Huh, that is interesting. I'm curious to see how the debt mechanic will change the game but perhaps not so curious as to rush out and buy a copy of Le Havre, as it sounds very similar to Agricola. Still, my buddy may decide to give it a shot, in which case I'll report back. Thanks for the impressions!

FnordChan

Its funny. Our group had access for both and kept picking Agricola over La Havre. That's not to say that the game isn't good, it is, but you know how it is with Agricola -- there's enough variety in the cards that you don't really ever feel done with it.

The Dominion train keeps on rolling! Awesome art!

There really needs to be a good dedicated board gaming podcast. Dice Tower is OK but I just think the main guy is such a dick and so passive aggressive I have a hard time with it sometimes.

Not sure how good it is but I just found The D6 Generation. Going to give a few episodes a listen at work tomorrow.

There is also The Spiel. While the hosts are likeable they spend 85% of the show pretty much reading out of the rule books.

I played my first couple of games of Puerto Rico tonight. My GF and I played the two player variant and we had a really good time. We used the official 2 player variant and I think it played well enough. I'm sure with more people it plays better but I don't feel like I missed out on anything.

Full Seaside manual with all the cards is out.

Victory cards are considered "suppl...to get 6 embargo tokens on the Province pile!

Some interesting ones.

Embargo (cost 2)

+2 coin

Trash this card. Put an Embargo
token on top of any supply pile
When a player buys a card, he
gains a Curse card per Embargo
token on that pile.

Outpost (cost 5)

You only draw 3 cards (instead of 5)
in this turn’s Clean-up phase.
Take an extra turn after this one.
This can’t cause you to take more
than two consecutive turns

Treasury (cost 5)

+1 card
+1 action
+1 coin

When you discard this from play,
if you didn’t buy a Victory card
this turn, you may put this on top
of your deck.

Played the hell out of "Last Night on Earth" last week on my birthday. Had 5 players and it was a blast. Must score the expansions as soon as possible as zombies are a pretty soft sell for folks.

Got some Runebound expansions as well, and the last big box Arkham Horror box. AH is so big, so fiddly, and so terrifyingly awesome now, I'm afraid to play it :)

Swung by The Compleat Strategist in NYC when I was visiting there. After being revived from my joy induced heart attack, I picked up the Game of Thrones LCG (the wife loves that series, but the boardgame, while awesome, needs 3 to play) but have not tried it yet. Seems complicated, but will tackle this weekend.

Also got a lot of GW paints. Tried to stick to the unique ones for Sapce Hulk (never had a need for purple paints before) but got carried away, and now my OCD is wishing I had just bought the complete Foundation and wash sets. Also got their painting guide as I am weak on techniques that don't start with "paint with broad strokes" :)

Painted some LNOE" zombies and used wood stain as a dip, but applied it MUCH too heavily. Ok for zombies, they are supposed to be dirty, but would have ruined a normal figure. Have to practice more.

Can't wait for Runewars. 2 HUNDRED minis!!!!

Finally hit my local game show here in San Bernadino County. The place was Gameology and it smelled like farts.

Decent selection of games though. I picked up copies of Race For the Galaxy and Dominion for myself. I'd always played copies that other folks owned.

There's a Thursday night board game thing there, but I'm kinda wary of going.

I was spoiled in Minnesota, The Source really is one of the best game shops I've come across.

Move up to NorCal! ;P

Seaside cards sound hot hot hot. I think that Treasure Map sounds pretty amazing.

Trash 2 copies from your hand, put gain 4 gold coins to the top of your deck. Crazy awesome.

I still haven't even unwrapped the last expansion. :/

Dominion is by far the most popular game among the various people I play with. Hell, sometimes I think it's my favorite board game, period. I've made trades with my wife (we can play Beatles Rock Band with everyone this week--my week to pick--if we can play Dominion after Seaside comes out--her week to pick).

fucking shitballs!

why didnt i know there was a new edition of Space Hulk due out this year?! WHY?

playing DoW2 got me all hot and bothered and tonight i found out that there was a release of this fantastic table top game (its 20th year anniversary), with new minis, new rules, new board pieces.

but the best part is that it was a one time LIMITED print run! fun right?

Games Workshop cocksuckers. now i need to hunt down a copy on ebay or some horseshit. why couldnt i have stumbled onto this news 4 months ago when i could have just picked up a copy? shit.

sorry, just needed a place to complain.

anyone ever play the game? i have the first and second editions. i love it.

Where are you? There were still some copies at the GW store in Fairfax VA as recently as 2 Sundays ago (found AFTER I got my copy on ebay). Call around if you can.

My ebay copy was around $145 shipped, which seems to be around the average a few weeks back, so if you can't find it at a B&M store, plan accordingly.

AWESOME components, great sculpts, and it seems to include at least some of the expansion parts (Broodlord, Librarian, etc) so I think this is all we are gonna get from Space Hulk for a while.

I think they would be CRAZY to not reissue it, even if it is a lesser quality version. They need to remake the PC game was well, I want an iphone version :)

I just need to get that custom cut foam storage thing to protect my minis. All those fangs and talons look so fragile...

im in CT. i dont have a GW store in my area (used to have 2!), but plenty of B&M's. i need to start making some calls.

yeah this set looks awesome. the minis are great looking, though ive been reading that some set have been coming with some form of damage.

im really excited that they seem to have beefed up the game since the last edition. one of the things that was so great about the original Ed. and the expansions was the exrta rues for psychers, genestealer hybrids, and more weapons for marines (lightning claws, assault cannon, etc).

im glad they brought at least some of that back. 2nd ED was great, but pretty light on extras. im excited that Librarians are back.

i really need to get my hands on a copy of this.

My local shop has like 3 copies of SH still on the shelf. Also seems like lot on ebay are still going for less than GW's asking price. They sold out of the print run but there's a ton of copies in circulation still.

well all of that gets my hopes up. now i just need to dig up the cash...

I played both sides in scenario one and two. Was destroyed for the most part because I was playing against somebody who'd been playing Space Hulk since first edition.

Still had a great time. I love the pared down rules, makes the game truly about how to handle each encounter.

Space Marines are tough to play properly. I'm really needing to come up with some good techniques. Watching my opponent go first taught me a lot. But the he came back with awesome zerg strats for the genestealers.

Pandemic is rocking our socks. We must have played at least 10-15 games in the past two days. The difficulty ramps up pretty quickly from normal to hard and it is damn brutal. We came really close to beating it this last game. Literally 1 turn away from winning when the last outbreak hit and we lost.

I just got my games that I won through a geeklist auction at BGG, Cleopatra and the Society of Architects and Colosseum. Both games are new with Colosseum still in it's shrink wrap. If you haven't checked out those auctions before you should because there are good deals to be had.

Played a couple hands of Warhammer: Invasion. The LCG starter box feels like a great standalone -- though some decks (Dwarves) feel overpowered against others (Chaos). Plays much like other Eric Lang games.

Got in a surprise short plan-change board gaming session this weekend. I should say Dominion session, since that's all we played (no Seaside yet, sadly).

I won 2 of the 4 games, which was nice. Had really nice use of the Conspirator one game (with Village, Laboratory, Market, and Throne Room all out, I didn't understand why no one else really went for them). The other game I won by stacking my deck in a can't-be-too-screwed by the Swindler sort of way, since I saw everyone buying them early. Pretty much went all treasure, gold working well for me as none of the other 6-cost cards were out.

Dominion got a TON of play this weekend. Lots of Seaside. Sadly, I didn't sit in on a single hand. I had some bigger fish to fry though.

Played Warhammer: Chaos in the Old World, Agricola and Steam yesterday. All big, brain-burners (except Warhammer, really -- mostly straight antagonism).

Was sad I didn't get to try out the Seaside stuff. Folks seemed to really love it.

I was really hoping to get some sort of shipment confirmation email today from CSI but I didn't. >:\

EDIT: There it is. Estimated delivery 11/03!!!! :(

yep, its hard for marines. not easy to get a win with them at all. Hulk has always been like that. gotta use those corridors and overwatch effectively and also getting a bit lucky helps.

its fun as hell to win with them though. its also fun to tear them up with Genestealers.

glad you liked it. i cant wait to pick up a copy (hopefully by next month).

A friend of mine hosted a small game day at his place this weekend, the highlight of which was Kingsburg.

Kingsburg is a worker placement type game with dice luck and a nice fantasy theme. The idea is that all the players in the game are charged with helping defend a kingdom from a monster that will attack in the winter. During the other three seasons each of the players prepares for the coming of the monster by building up their military strength and gathering resources to produce buildings that aid you throughout the game. The buildings have to be built in order along various specialized tracks; for example, I focused on a track that gave military advantages and maxed it out by the end of the game, but I couldn't have just jumped to the biggest building. Other tracks involve trading goods for points or various other bonuses.

In order to produce each player rolls three dice each turn. On the game board are eighteen advisors, numbered in sequence, all of whom bestow goods and/or advantages. Each round the players take turns recruiting help by spending their dice point for point on a given advisor. You can either spend all your dice at once (for example, if you happen to roll an eighteen you're probably going to go with the King at the top of the board) or splitting up your rolls among multiple advisors. The catch is that only one advisor can be recruited at a time and you have to meet the point total of the advisor precisely; if you roll a 13 you can't just put your dice on the 12 - it's the thirteen or splitting the dice among other advisors. Fortunately, there are tokens you can obtain that can be added to your dice total, to help you get that high-point advisor you need. There are also buildings that can affect your dice selection.

The end result is a lot of fun. You spend a lot of time looking around at the board and trying to pull off optimal advisor recruiting before the other players screw you. The lower point advisors are generally more cost effective than a lot of the higher point advisors in terms of converting points on the dice into goods. However, they tend to be squabbled over and so you'll often find yourself taking a less optimal high-point advisor just to make sure you get what you need that turn. This can be crucial - I went from a strong second place to dead last at the end of the game after making a terrible decision in the penultimate round. Cue lots of kicking myself, but it was my own fault and not the games, which ain't bad for something with this much dice luck involved. Meanwhile, as the game goes along you're getting points for successful monster fights, the buildings you're producing, and various other factors. The game ends when the monster (who is increasingly powerful each year) is fought five times, at which point the player with the most points wins.

So, despite my choking at the last minute, I'd recommend Kingsburg to anyone interested in a lighter sort of worker placement sort of game, such as Agricola. Don't get me wrong, I love the delicate combination of farming and pain Agricola offers, but it's nice to play something that isn't as harsh from time to time. And, as it's a Fantasy Flight game, there's the requisite expansion to keep the game interesting after a while. The expansion is modular so you can throw in what you want; we added power cards and a couple of additional production tracks and they seemed like nice additions to the game.

The rest of the game day featured yours truly also coming in dead last at Agricola (I didn't play a bad game or anything and the final totals were pretty close, but I was still the caboose), my sucking hard at two spatial/tile placement games (Genesis and The Downfall of Pompei, neither of which are much my thing), and my pulling out a win in plain ol' Settlers. At least the latter helped soothe my battered gaming ego a bit. All in all, a good time was had by all and, while I need to spend more time playing Stone Age before I run out and buy another worker placement/dice luck game, I enjoyed the hell out of Kingsburg and have it on my mental to-buy list.

There is a Settlers of Catan iphone game out now, $5. Just played a little bit of it so far, but looks good. I've only played the XBLA Catan game, not the board game, so can't say how it compares.

Speaking of Catan, how is it as a board game? Same with Carcassone. I've only played the XBLA versions but they both seem to get good reviews, but seem to be a bit of a chore keeping track of all the points (especially Carcassone). But both have a bazillion expansions so something must be going well with those games, right?

Settlers is one hell of a board game. Setting up the basic game once you're used to it is a snap, and though things get a bit more fiddly when using the expansions (particularly some of the Seafarers scenarios) it's not what you would call difficult. Also, while I enjoy playing online versions of Settlers, it's just not the same as playing with your friends. If you've enjoyed the XBLA version and have some folks you think you can talk into playing, I strongly recommend picking up the basic Settlers game and seeing how you like it.

Great write-up FnordChan.

I'd love to try Kingsburg -- maybe in the spring the next time my group gets together.

I figured since it was an FFG you'd place the workers and make them fight each other, but what you described, actually, was kind of close. Lots of interaction.

Settlers is a fantastic game to revisit every few months: it gets stale when it stays on the table week after week as people assign themselves to certain goals and roles, but it recovers splendidly with a little rest. Its great flaw is the participant limitation: we rarely have either 3 or 4 players. Expansions help, of course, but slow down the game, and it still has the flaw of not allowing my wife and myself to play a game at home alone.

Yeah, from the Essen tweets I've been catching it seems really international feeling.

I think BGG in Texas is going to be my low-cost alternative. Have you done GenCon? It ain't bad if you want to buy and play games.

I wanted to go to so many conventions this year, and the only one I got to go to was E3 and that was for work. :/ Definitely putting Essen on the bucket list. Pax East will probably be my next one though, perhaps.

I'd go to conventions if I didn't live in Australia. The biggest name at a convention this year was Richard Hatch.

After reading/skimming through Dale's report, I really want to go to Essen one year, but would probably go broke if I went.

If you're a boardgaming nerd, Essen is pretty rad. Had the luck of going down for it last year, only for a day, and wish I was there longer. Played some good games. Bought a few, though I had no room for them and then spent the rest of the following day wandering around Amsterdam carrying two pieces of luggage and a pair of bags full of games. It wasn't comfortable, let me tell you, but oh so worth it.

Got some 4-player Agricola action happening tonight. I came in second place by 2 points.

Had an interesting occupation that I never had before: The Lover. For 4 extra food(!!!), you can use the family growth without room, immediately when you play him. So I played him in the 2nd round. The extra family member for so much of the early game helped a lot, but I hated most of my other occupations/improvements, and kept getting screwed out of my "first choice" action spaces, or I think I would have destroyed everyone. As it is, the extra family member is probably the only reason I was competitive (the 3rd and 4th place players were about ten points behind me, I think).

WTF, it's been nearly a week, I demand this thread see more action!

(fortunately, I've got stuff to talk about)

Agricola

I <3 this game again. After last week, I played a 2 player with the wife, and damn it, this game just rocks. I had a sick combo with (I think) Fruit Tree + Manservant giving me 4 food per round for the latter half of the game. This was good, because I didn't have enough family members to do stuff and produce food, so I got to ignore the food part and just do interesting things. I won.

I also hate the game though. Seriously. No game does a better job (so far) of making me want to do things that I can't possibly do. It's not just option paralysis, it's beyond that. I'm not choosing which of my options will be the best, I'm choosing which option I'm ever going to get to explore this game, period. I hate when I get to the point of saying to myself something like this, "if I don't take boars right now, I'm never going to have boars". It's especially bad when taking boars is the wrong move to make too... so I'm making the better strategic choice, but still feeling pissed off about it. Grr.

My shipment arrived!

So I now own Seaside expansion for Dominion, Stone Age, and Le Havre.

Le Havre

- Haven't played yet. Skimmed through the rules. Caylus + Agricola indeed. By the end of the read, it seems as if the game should be fairly simple to actually play, but the set up page of the manual had me giggling. It's like 17 steps, It shows the board and there's this sort of sick twisted flow chart going all the way around pointing out all the things to do. Totally intimidating.

Stone Age

- Also haven't played yet, but damn this game is just as pretty as the outside of the box makes it look. Seriously cool art. Really like what I read of the rules too, seems like this could very easily fall into the "gateway games" category. It's got dice, but like Catan (and from the rules read, maybe superior to it), uses them in a way that is still strategic. Even comes with a dice cup, and it's an awesome one.

Dominion: Seaside

- Whoo boy. This expansion definitely shakes things up. PLayed 2 player with the wife. Duration cards are powerful (and since we were heavily favoring Seaside in our randomization, to try it out, we had a bunch of them). One of my favorites, The Wharf (not as powerful as The Wharf in Puerto Rico, at least not so far), gives you + 2 cards and + 1 buy, now and on your next turn. These stack (of course), so if you get two wharfs out, you're starting your next turn with 9 cards (and 3 buys).

Most sick and twisted powerful card so far though:

Pirate Ship. 2 choices: Do the thief action to everyone, but you must trash (can't take). OR get +1 money for the turn per treasure card you've trashed so far (there are counters for this). My wife got her pirate ship to be worth 8 coins per use. Guess who won THAT round?

Stone Age is a game whose aesthetics really add a lot to the enjoyment. It's quite easy to teach too. My only complaint is that the games feel like they run about 20 minutes long.

Played a couple of games over the last week or so. The first game we played was Bootleggers. It was a game I got off of a bgg.com auction for less than $10 brand new and while the production value is nice the game is only so-so. The object of the game is make $100,000 by selling whiskey to speakeasies. The game comes with tons of little mobster figures, wooden crates, and plastic trucks where you have to fill with wooden cubes in order to ship the goods. While all the components are nice and all the game feels overproduced. For instance, loading the cubes in the trucks is very thematic but ultimately feels like an unnecessary step. I also hate paper money and this games uses it. Overall the game was decent but really not for us. If one of you guys are interested in it I could let it go in a trade, just PM me.

The second game we played, which actually was last night, was Colosseum. This was another game I won in a bgg.com auction and another new one for us. This one was a much better game than Bootleggers. The object is to produce various productions for your colosseum over the course of five turns. You do so by purchasing enhancements for your colosseum, bidding on asset tokens (various preformers, animals, sets, etc.) and moving pawns which represent Roman council members, senators, and the emperor into your colosseum. What's neat about this game is the scoring system, which only tracks your highest attendance rating which is your score. The game feels very balanced as there are various perks for coming in last on a given turn or actually going last in turn order. The game itself moves quickly (it took us a little over two hours to play two games) and is easy to play but it's a little complicated to teach. There are a lot of different bits that do different things and explaining what each one does can be a chore. In the end we found that after the first couple rounds we were able to understand what we needed to do and the game went smoothly.

just bought Axis and Allies spring 1942 edition. I don't know who i'm gonna play with though. none of my friends expressed and interest. There is a local A&A club i could join though.

Pretty well sums up my feelings on the game too. I've played it twice, maybe three times, but don't have much intention of playing again.

Hai guys.

Man it's been a while since I've got to boardgame. The sheer amount of videogameage thats being released these days is taking up all the free time.

That being said, I'm pretty pumped for Stronghold. And finally picking up a copy of Seaside.
