Lot of game stores sell only MSRP and really can't do much better. Profit made on board games and gaming in general is shit, you only get about 45-35% markup past wholesale normally, and with these expensive big box sets, stores have to pay a shit ton just for inventory. Coolstuffinc is a normal store but they specialize in mass sales through online. If you ever been to there physical location they have a small warehouse just for board games since they deal in such volume online.

I found my set of Catan, 5/6, Seafarers, and SF 5/6 for like 50$ total since the store was going out of business :( And I prefer to get things local because only Amazon ships for free to Alaska (but some of their prices are high) where other boardgame sites charge 20+ for shipping :(

The Alaska thing might make it a bit different. Although, I think one of those two sites gives out free shipping if you spend 100 bucks. Might be worth saving up some money and getting 3-4 games all at once instead of piecemeal.

I like to support my local store a bit just because it would really suck if they went under. To be honest, that place probably doesn't need me. They seem to make most of their money on weekend nights with D&D and card game players. I swear they have 100 people there every weekend night and I believe they charge a fee for the leagues that play there.. but I could be wrong.

My own FLGS was originally an online only store that later opened up a storefront. So, if you're at their retail location (which is really quite nice) you'll find everything being sold at MSRP. However, if you order on their website and choose in-store pickup, you can get their standard online discount of around 20%. It's the best of both worlds!

Don't discount amazon either. I've actually gotten stuff cheap there once or twice.

I have one local game store that is occasionally competitive price wise too. They just seem to randomly sell certain games cheaper than usual. I don't complain too much about it :)

The Westeros themed Battlelore shit is the most disappointing thing ever. I realize there are some differences in the mechanics of each one, but that whole system is really pushing for the 'most milked franchise ever' award.

I'll wait for the Song of Ice & Fire adventure game.

What is the best Westoros game?

I'm a giant GRRM fan (damnit GAF, I came in nerdy, you made me nerdier)... and while the Game of Thrones board game was fun, it was entirely too complicated for my friends to get into.

Are there any easier ones where I might be able to kill Lannisters with Starks?

Amazon seems good for the cheaper stuff where the other sites can't really discount very much since shipping is typically free on Amazon.

I just cracked and ordered Pandemic and its expansion on eBay last night. I'm usually not one to buy board games, but my friends and I played the crap out of it a couple months ago and I really want to have my own copy.

Well, that new Battlelore-themed game will certainly be easier.

I'm a big fan of the CCG, now LCG. Try one of the pre-fab boxed sets that lets you pick a house and play against other houses. I was Targ all the way.

EDIT: Try the A Game of Thrones Core set.

Ordered a copy of 'Incursion'. Basically it's heavily influenced by Space Hulk, but set in the Alternate World War 2 universe of Secrets of the Third Reich. It's all cardboard, but they do sell separately pewter figs to use with the game. Power armored US troops infiltrating secret labs of the Nazis :D

Edit: Removed initial response, but I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around how anyone could think GoT is too complicated. Risk is no less hard to teach than this is.

I've been looking at this game over the past couple of days. It's a bit pricey for what you get in the base game and that's really keeping me at bay. Let us know how it is when you get it.

My friends won't play risk with me either.

Really, I have two really limiting factors when it comes to board games.

1) My friends have no patience for complicated games. They like stuff that is really very basic. i.e. you only have 3-4 possible actions and turns are very limited on actions. This means I have to get very simple games with deep strategy (Catan, TTR, etc). Several of my friends find Puerto Rico too complicated despite it being pretty straightforward.

2) Time. If it takes more than an hour attention begins to wane. Longer than 1.5 hours and I've lost half the players. 2 hours and everyone but one friend and I have given up.

This means that there are a *ton* of games I really want to play but can't. Agricola cheif amongst them.

I am slowly trying to turn my friends into hard core board game players so I can play 4-5 hour long games with a ton of rules, but it is going to take time.

The game is free on their website by the way, you can download the rules and all the stuff to print out and play. What happened was that they were making this game and GW announced rerelease of Space Hulk, so the head of the company freaked out and said he was not going to compete with GW and such a classic like Space Hulk. So they released all their work online for free, basically under the idea that they would make some money off selling the miniatures (which are very nice).

But they got lots of feedback and requests, so they went ahead and created the box set. It is kinda pricey it seems though supposed to be decent quality, and also large part of the cost is that it's a limited small run of the game for now unless it is a smash hit, I doubt they will be printing anymore copies any time soon.

Would you guys say that Ticket to Ride is a good gateway game?
It's definitely easy to get into. The first time I played we had (IIRC) two people who had played it before and three people who hadn't, and everyone caught on quickly and we had a pretty competitive game.

I can't really speak for whether it'll help people get into other games, but I imagine the combination of accessible + decent depth + fun would at least encourage people to try other games they're not familiar with.

Also, anyone else looking forward to Mystery Express? Looks neat.

yes. It has hooked many of my friends in the last few weeks.

Also, any recomendations on a C&C type game? or any good two player games?

I don't want Memoir 44 because it looks silly (I know, I know).

Battle Lore and Ancients both look kind of snazy... and I guess Battle Lore just announced the Westoros one today, so maybe I should wait for that so I can kill Lannisters (house rule: I am always Starks).

I also just ordered Hive because it looks like pretty simple 2 player fun.

Put in an order today for Chaos in the Old World, Dominion, and Brass.

I am excited for these all to come in, though I don't know when I'll actually have time to play them since the next few weeks and weekends are going to be busy as hell.

Umm if you think Memoir 44 looks silly, then your going to not like Battlelore or Westoros, since they use the exact same system.

System was originally developed for Battlecry, Civil War board game and then simply adapted to WWII, and Fantasy genres. Gameplay is the same outside of a few optional add ons.

Twilight Struggle and 1960 Making of a President immediately come to mind.

Really really good one. Do it nowwww.

Also, Catan Card Game.

Dominion works well for 2 players, and may very well satisfy your casual-only group too. Short, pretty simple rules-wise, but lots of variety due to the volume of cards.

Also, @Xia, I'm getting a photobucket picture for your av, fyi.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good way to keep track of health in CCG/TCG's? perhaps wheel based ones ?

I'm lookin for something to use in the Warcraft TCG, but I would probably use it with any boardgame that could use something like it.

Id like to get a few though, for the Hero, and then for the ally's, any suggestions?

Might want to consider changing the image host of your avatar (try tinypic.com, maybe) unless you want to end up without an avatar.

In Magic, we just use spare cards we have lying around. 3 cards facing one way to count as denominations of 5, 5 more cards lying perpendicularly to that to represent denominations of 1 that you can subtract from. Not sure if that's work for Warcraft or not.

I've always used dice. Depending on what values of health you need to keep track of a few D20s or some other denomination would work pretty well.

Well it isn't the gameplay that I think looks silly. It's the little plastic army men. Looking at them, the only one that looks kind of cool seems to be C&C: ancients.

I know it seems silly, but the look/theme of a game has a lot to do with how much I enjoy playing it. Miniatures for the most part look kind of goofy to me.

Dice sounds like a good idea. I guess I just thought they would make cool health clicker wheels or something, I like buying little doodads like that, heh.

someone invent clicker health wheels ! like on the bottom of those little Hero Clix.

Ok,

So I just ordered Twilight, Battle Line, Catan, and Robo Rally.

The last one has nothing to do with your suggestions just looks sort of fun and have heard a few recommendations in the past in this thread. Plus, the free shipping meant I had to spend more.

Fuck this god damn thread. I'm out like 300 bucks in the last few weeks. All because those fuckers at MB had to come out with a new fucking version of Monopoly that everyone made fun of.

I had a bag of counters. My wife used to make fun of me. "Don't forget your jewels!"

That is a super solid lineup. Take your time learning TS; it can be intimidating at first because it feels like a real wargame, but it's really not that tough. And just like 1960, the relationship between theme and card abilities is awesome.

Got the final game from an auction I won on BGG today. It's Mission:Red Planet by Bruno Faidutti and Bruno Cathalla. It's an area control game with role selection. The theme is very steampunk (19 century explorers explore Mars) and the bits look really nice. Hopefully it'll see table time this weekend. Other than that Last Night on Earth may be pulled out again on Saturday. My cousin is going to be around and she loves that game.

For the people who were wondering I did get to play Buffy last weekend. My GF and I both enjoyed ourselves. The game is super luck based and probablly won't have much appeal to non fans but for a mass market TV Tie-in game it's top notch.

The game can support up to five players with one player controlling the evil side and a player controlling one or more good characters. There are four scenarios included each representing the first four seasons of the show. Each scenario has a big bad as well as different objectives for both players. A typical turn has you rolling the movement dice, searching a location (which can give you one of three cards, weapons, magic, or help), trade cards, and fight. Combat is resolved by rolling the fight dice which can be modified by the help cards.

The game is complete fan service. From the locations on the board to the people on the help cards there won't be a single fan that doesn't recognize them. They even include some of the more obscure characters.

Also, don't be like me. Look through the Twilight Struggle cards before you play. Knowing what cards exist can really make a difference.

Stupid War Games.

That's kind of funny. Bruno said in his Geek of the Week thread that the one thing he regretted was that the bits in M:RP weren't nice enough =P

M:RP is a decent game. I've likened it to El Grande with more randomness involved. So if you like the area control mechanics, I think El Grande would be a good "next step" game to try.

I pulled the trigger on that one because I want to play a few really complicated games. My issue has been being able to get people that would be into something that takes hours to play. I am pretty confident at least 2 of my friends would be willing to go along with something like that at least once.

Since it is only a 2 player game that means I can at least play it twice!

Oh, wow really? Actually I think the simplicity of the bits are what I like so much about them. This is a game where they really could have gone overboard with the bits but didn't. The simplicity of the ships make the art work stand out which is really nice. I was lured in by extravagant bits with Bootleggers and I quickly found out how pointless they were.

Will do.

Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders arrived today.

The wife was home when they got here and she was looking at the new tiles with me. We got to the ones that have new cities on three sides and new cities on all four sides and she said "ooo those are neat ones."

The expansion also adds a couple of tiles that have a diagonal city bordering two sides, with a road coming striaght out of it. A tile combo that was (very sorely) missing from the base game - in almost every game we played one of the two of us needed a tile like that. She noticed, and commented on how she was glad these sets included a few :D :D

It almost brings a tear to my eye. This fall I was asking for advice on converting her into a BGG player. I think, as of today, the conversion is officially complete.

Congrats!

Be careful though, if it goes too far you might accidentally turn her into the equivalent of a Gaffer - my wife has gotten to the point where she prefers watching and talking about people playing boardgames and the strategies people do and what she would have done instead, rather than actually playing them. It's gone horribly meta.

Ha, that's great. I'm not too worried though. She's officially into BGs now, but I'm still (and will probably always be) the pusher. She just isn't the type to do research and buy a new game for us to try all on her own, like I am. The day a boardgame arrives at our house that she ordered is the day I eat my shoe.

For a while I was paranoid and thought she was only playing them to humor me. But now she's the one to suggest Carcassonne more often than I am, so I don't worry about that anymore.

I bet if you take her to a brick and mortar store she'll pick some stuff up to look at, and probably want to buy some things. My wife is generally very thrifty and doesn't like spending money, but man, get her in a game store...

I would also like to point out that it is very easy to drop 100 bucks in a B&M store.

It's not very hard to do online either come to think of it.

Also, I just ordered Memoir 44 :( I saw a youtube video and it looked like fun.

I have to be careful when I go to the local comic shop. They recently go this in

and.... I've though about it.... but luckily I'm not a huge Catan fan ($300 bucks also)

Hell, I'm thinking of picking up a 2nd copy of the M44 base game so I can get some 4+ player Overlord games going. :lol
