Blu-ray 2.0 profile in new PS3 update

:D PC world claims that the new firmware update will come with Blu-ray to PSP transfer:

The firmware also exposes "Portable Copy," which enables PS3 users to copy a standard-definition version of the Blu-ray movie to a PlayStation Portable (PSP). You can transfer music and photo playlists from the PS3 to the PSP and use the PSP as a remote control for music playback using "Remote Play." DivX and WMV playback functionality has been improved, along with new Internet browser settings and additional AV settings.

It only works with titles that already have the portable copy on the BR disc. That article implies that it will work with every movie, which is false.

true but i'm still amazed by the number of errors surrounding gaming news by non-gaming press. These are professional journalists ffs.

BR drives are pretty slow for their capacity though. It would take a lot of time for a whole movie to be read out, since the movies are 20-30GB files.
 
There was a debate as to how it would be done, I think the consesus would be that there would be a PSP res copy of the movie on the disc as opposed to recoding the movie content

Hey, if they want to increase the convenience factor by including the PSP format copy premade, that's fine, but the absence of such shouldn't preclude the possibility of getting one at all. Nothing stopping them from setting it up like F@H, to run until done and then shutdown.
 
Sony enhances Blu-ray offerings

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is targeting April 8 as the date it will release its first batch of Blu-ray Disc titles that can be connected to the Internet for more bonus materials and features.

The musical spoof "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" and the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi thriller "The 6th Day" will be the studio's first two BD-Live titles. Their release coincides with the launch of a new software update for Sony's PlayStation 3 that makes the game console the first Blu-ray player with Internet connectivity, an ability known as "Profile 2.0."

They really haven't announced these that far in advance. We could see it tonight but I'd say this Wednesday would be the latest.

I read somewhere that you can play mini FPS game (Classics Doom style) from one of Alien vs Predator movie and play against online. It sounds far beyond than DVD's feature

Do they normally release firmware updates before the store updates on Thursday? I realize that is subjective because it's always before "a Thursday."

Usually, Wednesday nights at 11PM EST.

When they showed it at CES they were talking about ~1GB versions on the disc in the portable format. That's pretty high for a PSP-quality vid (you can get a DVD rip encoded with H.264 in excellent quality well under 500MB most of the time) but I'd guess that the PSP won't be the only portable device supported eventually, and they're thinking of things with higher res screens like the iPhone as well. Look at how some Fox BDs are coming with a DVD with the movie ready-converted to be imported into iTunes.

I do wish the media would do their research on this stuff, though. I've seen a few gaming sites reporting it as 2.20 allowing you to rip your BDs to the PSP, when we went through all this clarification during CES after they were making the same mistake then.

Besides the copyright issues of effectively turning the PS3 into an official Blu-ray ripper (what copy protection?), even the PS3 isn't going to be able to rip a 30-40GB movie and convert it in a reasonable time frame. Real-time conversion is the best you could hope for and I wouldn't expect much above YouTube quality at that speed.

Heck, dont even expect a home announcement at E3, altho its HIGHLY likely.
