Overwatch fans disappointed with Ashe should know that six new heroes are in the works, Blizzard has told Kotaku, and that fans hoping for more diversity in the popular game's cast of characters will hopefully find what they're looking for in upcoming updates.

"I think if you look at the history of Overwatch, there's been such a wide variety of people that we've represented in the game," game director Jeff Kaplan told Kotaku at BlizzCon last weekend. "We have no shortage of heroes that we're currently working on secretly back in Irvine. Right now I think the number's around six that we have in development. I don't think people are gonna be disappointed."

"I think there's... I don't want to say something for everyone, because six is not something for everyone," Kaplan said. "There's a lot more people who walk Planet Earth than that. But I don't think people will be disappointed. We have a lot of really cool, interesting characters that are gonna come out over the next few years."

Not that I care, but that wasn't an explanation of anything.

I know of zero Overwatch fans that are disappointed that a non-black woman was added.

We have chinese, japanese, korean, australian, russian, american, robots, egyptians, germans, indians, hispanics, scottish/irish, french, nigerian, and a fuckin' gorilla and hamster. Also Orisa was made by a fuckin' Efi Oladele, a 11-year old black girl.

Fuck right on off, Kotaku.

Who's the Nigerian?

People complaining that their specific demographic isnt being catered to.

There are several black characters in OW but none are female.

So, if Blizzard introduces a black female character then people will just complain that there isnt a Hispanic male character, a gay male character(people have been complaining about this for a while), or a female animal character.

I saw a bunch of bitching on Twitter that "another white chick" was added. OW is already one of the most inclusive games out there. Give it time and quit your bitching. JFC.

I'm still mad there is no Yaghan people on overwatch, come on! Where is the representation, I'm so triggered. /s

not every game must have every fucking race ever. Its a videogame, not a race collectathon

Is it actually black females complaining? Didn't click the link but I'd bet this is a white SJW trying to win some virtue signaling points.

Of course they got the white lesbian in before any black women. The oversight is really starting to look conspicuous.

We live in the strangest timeline, where half the populace is nuts, Trump became president and formed the Space Force, and it's the berenstain bears.

Why is white shaming so popular in today's journalism?

Neo-Marxist classes disguised as social studies courses, virtue signaling false altruism, and it generates outrage and clicks since they know the majority of readership is probably the white male?

No one said they "should".

It is a very diverse game though. I can understand someone disappointed if they don't have a rep, with such cool designs.

Eagerly waiting on EviLore EviLore 's write-up on this game's design and the psychology behind it.

Of all the games to complain about in terms of diversity...
OW already has a pretty diverse lineup.

They need to include less mammals though. Next time they do an animal give me a reptile, bird, fish or insect please.

It's just the usual tumblr crowd crying that she's white and that McRree is straight.

And not bring us entertainment and el oh el's?

The OP's could at least link to a archive.is. ;)

Sometimes archive links are appropriate to include alongside source attributions, such as when deviant editing practices are going on or the source article has been pulled. However, we try to maintain some ethical standards at NeoGAF, whether dumpster fires elsewhere bother with such standards or not. If an article is worth posting and discussing, it should be attributed properly. People can make their own decisions from there, e.g. appropriate browser extensions, or refraining from clicking in and sticking to a fair-use summary. if they feel circumstances warrant a boycott of ad revenues elsewhere, but that's a personal decision and between you and the website in question.

I was pretty surprised when I found out there was a Swedish character named Torbjörn in this game. Always fun to see Sweden represented.

They haven't got my demographic - middle-aged under-paid twat with no real friends and a crap haircut (a real crap haircut, not a cool crap haircut).

I'm pissed that there isn't a single 1/2 African American, 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 Native American transgender handicapped character in THE WHOLE DAMN GAME!!

Do people even still play Overwatch?, i could only find 1 stream on Mixer lol.
As for this 'problem', i dont give a shit what colour character i play in games, i dont understand why some people do.:messenger_winking:

Well there a lot of black women with Afros so I don't think that would be a problem.

Agreed.

I'd bet $100 that the people most vocal about there not being a black female hero, will complain about it being done "wrong" when they do release a black female hero.

The only way I see people not complaining is if the character designer is a black woman as well, otherwise Blizzard will be accused of something by the vocal community.

This is really a bummer for them (of their own making, I'd suggest):

Jeff Kaplan told Kotaku at BlizzCon that Ashe as we now know her was born of timing and sudden inspiration, which played a role in her appearance. Originally, she was just a supporting character in "Reunion," the new cinematic revealed during BlizzCon. It was conceived as a "McCree piece," but the Overwatch team saw an early, pre-animation version of the video created by the cinematics team and were taken by Ashe's look and personality—and also B.O.B. They decided that Ashe would be the next hero.

The team just came up with a cool character design and got excited about it, but they forgot they were being woke.
