First episode just went up on Hulu. Disney+ if you're outside the US. New episode drops every Monday.

Please be considerate and mark manga spoilers. Some folks are seeing this story for the first time :)

Bleach got boring for me after it went the usual shounen route of turning from an interesting anime/manga with interesting characters and world, straight into a neverending fighting tournament where people inexplicably decide to pair off and see who's strongest for 3-4 seasons. I enjoyed it with DBZ, but I don't need it to happen every time.

Did it ever make it past this and are they fighting a greater evil yet? What's the new season about?

1 v 1 fights are still the primary form of storytelling so you probably won't like this season. This has got more fights than any other season.

Anyways this arc is about the Quincy, once thought to be near extinct, invading Soul Society to finally kill all the Soul Reapers.

It would have been a great touch if the new shinigami felt a massive captain-level energy pressure as soon as they entered Ichigo's home town. I guess I just want more scenes of people being in awe of his power or respecting him like a captain since he is that powerful.

In a lot of these shonen shows it feels like no one is ever in awe at the protagonist when they've made it to a level beyond what many are capable of. For example Goku is still treated like a fool by everyone even though it was clear he was easily toying with certain villains in DB Super(Goku Black 1st edition, Frost, Golden Frieza, etc).

Sub_Level and others may disagree but Bleach got trash after Soul Society, reusing story beats and a lot of whack moments with dragged pacing... But once the anime ended and Kubo was told to wrap it up due to losing its place in the big 3 for Toriko he just went the fuck IN with this arc. I'd just advise reading a synopsis then jumping in.

Quincy an established enemy from the infancy of the manga comes back for a final battle against Soul Society. I havent read it but got detailed by a friend (Again Sub_Level and others can call me out) but this has some of the best character designs, fights and overall moments in the series. A lot of characters fucking die or take Ls. Even popular characters like Hitsugaya and Byakuya get FUCKED UP.

What...

Kubo actually hated working on Bleach and wanted to stop after the Soul Society arc, was on the record saying he was threatened by Jump and his editor multiple times to keep continuing the manga. Telling him things like they will make sure he doesn't work in the industry again if he didn't keep writing. And he did tried wrapping up Bleach story with the end of Aizen, but was told no and to keep working, and was told he had to keep writing when he wanted to move onto other projects. By time we reached the 1000 Year Blood War story he just didn't care about the IP anymore and was intentionally killing off characters left and right self sabotaging his manga, the art he was turning in was half assed or relatively plain and incomplete, no where near the same level of quality it was before, and Kubo was essentially just depressed and dead inside.

He went on to apologize to fans not too long ago before this anime was being worked on that they didn't deserve the ending they received, but he was very clear throughout the whole early 2010's that he was in a very bad place. Shonen Jump just wanting to keep earning money because of Bleach's worldwide success and capitalizing on it. And Kubo was burnt out and was only treated with threat after threat after threat with Shonen Jump trying to keep him working. His editor eventually apologized and supposedly Shonen Jump within the 4 years after Bleach finished.

But don't give any credit or belief that the 1000 year blood war was anything of deep quality, the biggest thing he had to do for this anime was tell everyone there will be changes and he was working to make this anime adaption a better version and something fans who followed Bleach manga deserved. To say the end of Bleach was anything but awful, is a understatement, it was a disaster from the manga chapters itself and the work behind it.

I said call me out but post citations for him wanting to stop after Soul Society. I know he had a negative history with Jump (Despite going back to them now with Burn the Witch) but didn't think it was that bad.

Also I literally saw in an interview with Kubo recently he said when the anime for Bleach ended that meant he could do what he wanted in Thousand Year Blood War arc without worrying about toning down the series or censorship.

Unless this is PR spin. I'd say he was more depressed making Arrancar arc and Huneco Mundo. Cuz that shit was TRASH.

I say its a PR spin and that he was genuinely happy the show ended so he had pressure off of him, the series was heavily censored and the show ending meant he had more freedom in general, which is something he really wanted. All he really did in the 1000 year blood war arc was just finish doing things with his characters he wanted to show off their full potential/powers and wrap up the story with the quinces to bring the story full circle. While also killing characters out of smite and trying to make sure he wrote himself in a back corner so he couldn't be convinced to continue the manga after the fact. It wasn't to be cool or to add stakes, it was his way of telling his editor and higher ups he was done.

Kubo always been the manga artist/writer to come up with cool characters and just wanting to show them off doing cool things. That was the entire reason he did the Fullbringer arc in general, was having these ideas of characters that weren't Bleach-related originally then saw a opportunity to put these characters in his manga and shoehorned them in. He isn't one to really think of long winged plots, not because he doesn't like doing them, but he gets bored real fast and wants to move on to the next character he has on his brain. He's more of a manga creator to do much shorter stories so he can move on to the next idea eating at his brain. And you can see how that kind of mind lead to, well.. The hundreds of characters in Bleach and how everyone wanted to see more of all the captains/vice captains, the lieutenants and so on.

Im in for the full nostalgia porn but Ichigo going full bankai on some average ass hollow had me flacid as shit. Beautiful animation though….

anyone have the /a/ list for which episodes to watch and which fillers to skip or watch?

Man, don't listen to /a/ about anything lol just follow this guide

Filler episodes everyone likes:

33 (soccer!)
50 (Don Kanonji!)
228 (boobs!)
230-255 (beautifully animated Zanpaktou Rebellion arc. It goes on a bit longer than this but 255 is the real climax of the story)

Mixed episodes you'll wanna skip:

109 (just has one canon scene at the end, you can skip)
295 (glorified recap episode)

Some of the other eps in the mixed category are also skippable recaps, but you'll know pretty quickly when one is happening. The biggest chunk you'll be skipping is 64-109. There will be some new comic relief characters afterwards & reference to events that happen but they all ultimately mean jack.

Prolly the only cool af anime that I dropped due to garbage fillers and just getting more meh over time. Maybe one day I will return to it and the new season but I doubt it.

I implore everyone to watch the Zanpaktou Rebellion arc. It's filler, but its enjoyable filler.

I watched the entire series, left the Manga alone mostly, and was gutted when the original run of episodes finished. It's nostalgic as hell having this back every week, even if the original Manga final Arc that is based on was rather rushed. Instantly transported me ten years in the past.

The CGI was a little iffy for the Hollows, but I'll let it slide. I just hope it's not a sign of things to come. Everything else was top quality and the pace was surprisingly fast. So much stuff happening in one episode.

they really need to drop some fights (or change them up) and change the ending of this arc.

Maybe we'll actually get to see Ichigos new powers with his new swords this time around. what a fucking let down that whole build-up was for.

Since i'm saving myself for when the whole thing is gonna be complete before start watching it, i have a couple of questions:

Is the japanese VA the same of the old anime?

Is there any track from the previous ost or it's everything new?

The Japanese VA is the same, yes. The English VA will be mostly the same as well it appears.

The soundtrack is new but old music is incorporated. For example Ichigo’s theme Number 1 has a new version in the first episode.

Imagine how i feel waiting for the whole thing to be complete before starting watching it.

Bleach deserve a one day binge.

You know that the whole thing won't end until at least mid 2024, right?

If you do, I applaud your patience.

The show will be split in 4 parts, each part having 12-13 episodes.
There will be breaks between each parts.

Well shit i thought it was a small project...

I'm gonna wait until the first season end then, no way i can wait 2 years.

What a great incentive to rewatch the whole show.

I recently rewatched the English dub and skipped all the filler :)

Substitute Shinigami: Better than I remember, even with the mediocre animation.
Soul Society: As good as I remember but doesn’t become truly great until the last ~10 episodes. Fights are paced very well and don’t last more than a couple episodes.
Arrancar: Better than I remember, great pacing.
Hueco Mundo: As bad as I remember, horrible pacing. The show starts using way too many flashbacks and reuses ost tracks too often.
Winter War: Worse than I remember, multiple time-wasting pointless fights. Has a couple good battles.
Fullbringer: Pretty mixed on this one, but the third act is brilliant with great fights across the board.

Started today (only 1 episode, im gonna take a looong time. I'm also skipping fillers, but jap dub instead), there's something strangely comfy about this show. Your opinion of the arcs is not that different from my original perception. Huenco was super trash, horribly paced.

I find it very interesting that, so far, the Quincy are not following the traditional rules of shonen anime, especially at the end scene.

1) They're refusing to tell their enemies what their attacks fully do.
2) They aren't waiting for their enemies to power up and show attacks.
3) They were immediately powered up and ready when the battle with Soul Society started.
4) Because of number 3, they instantly killed two Soul Society members upon entry, both of whom should have been more prepared and better positioned.

So far, the only shonen trope they're still somewhat falling prey to is overt cockiness. Otherwise they remind me a lot of Future Trunks from DBZ who also broke traditional shonen rules.

It reminds me of this popular YouTube skit:

Ichigo’s bankai hilt is a swastika, meant to represent the original Buddhist origins not the Nazi symbolism.

But yes the Sternritters are German themed, like how Espada/Hueco Mundo took inspiration from Iberia/Latin America in their music & naming conventions.

The English dub is up on Hulu now by the way. It was pretty damn good and a good excuse to watch the ep a second time! Only lagging behind Jap by 3 weeks which isn’t bad at all.
