that particular game.

I hope this is good, Crimson Skies was one of the first Live games that got a lot of good play out me and others online. Dogfighting on Live would be great again.
i was a huge crimson skies fan, and this game is the closest thing to it yet... and the graphics are pretty neat in an artistic way. if you like CS though, this is money. i love this game. i don't get the hate, but to each his own. but once kobold said he hated crimson skies, i knew right then that he and i are polar opposites. because CS was my "greatest game on xbox" for a very very loooong time. it was just fucking amazing in every way for me, and i would kill for another. granted, Blazing Angels isn't quite at CS levels, but it's pretty close, or at least, the closest thing to it so far. a damn fun game that i will enjoy immensely.

I played through the demo, and going in with low expectations I was pretty surprised. I think it plays pretty well, I enjoyed the levels in the demo. It's not earth-shattering but I could see myself playing through it. I'm actually more interested in it after the demo, but still not sure about buying it for 60 dollars. Damn about the screen tearing though, it's the worst I've seen in any 360 game.

Kobold,

I'm curious to hear your opinion. Which game is better, the Outfit or Blazing Angels?
Well I don't know, I'm not a fan of The Outfit myself ( I did finish it in SP...), but I found it enjoyable and it sure does offer a whole lot more gameplay then Blazing Angels.

I would argue Blazing Angels gets my preference since I dig these kinds of games so much (I adored Secret Weapons over Normandie, Crimson Skies), but I have no trouble saying that The Outfit is easily the 'better' game overall in quality, production values and content.

Actually if you like these flying games, get Secret Weapons over Normandy for your Xbox. That game just rocks. No achievements, no nice graphics, no Live, but a kick ass game for sure (made by the people that made X-Wing/Tie Fighter series). Blazing Angels is a blatant copy of that game, but fundementally flawed due to Ubi underfunding it. (Almost no marketing either for Blazing I think)

EDIT:

Huh......where did I say that? I absolutely do not remember that since I loved the game. I was the one to reveal that it had Live support and I wrote the first hands-on preview on that game. I still love it!

Nay. (Which I don't mind at all...)

I played only 2 arcade missions to get the achievement, but my 360 was on all day. :) (I sent out my Morrowind to reviewer, so I have to wait for my own Special Edition or I would have been playing that).

Plus I don't hate it, I will definatly finish the arcade missions too because there is nothing out there at the moment, I'm just dissapointed by it since it's a far cry from what it easily could and should have been.

EDIT: don't forget I've only been actually 'playing' for under 10 hours lol.

Hmm. Based upon what I've played so far, I may have to recant my enthusiastic embracing of this game. I dunno. I'll give it some proper time this weekend before I lay down final judgement. But you can see where the promise of Kamikaze runs blinded me to other flaws, right?

Haha, It's OK to like it though. :) Reviews and impressions are only that. Pff, some people actually liked True Crime and the sequel to that. There's no accounting for tastes.

EDIT: Not ment to sound like a burn to you, just general observation on the relativity of it all. Haha! Sorry.,. :)

It is a shame that the controls are so super wrong.

it does not fly like a plane should.

the right stick should be throttle power and rear rudder ONLY
left stick should be airlons and tail .

they messed that up so the plane does not fly how it should in real life .

so flying as if it was a nitro powered RC plane is out of the question. it limits your ability to control the beast and that SUCKS!

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I already had this game pre-ordered and paid in full. So, I picked it up on my way home from work today. Now it's sitting here unopened. :/

I'm not sure what to do GAF. I loved Crimson Skies so much, and for me this seems like the closest i'm gonna get to that in high def right now. So, thats the big appeal to me. The online play sounds really impressive though. It seems like the reviews aren't playing this up enough, but this game has co-op missions that you can play with 3 other people! That sounds awesome to me. I sure hope some of you pick this game up for the online play alone. It sounds to me like it's the real draw for the game.

I think i'm gonna open it right now. :p

If you wanna play a co-op flight game, then what are you waiting for? Play it already! :)

Again, it's not bad. I just wished (and see it could be with some extra effort) it had been a lot better.

you could always rent it first but the fact that you actually took it home instead of putting the credit on something else tells me you are gonna open the game eventually:(

So anyone got the game?

Can you change the controls?

Has anyone put any time into the multiplayer/co-op portions of the game? This is what I'm most curious about. Still haven't opened my copy yet.
