Blizzard is changing McCree's name in Overwatch

I'm not sure why some of y'all are ragging against this move. It's the right move. The guy's been kicked out, had a history of problematic behavior, and Blizzard/OW foolishly named a fictional character exactly after his real life "counterpart" (they have a history of doing this like in WoW). It's awkward because OW has been around for years, so the transition to a new name is gonna be odd, but it has to be done. OW2 is coming eventually and it's time to change it.

What's extremely cringe is putting your name on a main character who's a studly cowboy that wears a belt with BAMF on it.
Because it's fucking retarded, not even 1% of the player base will want this, they are rebranding a character to please people inside the company. Mcree is his own character at this point, only Blizzard employees see him as something else. That kind of decision making is doomed to failure, and they don't exactly have any goodwill capitol to spend at this point.

You only need to read the first sentence of this message to know the rest of the message, the reasoning and the move itself are complete BS.

No it's not the 'right move'.

It's a batshit insane conflation of a digital character with a human adult male, manifest in flesh.

The inability to separate product with employees is a symbol of a retarded culture (and I mean that in the medical sense) that treats trivial things seriously and serious things trivially.
Why is it?, its just more cowering down to the Twitter mob.
99% of players wont even undertsand the reference, and most of the other 1% that do wont even care.

Edit. Someone else said basically the same thing at the same time. Great minds.
How do you separate a product with an employee / how do you find it batshit to conflate a digital character with a human when it was literally created in part by said human with the exact same name??

If THE Jeffrey Epstein worked at Blizzard and named a character after himself and then the whole pedo fallout happens you really think it would be no biggie to leave his namesake in the game? Even if """99.9""" of gamers wouldn't know about it?
It's a waste of time and resources for something 99.9 percent of gamers know nothing about.
I can hardly imagine the time and resources are that problematic. It's essentially a string replacement.

Not even the twitter mob cares about this, this is an announcement that could not have been more unnecessary

Yes.

They should change his name to 'Mad Dog'. Think about it.

I could imagine a lot of younger gamers getting stumped by that one.

You're trying to use an extreme example to make your point, these two things are not possible together. Here in reality the Overwatch character is far more famous than the dumbfuck he was named after.

I'm using an extreme example to point out the flaw in logic that simply because its a fictional, digital character means it should remain in tact.

The real life employee was a named sexual predator in the lawsuit and has a history of problematic behavior. If someone on my team who I worked with for years named a character after themselves (like a moron), and then all that stuff came to light and they were removed from the project I wouldn't want their association within the game either. It doesn't take a whole lot of empathy and emotional intelligence to understand that point of view. Obviously there's a big financial/business perspective Activision-Blizzard is taking with their approach here, too.

but it's just easy to hurr durr at the "woke twitter mob" and blue haired feminists or whatever.

All part of the plan. Out in the open make change like this and the WoW spit emote. In secret burn all the documents and discredit people.

It had absolutely nothing to do with capitalizing on current trends for twitter points and profits. Also, there was no way anyone knew what the employee was really like when they created and named the character after him. Good guy Blizzard at it again.

The guy was responsible for a lot of decisions/ideas in the game, wasn't him?

Changing the name means nothing at all, ppl will still play "his" game...

Delete the game instead! xD

Dude, if this was resetera, I wouldn't be able to make a joke and actually be banned for this reply >_<

Right on the brink of collapse Blizzard saves the world yet again. Stunning and brave, true heroes. We should all give them our support by buying a mobile phone to play their games on.

Or you know. Actually take a stand and retire the character like they always said they would one day.

They didn't say they would retire McCree and/or other characters, but that it was a possibility in general.

They are delaying a dlc over it.

Of course, what better reason to start with the sexual harrasser personified as a cowboy in your game. Anything less is pandering and empty gesture. Distraction if you will. Especially after the shredding evidence allegation. 😂

"we believe its necessary to change the name of the hero currently known as McCree to something that better represents what overwatch stands for"

So they are gonna change the name to Fuck Hong Kong?

Its dumb but what can you do. Diablo 2 will sell like hotcakes. CoD is going to continue being a sales juggernaut. As the stock goes lower more people will buy because they know it will go back up. The average employees will attend sensitivity training to tell them not to grab their coworker's titties. The higher ups with the money & influence who actually can mess around with female employees will not have to do much of anything except for the 1 or 2 who get thrown under the bus.

I need more bag slots to carry all this concern you guys have. Shitheads dont deserve to be rewarded, even by something dumb like a name. Even if its a hobby you like. If there are no demonstrable consequences, nothing changes. You can say "Go woke, get broke" from your shitty apartment all you want, but I'll suck a thousand dicks to be a Proctor Gamble, Nike, or Activision exec right now.

Man you must really have loved that name!
It's not about having loved that one. It's just that if they are willing to literally rewrite the games story and re record so much voice lines and even push back a event arc just because the character was named after a guy but as a ingame character had literally nothing to do with him, then I'm just not interested in playing that game for the story. Overwatch used to be a good competitive game, nowadays it's nothing like what it used to be so I already stopped playing it for competitives sake. So if they change the story now, who knows what they'll change next if enough people start crying about some tiny similarities and since OW2s focus is more on PvE and story, I'm plain and simple not interested in it. It will still be a fun game i bet and have a very active community, it's just not one that I want to be part of where people have to cry loud enough to get what they want.

95% of the audience OW didn't know the employee McCree
95% of the result on Google Images is Jesse McCree in Overwatch.

Let the 5% people crying to cancel culture...

Wait, they are integrating the change into this whole story arc thing they had planned for mcree?

Somehow they got even gayer than when they outed the old, withered FPS vet character as gay.

Regardless of how you feel about Blizzard, the fired employee, or Overwatch, one thing is clear: the people running the ship at Blizzard have completely embraced the current cultural madness, or are so desperate and afraid to lose their jobs that there's no discernible difference in their behavior anyway. Either way, that statement reads like it's coming from a POW with a gun to his head.

The swing back the other way on this stuff is going to take a lot of people by surprise. Middle class largesse writ large is unsustainable, and people writing things like this will become casualties. I wonder what they will fall back on?

Diablo 2 is riding the ability of old blizzard and will sell less than diablo 3 did, cod is irrelevant. The fate of blizzard is going to be with their ability to revitilize wow and sucess of diablo 4.
