Blu-ray sales surge as player prices drop

I know this is on the verge of nitpicking, but I absolutely hate it when I walk into Best Buy or Futureshop and they paired up a Blu-Ray player with a horrible LCD HDTV. "Oooooh Casino Roy.... AAARGH The horrible screen quality!!"

I've got all HDTV's in my house but I still don't really purchase many Blu-Ray's. While they do look nicer, they also cost more money and play in less devices in my house (I only have one BR player - a PS3). I'll hop on the blu-ray bandwagon once disc prices start dropping and players become more standard.

Oh yeah and go blu! Teddman and his DD movie dreams am cry. :P
DD ain't going away. NetFlix, Hulu, iTunes, OnDemand, and on and on. These things ain't going away. But why must we look as DD and physical media in antagonistic terms. I love DD, but I also like the higher fidelity that Bluray affords. I would not like the end of all physical media, though. There will always be a market for physical media.

Okay, whatever.

It's better than DVD, but I'm not sure why we root for a minor improvement like it's some major step. Give me an IMAX quality recording at home if you want to really impress me! Short of that, some form of digital distribution (solid copy + would also work... ie no DRM!) would be ideal.

Framerate up, transition away from disc based medium (flash?) -- these are the things that would impress me.

upping the framerate when actual film is still working at 24 fps is a bad, bad idea. see: motionflow BS on 120 Hz TVs. makes movies look like crap.

personally, I don't think BD is a minor improvement. I think it makes a big difference on any set over 40".

Going to IMAX type resolution is a waste on home-sized screens. 1080p can last a hell of a long time and looks great even on bigass projector setups.

I am perfectly happy with BD lasting a long while.

I was stunned how cheap the drives are now as well. For ÂŁ45 I got a 5x BD reader with dual layer DVD writer.

Yep. The prices are really pretty damn low, at least for the non-slimline ones.

Since this thread is filled with PS3 fanboy Blu-ray watching geeks, i have a question:P

If i go out and buy a Blu-ray movie here in Sweden, can i then see on the cover if i will be able to watch it on my American MGS 80 gig PS3?

Take a looksie http://bluray.liesinc.net/ or http://regionfreemovies.com/ etc

It might not always have THE cheapest prices, but I generally think I get good deals @ http://www.blu-rayboxsets.com/index.php

Oh nice, thanks!

Seriously, some of the prices around are pretty tasty these days. Once ÂŁ10 Blu-rays become more common place, I'll be snapping them up left and right. After watching Blu-ray, it actually pains me to go back to regular DVD. Especially after witnessing some of the newer releases. I was lucky enough to have a copy of both Dark Knight of Blu-ray and DVD. And when I compared them, I was pretty shocked at the difference, even with the PS3's brilliant DVD up-scaling.

IMAX quality? That doesn't even make sense. You can't see the extra resolution unless the screen is large enough. How would that really be beneficial at home? With a front projector, I could see higher res working, but it wouldn't need to be that high :p

BTW - Have you ever watched a BD versus DVD on a large screen 80", 100", 120"? The difference is FAR more than minor. Even at lower sized screens, it more than minor. This isn't even mentioning the audio.

Framerate up? I think you need to talk to the movie studios about that, as BluRay has nothing to do with it. They could easily do 1080p60 if there was source material.

As for transitioning away to disc based media? BD50's cost what, a dollar? Call me when 50 GB ROM's cost that much. And you want higher resolution? Maybe you should wait for 75 GB ROM's :p There's a reason they use optical discs.

So the numbers mean the gap between DVD and Bluray is actually still increasing massively?

Hmmm.

I guess Ill be able to buy new DVD releases well into the next decade.

And no shit at lower prices = higher sales. Although to be fair, its something SOny hasnt seemed to grasp yet.

BTW: ANyone know how many SACD players were sold LTD? Just curious if its in the same ballpark or not.

Wait, I didn't look closely, but I thought DVD numbers where down from last year? BD on the other hand, is significantly up.

Good question, I'm not sure. All I know is that BD has surpassed LaserDisc (and is trending upwards pretty quickly), and that was around for how long?

I can't tell the difference!

Digital Distribution! Digital Distribution! Digital Distribution!

None of which matter!

who the hell said that?

I guess we better shut down ILM then. And yes Onix, the A/B blind test is how they were testing things and it wasn't as obvious as you might think. ;P

Maybe their vision was destroyed by all the lens flare they put in Star Trek...

I never understand the argument for digital distribution. If I pay for a movie, I'd like to get a disc, a box and a nice cover art to go with it, thank you very much. Ditto with games (unless they're small in size no bigger than 1GB). Plus, I don't know where you live but here in Australia, bandwidth are still capped. 25GB/month costs me as much as $60 and downloading 1GB worth of file takes at least an hour or more.

Unfortunately not. Even though most Blu-ray discs, except Disney and Fox, are region free, they always put the specific region on the box art. But I saw that someone gave you some links to sites where they list region free stuff.

To be honest, I can't really tell much of a difference with older films. I know film is meant to have a lot more detail, but it really doesn't matter when it was filmed slightly out of focus and blurrier than you get with modern movies.

Detail as in grain/noise? Upscalers generally eliminate them anyway.

How are the shipping prices from that site? Because some of those prices are incredible.
Checkout and S&H is done through Amazon, I'm in the U.S. and it's usually $2.98 per title.
