Just picked this up the other night. Players cooperate against ancient Lovecraftian horrors. So many cards and tokens!

Just finished playing this and a Touch of Evil yesterday along with Puerto Rico. i LOVE Puerto Rico. That game is just always fun.

My boardgame group has been a bit more active lately which makes me happy; mainly with Arkham. I am up to 12 play throughs with it. Ever since we got the rules down it has been a lot more fun (although every once in a while we still find a few small mistakes). We had a long day yesterday playing 4 games, each time with a different expansion. We set a new high score with Curse of the Dark Pharaoh, but got our ass kicked when playing Kingsport. Also just barely scraped by when playing King in Yellow.

We also played a quick game of Red November. This was the second time I played it and it is pretty fun. Easy to learn and explain to a group of new people. We all had about 10 minutes left when the blocked hatches got to be too much and the sub overheated since we couldn't get the track down in time.

I got Battlestar Galactica from Coolstufinc.com a bit ago, and we are going to do a game or two of it next Saturday. Reading through the rules tonight to start getting a grasp on it. I will try to get a slightly larger playing of Red November as well.

Hahaha we literally just played a game of Red November where the Heat track was three away from the end, and the very last two events were +1, +2. I said it was worth it to die in such a glorious and fortuitous manner.

Damn, AH and ToE? I'd have a tough time with that considering the similarities (and the fact I prefer AH). How'd it go over?

I'm not on board with Pandemic, but I do think Dominion is pretty great.
In fairness to Dominion, I loved my first four or so games, then got a really rotten random deck and haven't had the chance to go back since. Between it and Pandemic, I'd also definitely go with Dominion. Planning on working both back into the rotation though once the expansions come out. I have to say Red November may have soured me on Pandemic just a touch because Red November is just so riotously fun (see above).

Oh, I also might be getting my hands on Full Metal Planete within the near future. One of my favorite games as a kid (grandfather from France brought it over) and even though it's uber-rare I might be able to get a decent deal on it.

I actually didn't enjoy ToE and AH. To me they are a bit too passive, especially ToE. We went after The Vampire on the Basic Rules and it wasn't very difficult - just really time consuming.

AH is dope as long as you have someone running the game who is very familiar with the rules and gameflow (and most people aren't, not even experienced players) and you play with 3-5 investigators. ToE I couldn't get into either though in my limited playtime with it. Just felt mostly like AH Lite to me.

Anyone know of a good game that is about tactical small-scale battles (with movement on a grid)? I'd like something like Valkyria Chronicles (if any of you have played it), where luck plays some role, but is overshadowed by smart unit placement and movement.

Dungeons and Dragons miniatures doesn't really lend itself to movement strategy, and I have the original Squad Leader, but it's really complicated and seems to be simply alot of simulation dressing on top of a rather simple miniatures game (although I haven't played with all of the rules yet).

Two games that I'm curious about are Pandemic and Tide Of Iron.

A few other games that I've played recently were:

* Battlestar Galactica. Its interesting, but kinda meh. Tries to do too much IMO.
* Last Night On Earth - This can be hilarious fun with the right group
* Dracula - Another game that takes FOREVER to play
* Star Wars: Epic Duels - Trash IMO

I'm no grognard, but Conflict of Heroes is quite fun and relatively deep (more so than Memoir '44, which you should check out if you are looking for something lighter).

Pandemic is Battlestar without anything interesting happening. Yeah, it's a horrible analogy and I'm hating.

I need to get better at Dominion. I suckkkkkkkkk. Three games tonight, and I was last, last, and 3rd.

My wife came up with a pretty good card combo though. Workshop for a free feast (which I always considered useless), and then feast (trash it) for a free 5 cost card. She had a pretty good little workshop-factory out of that.

Seriously though, I suck real bad at Dominion.

What about Through The Ages? It looks like its something that would take forever to learn and play, but I really like the idea of a board game version of civ that doesn't suck :)

In addition I'm looking for games in two genres :

* Superheros
* Starship combat

Did you ever play a CCG? Drafting and deck building experience seems to help.

And apparently incredibly hard to find in the US. Typical.
FITS does sound cool for a light party game. Talk about a stealth release though. A place called unclesgames has a copy, but I've never used them. Might be worth checking out as I don't think it's available anywhere else and it's going for $60 or something on the BGG marketplace.

I have. I'm actually pretty good at those too. I can't wrap my head around the in-process deck building of Dominion though. I have a great deck lined up for late game, but keeping my draw odds good and keeping my deck productive as it grows is proving difficult. I keep trying to make rules in my brain about how many turns should go by before I start grabbing greens, or which part of the game is it important to focus on money versus actions, but making hard and fast rules don't seem to work, particularly as the ten play cards change.

Also, I have an annoying habit of winding up with seven gold to spend on a turn (grr). I think this was a problem of overemphasizing the copper -> silver upgrade over the silver -> gold upgrade though (particularly through mines), and things worked out a bit better the last game of the night as I tweaked that a bit.

Holy shit.

SO MANY PIECES

With, or without expansions? Because if the answer is "without", just wait :lol

Recently played Puerto Rico, has a medium level learning curve but I loved it.

SO many strategies you can pursue.

First time I played I won because I went for that building that gives you +1 victory pt per devliery.

Second time I knew more and decided to rush for a factory money bonus so I could further rush building stuff to give me plenty of victory points.

Any other games like it? I didn't own Puerto Rico so I can't play it again so soon but I'm interested in other games just as good.

Puerto Rico is still my favorite board game. Although one of my friends kind of breaks it by just going for two or three end-game buildings. Then he gets upset when we plan to keep him from doing it beforehand.

I'm not sure if the game would be better by limiting each player to one end-game building.

You could try the spin-off light card game based on Puerto Rico, San Juan. Solid game.

OK, So I dug through this thread.. here is what I currently play with friends:

1) World of Warcraft
2) Risk
3) Monopoly (I know, I know, but it is easy to play and fun with friends)
4) Catan
5) Carcassone

I am thinking of buying

1) Puero Rico
2) Arkham Horror
3) Robo Rally
4) Warhammer Quest
5) Game of Thrones

Based on our liking the first 5, will we like the second five? Also, Game of Thrones is based more on me *loving* the books. Is the game actually good?

Excellent game given what it's trying to cover and how it's trying to do it (no map, cards only, etc), just be sure to have a lot of free time and patient friends willing to learn it. Going through a few simple games, then intermediate, then advanced will take a while.

1) Puerto Rico
It's something of a jump from Catan and Carcassonne, difficulty-wise. Sometimes takes people a few plays to wrap their heads around the game. Just an fyi; obviously it's one of the most praised games evar.

2) Arkham Horror
This is really nothing at all like any of the games you listed. It's co-op, it involves lengthy set-up, and takes hours to learn (unless you have someone teaching you, learn it yourself and play through it yourself once or twice is always my suggestion), and with four people or so, games can take 3+ hours. All that said, it's a very rewarding and fun experience, the game itself is beautiful, and the theme is great.

3) RoboRally
I make no bones about having a soft spot for this game. Again, it's very different from the games you listed. Program robots, race around one of many tracks shooting each other and falling into pits. Not the deepest game around, but it's hard to have more fun, especially when you have 4+. I think it's a bit pricey now (or at least going for MSRP), but this is because stock is getting depleted and WotC will likely never do a reprint, so just as well to get on board now.

If I were you I'd get Puerto Rico, Warhammer Quest, and Game of Thrones. GoT is actually a really good game and I don't like the books that much.

Arkham Horror is a pretty good game but just takes way too long to play in my opinion. If you and your friends can stomach a 4-5 hour game then go for it.

Never played Robo Rally but I only hear good things about it. Still can't recommend it one way or the other.

well, I only really need 3 games. We want to get a bi-monthly rotation going on the games so they don't get old (i.e. we played Catan for 2 months straight and got kind of tired of it for a while). Length is not a huge issue (i.e. we play Risk).

We also want to make sure we get a lot of variety. Puerto Rico seems a no brainer because it is supposed to be so good.

I was thinking maybe get Arkham Horror because it looks very different. Robo Rally for the same reasons.

Game of Thrones because I will get to right wrongs from the novels. :D

I ordered the expansion to Twilight Imperium earlier today. The game might take forever to play, but I love all of the different aspects it incorporates, from resource management to combat to diplomacy. From what I read expansion fixes some of the major problems with the base game (the card that gives you two victory points) and it expands it. Hoping to set up a massive 8 player game some time next month.

Be sure to post your impressions. That game keeps catching my eye, and I've been wondering how good it is.

Anyone have impressions on battlelore? I saw it the other day at a game shop at it looked pretty decent.

That's true; you do play Risk. Even a six-player AH game would be a cakewalk compared to most games of Risk.

Yeah, we may use Game of Thrones to replace Risk. I read some reviews and it seems like a deeper version of risk (with some additional elements) that doesn't take as long to play.

I love risk, but every now and then we hit a 6+ hour game of it.. and I hate when it is painfully obvious someone has already won but it takes another 2+ hours to actually finish it (monopoly has the same issue). We play enough that it is rare that someone gets going on a role, but it is certainly a game where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. So a bad start will doom you... but the death will be slow and painfull.

Screaming_Gremlin said:
That looks pretty interesting. What does the game play like, Axis and Allies?
Pretty good review here.

History of the World (HotW) is a rethink on the classic Risk style of game where the combat based rolls come think and fast and world domination is the key objective. But it is more than that too. HotW plays more like a civilisation building game, only with the economic, technological and political elements stripped out - leaving combat and area control at its core.

What makes HotW work though is the fact that each player will control 7 different Empires famous in the history of this planet and they will be played over time periods known as Epochs. The challenge is to expand each of your Empires in such a way so that they remain in existence for as long as possible. This reflects a truly great civilisation and therefore is rewarded with points when each and every Epoch is scored (player by player).

Therein lies the challenge of HotW and this makes it feel like 'Risk on Steroids' or 'Risk with brains'.

Take a look at this GeekList too Stooge. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/38013

Thanks!

Looks like Game of Thrones is 3rd on his list. Coupled with my love of the books and

Major spoiler from the books ahoy!

my need for Rob to crush the Lannisters and avenge his father

it sounds like the one for me. Of course my friends have not read the books so they will have no idea what is going on. I will simply force the worst players into Lannister and Greyjoy

Fucking awesome game. One of the classics.

Supposedly it's being rereleased sometime this year... but I can't find anything more specific than that.

I'll have to keep my eye out for that. Reading the review posted earlier really makes me want to pick it up. I'm just not paying as much as eBay wants for the game.

DO IT. I kind of want to go to my first gaming[-related] con this year--either bgg.con or gencon--but for example for bgg.con you have to reserve your rooms like now or even last week it seems (don't really see the point in staying in another hotel and not getting the full dork-out experience.

Come to Seattle for PAX :)

Tonight I tried Settlers of Catan at my local Magic: the Gathering store. Settlers of Catan counts as a boardgame, right? It was fun, although the end of the game tended to sneak up on me. The strategic thinking was intense.
