Sams still confident of winter ship date for Burning Crusade

Blizzard COO Paul Sams has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company plans to release a new expansion pack for multi-million selling MMO World of Warcraft every year.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Sams said, "Starting with The Burning Crusade, every year thereafter we plan on bringing out a new expansion set - so every 12 months."

The Burning Crusade is the first expansion pack to be released for WOW. According to Sams, details of the beta will be announced in the near future. As for the release date - "We're still quoting very confidently winter and we will be more specific on the timeframe quite soon."

Although the code on the show floor in Leipzig this week has already been shown once, at E3, German consumers don't seem to mind - with Blizzard's booth almost impossible to navigate on the first public day of exhibition.

Visit GamesIndustry.biz tomorrow to read the full interview with Paul Sams and find out which next-gen machine he prefers, and what his thoughts are with regard to bringing WOW to consoles.

considering they have job posting for level designers with expereince in RTS's, I think its safe to assume they are working on something OTHER than WoW, so chill peeps =)

So Blizzard's ritual of releasing one AWESOME expansion to every game has come to an end.
I can't imagine anyone honestly believing they were only going to release one expansion for an MMO.

I know they still have to show us what Arthas is doing in Northrend. I knew it was coming. Didn't Blizzard say they plan on having WoW last until 2008. So I guess that means 3 expansion packs total.

Wow with this, the new 25-player raid cap, the pvp changes, ALL my complaints about WoW have been addressed. God damn Blizz get out of my head!

I would like to see Burning Crusade and then 3 more.
Raise the level cap by 10 every expansion ending with level 100 and Arthas and then continue in either Warcraft 4 or WoW 2.

Yeah, tell me about it. Which has me worried. Course, some new instances that aren't for 60+ would be great, give people a reason to make alts again.

Maybe early 2007 for me. Maybe
A friend of mine that quit a couple weeks ago because lag made Naxx unplayable and said he would not return until BC resubscribed yesterday. He made it a whole 2 weeks without WoW.

One year for an expansion pack is a pretty good pace even for traditional single-player games that just receive 1 of them, let alone a MMORPG.

EQ will have put out 12 expansions in 7 years.

I do believe there are new low level instances.

What? I'll only be happy if they make a World of Warcraft: Starcraft expansion. I want a level 40 bald space marine.

That'll probably happen :/. Looks like World of Starcraft will be coming with FPS+RTS functions.

Actually, they said 6-8 years, at least, in an interview today, so that's 2010-2012 for a current projected lifespan. I think it is safe to say they will continue to produce new expansions until people stop buying them, in other words somewhere between 25 years from now and never. They can easily upgrade the graphics every few expansions and keep printing money ad infinitum.

I don't think anyone can deny that Everquest II was a horrible error on Sony's part. Kinda hard to imagine Blizzard making the same mistake. If we get another MMO from them it'll be from another franchise (gee I wonder which one) and WOW will keep right on going.

Incidentally, they also said to expect 'faster expansions but fewer heavy content patches' going forward from here...which, personally, I'm fine with. Half the time in the content patches, they didn't seem to know what the hell they were doing or what the majority of their player base really needed (NOT a fourth raid dungeon when most people are still trying to get through the first two).

Aye World of Warcraft will likely live a lot longer than 8 years. UO just hit 8 years and it's getting a graphics engine update. Considering WoW's size, I'm sure there will be a ton of folks willing to stick around forever as long as they keep offering new gameplay, features, and updated graphics.

I'm happy about this as I'd like to see yearly updates to the game. I'm quite confident that you can still play the game without the expansion, so you're not forced to buy it. :)

The expansion after this one needs to be really focused on the 0 to 60 game. This is the area of the game I like the most, and I could personally give a flip about huge raid content. It's just not my style of play.

Oh, I think they're going to force you. You can't go past level 60 without the expansion and of course the new content will focus on those who do, since it's a constant struggle to keep people entertained at that level. Of course you can keep playing the game that exists as it is today, along with the occassional meager handout, but you're going to want to get the expansion. You'd be nuts not to.

I think, as far as future expansions are concerned, you'll see the occassional new class and new starting areas whenever they introduce a new race...and of course the 60-70 experience (along with anything beyond 70 in future expansions) will more closely resemble the 1-59 game than the 60 game. Aside from all that I don't know what you could possibly expect; the 1-59 game is already wonderfully well fleshed out, and they're adding two new 1-20 areas in the expansion, as well as whatever new 1-20 and 1-30 areas you get when they introduce more new races in the future. Seriously, sorry man, but they'd be nuts to ever focus on the 1-60 game again aside from new starting areas for new races.

Man, BC needs to come out sooner than "Winter" :(

Cheer up, looks like Thanksgiving is a real possibility! If the leaks floating around today are to be believed, they're planning on a 6-week alpha (which started earlier this week)...probably 4-6 weeks of beta after that, so November seems within reach. December at the latest.
