I just got home from playing Prophecy -- a Taslisman-style board game with Euro improvements. Pretty fun.

Check out some pics from the last board fest me and my friends had. It was a three-to-four day orgy of game playing. Another one is coming up in Feb.

Games played:
Boggle, St. Petersburg, Yspahan, Talisman, Space Dealer, Antiquity, Modern Art, Shogun, 1960, Colosseum, Tigris & Euphrates, Thebes, Go, Age of Empires III, Factory Fun, Last Night on Earth, El Grande, Crokinole and Fiese Freunde Fette Feten.

Another recommendation for people who like deep strategy games: Age Of Steam. Purchase track, get paid for moving goods over your track, reinvest money on more track, etc. Sounds simple, but you really need to plan ahead properly to do well.

So my roommate recently bought Settlers of Catan. I had played the demo on XBLA but playing this in person with 3 other people...awesome. Of course, it's a miracle that this even occured, the roommate that bought is a complete jock moron when it comes to anything above the intelligence level of sports or action movies. Now it makes me wish I had more nerdy friends who would have games like this that we could congregate around for hours. Drinking and partying is awesome but I had fun tonight just sitting at a table strategizing with dice :lol.

Can someone explain to me how to play Risk? I bought the board game about a year ago, and I had a HELL of a time trying to figure out how to get started. I looked online for instructions, and when I found em', I was still dumbfounded.

I remember playing a board game called Endangered Species. It was pretty much a Monopoly clone, but instead of properties you by a species and instead of houses you buy up to two....thingies....where if someone lands on your species you get more money from them.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Also Shogi (Japanese Chess)

Cribbage is kind of a board game, right? My dad and I used to play cribbage all the time

Recently a friend of mine got Twilight Imperium. We've been playing a lot and is really good; the game is really deep, complex and rich, very strategic and highly entertaining.
On the downside, one game can spawn through several days easily.

There's spaceship fights, planetary invasions, technology research, industrial production, commerce, laws that can be voted in a galactic congress a la star wars, diplomatic treaties, different races with their backgrounds and abilities... etc. It's really great, I suggest everyone to try it on if you have the chance.

I played that a few months ago with some buddies. I enjoyed it a fair bit.

Just picked this up the other night. Players cooperate against ancient Lovecraftian horrors. So many cards and tokens!

I am a BGG'er. I have always wanted to try this one. I am a dungeon-crawl fan, however. how complex is it?

I do own Descent, but only played it once. my friends and I stick mostly to Warhammer Quest and Runebound.

The basic game is pretty straightforward. Takes a little while to get used to the exact sequence of things, but once you do it's simple enough. A lot of decks and pieces to keep in order, though.

The expansions can make it a fair bit more complicated, though (and increase the required table space in one case). You can play with any combination of expansions, though.

ok, I need a minute here.

who allows their guests to eat around their precious boardgames? Especially, Talisman?

I <3 Risk.

I just got this for xmas but I want to replace some of the wooden pieces with different kinds (for example, replace red with elves, black with future soldiers, blue with pirates, etc).

Does anyone know where I can find game pieces like that?

just picked up catan a month ago. still trying to get a game together for it. have the people, just haven't been able to get three together at the same time the past few weeks.

intrigued by that Arkham Horror game in here... will definitely look into it more.

Has anyone had much experience with Zombies! That's another one I want to pick up the first set for at least.

And my brother just grabbed the new release of Talisman. Very close to 2nd Edition and a really sharp package. The problem we always had with it was that our games always seemed to span hours and hours.... hardly the 60-90 minutes most people say their games last. :\

Monopoly and their ilk have broken game play. Puerto Rico and Caylus please.

I have a hard time playing monopoly now. There are som many more games that are better balanced and more fun. When I was a kid it was great, but now..not so much.

Sorry for double post, didn't notice you were asking about Zombies until I posted. But Zombies is a good game, rather simple but good. I recommend it if you have atleast 3 people, 5 makes it really fun.

Any Axis and Allies fans here?

I don't mind Axis and Allies except that certain strategies always have to be followed, for example if you are controlling the Russians, you always have to go at the Germans hard, if you don't you are screwed!

I have never played any of the expansions, which may play out different though?

Played some Agricola over the weekend.

IMG_0891.jpg

First impressions: it's in German and you have to cross-reference your translations as you play. With hundreds (literally) of cards, that's a real pain in the backside, especially if you're trying to keep cards secret from the other players.

Second impressions: a lot of potential here. A lot seems to depend on the luck of the cards you get dealt. You get seven jobs and can't change them once the game starts, so how you play may be dictated by those jobs. My opponent ended up with one job that gave bonus victory points for each room in a stone house, another that gave bonus victory points for having a stone house, another that made it easier to build his house, and another that made it easier to upgrade his house to stone. No fair! Fortunately my randomly picked what-the-hell-is-going-on-here 'strategy' worked better than his, and the one useful occupation in my hand made it even cheaper and easier to operate.

Is this one available in an English language version? Because I can't see it getting much play as long as it's all in German requiring card-by-card translation...

Interestingly, this falls into the very small minority of board games that can be played by as few as one player (it's 1-5 players). Arkham Horror is another (1-8, I believe). Warhammer Quest is the third of these rare creatures. Anyone come across any more?

+1 Puerto Rico (in the same "universe" there's also San Juan which focuses more on "in-town" production which is not too bad. only the brown worker-tokens are... strange)

Just tried San Juan over the weekend. Fun game. It's simple, yet the violet buildings allow you to try different strategies.

What do you mean about the worker-tokens?

Awesome 2 player games. Twilight Struggle is currently the #3 rated game over at BGG. So freaking epic!

(Note that this pic uses several custom components the game doesn't normally come with)

My favorite random Twilight Struggle pic over at BGG:
pic194278_md.jpg

1960 is fun as well, and is a good alternative that doesn't take as long as Twilight.

Also recently played Manila, which turned out to be a really well-themed game of craps (essentially anyway), but with pirates!

My gf bought it before Christmas, and we've played a lot over the Holidays.
I had almost forgotten how great this game is, but Monopoly rocks.

To be fair Monopoly is "ok" as long as you realize it's 90% luck and 10% cheating, actually the cheating kind of depends on luck as well, so I'll just call that as an even 100%.

here are some oldies but goodies I'll be bringing out this coming weekend for the Monthly "beer and Pretzels" retroboard-con. lots of fun if you can find them:

pic20256_md.jpg

Also, Warhammer Quest, the sucessor to HeroQuest By Games Workshop is the best Dungeoncrawl ever made, also out of print! look at all the loot you get in that box!

pic21620_md.jpg

as a hobby retailer, I just wanted to say to folks here, ASK YOUR SHOPS ABOUT OUT OF PRINT GAMES! More importantly, ask them to check with all of their distributors on out of print games! We have a few distributors who looking through their lists each month have plenty of out of print games still in inventory, usually for a pretty decent discount. So if you like something in this thread, go to a local gaming, hobby, or comic shop and ask them to specifically check with their distributors on a certain game. I'm not saying there's even a good chance they'll have it, but you never know unless you urge them to ask.

Might not be what you're looking for but I there is a Lord Of the Rings-based Risk board which have plenty of elves.

Yea, I figure I can get some pieces from LOTR risk and some from Risk 2120 if I can find a place that sells the pieces independently of the whole board... the problem is finding that store.

Coming Soon...

In the mean time, Boardgamegeek is your friend:

English Occupation Decks
English Action, Round, Begging, and Major Improvement Decks
English Minor Improvement Decks
I don't know if this covers everything (I don't have the game yet), but if not have a look on BGG. There are some other things on there like English boards, etc, that I haven't bothered to link to, again because I don't know how useful they are.

Ooh! This one have been fairly well buzzed. I just played Cuba, another popular new one. Felt like Puerto Rico with way more interesting decisions.

Betrayal at House on the Hill. Even non-boardgamers like this game.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/10547

It's a modular board game where up to six players enter a "haunted" house through the front door which promptly locks behind him. They then begin exploring, adding rooms to the 1st & 2nd floors as well as the basement as they go. At some point, the "Haunt" will go off and one of the players will find out that they're the Traitor, at which point the mission is revealed to the survivors (as a team) and the traitor individually, (they each have their own separate mission logs) and they spend the rest of the game trying to achieve their goals.

the box cover is awesome on this one! I heard that this title was going out of print. however I do remember seeing it in Toys R us last summer, and I was going to pick it up, but got denied by the wife. "YOU HAVE TOO MANY GAMES ALREADY"

Which one? All of them are IMO. ;)

I'm assuming you're referring to Twilight. The game is awesome, just realize that until the players start learning the cards and figuring out strategies, the USA will have a harder time keeping up with the Soviets in the early game, which led many to wonder if the game was unbalanced towards the USSR when the game first came out.

Zombies! is fun, unfortunately the fun factor drops off quickly as the game goes on. It starts to drag, and toward the end of it you just stop fucking with people cause you want the game to end. Also since it's all based on dice rolls you can literally do nothing a whole game while everyone else is getting good rolls and speeds along.

I'd recommend "Betrayal at House on the Hill" as an alternative, not quite the same type of game... but still in the same vein and a lot more entertaining.

It can be a disaster, though. The different haunts are wildly unbalanced, and in one particularly unfortunate game one player ended up in such a state that they died as soon as the haunt started (they were injured to within a point of death, then poisoned and couldn't be healed without a room we hadn't found yet).

What think you of Monsters Menace America?

Been looking for a good, fun but not too deep 2p game. Kind of a nice middle-ground between pure simple games and the super-complex strategy games (i.e., kind of like Robo Rally).

Very good, but it turns into a dice-fest at the end of the game.

If you want a fun zombie game, try Last Night On Earth. Full of cliche B-movie zombie fun!

Wow, so many people like strategy type games here. I'm more into the thinking party games.

What I've been playing for years on occasions with friends and family is Cranium and Loaded Questions. I especially like Loaded Questions, since the point is to see how much you really know about your friends. Everyone gets asked a question and they write down the answer. Then everyone guesses who wrote what answer. It's very simple but very fun. You can try to throw off people by writing outrageous or funny answers too. There's also an Adult version of the game with sexual questions.
