Got one more Gen Con question: Can you sign up for games you wanna learn? (non-tournament events)
Yup. On the gencon catalog excel file, there's a column for experienced required. If you filter for none, you'll see all the events that are there for the beginners. Most of the events I registered for will be first time plays. Also, the vendor booths in the dealer hall are always willing to teach people how to play (they want you to enjoy and buy their games).

Looks like Alchemy will be early May? Rats. Was hoping the CSI April date would hold up. Put RFTG off this pre-order b/c I didn't want RFTG to hold it all up (though I'm sure that will get delayed by 2-3 months, as RFTG expansions seem to do).

Thanks, do you happen to have a link to the file? Going to pick some events for my wife and I this weekend.

It will also continue to get updated as additional events get submitted and approved. So check back often.

Edit: In hindsight, they haven't updated that file yet for all the now registered events since Sunday, so I would search here: https://www.genconreg.com/ that way you can see what's actually available without getting your hopes up for no reason.

Here's what I'm in for for now:

Speaking of co-op, I've been reading a lot about the Republic of Rome which recently got reprinted, and it sounds awesome to me, but it sounds a little intricate to introduce to my group. Is there anything else out there with that sort of co-op but competitive design? Not like Arkham where there's a best player, or Camelot/BSG where there's traitors and loyalists, but a system where every player is competing but also bound to a common group fail state. The idea sounds very interesting to me.

Might be off to discuss this here, but... my best friend and I are collaborating on a boardgame that deals with something exactly like what you're describing. In essence, the players would each take roles similar to Pandemic, but these are based around various city leaders (Mayor, City Manager, Planning Dept. Head, etc.). The idea is that each has abilities and has access to a city revival budget distributed by the governor (not a player). Each is trying to receive the bulk of the budget based on projects they want to use to upgrade the city in various ways. The problem is, they aren't able to complete any project on their own and must have the help of other players. If all projects undertaken fail to achieve certain budget-based goals, then everyone loses regardless of how well any one player does; so it's not always a good idea to grandstand and try to get all the credit for projects or hog all the budget, as your role can only achieve so much. However, you want to finish the game having successfully hit all budget-based goals (everyone wins) - while also making sure that what you personally achieved makes you stand out (you win).

I can't go into gameplay details at the moment, because... well... we're still ironing all of those out.

New order incoming. :D

I just want to say that winning Twilight Struggle as the US via playing the "Poke your opponent in the chest and gain 2VP if you have more Battlegrounds" card is pretty much the most satisfying thing ever.

I'm sure it's dealing with the stuff regarding fan made content for that one publisher getting yanked from BGG.

Since this thread's been so quiet recently, here's my Saturday ON TAP:
-Kingsburg (first time!)
-Dominion Rainbow Edition
-Agricola I Deck

Nothing on tap for the weekend, but I got some RFTG in the other day. Went pretty terribly for me. 2 rounds, neither of which did I end up with a 6 cost development at all. Never got when in my hand that would work for me in the slightest (got the Imperium military one once, towards the end of round 2, when I had no military worlds, rebel or otherwise). Lame.

Brightened up a bit after beating the wife at Twilight Struggle while playing as America though. First win!

On tap for Monday: Le Havre! (or as we call it: "Feesh!").

I still have yet to win at Twilight struggle. My girlfriend kills me matter which side she plays. I came close once taking the game all the way to the end but still got worked. That being said I did beat her pretty handily at 1960 so all is not lost with my political scheming.

Kingsburg was fun. Like most mediumweight worker-placement games it felt about 20m long, but the group really liked it, and the heavy emphasis on dice rolling really differentiates it. I read that the exspansion really improves upon it, so I may pick that up with my next CSI order (for the last RFTG expansion, next month).

Dominion was enjoyable as always. We had two ties out of three games. I just love how quickly that game plays. One of the only great, deep (though not heavy of course) you can bang out so quickly.

So anyone store board games in the garage? I was considering it since I got too many and it's taking up too much closet space. I worry that the garage is not a good place for them and moisture in the air will probably eat away at them?

Just ordered Horus Heresy and Last Night on Earth from Cool Stuff Inc. Kinda sucks that Cool Stuff is best prices for board games, but living in Florida is get charged Sales tax from them and it almost erases most of the discount I would normally get :(

It depends how well insulated your garage is, but my initial reaction would be 'don't do it'. I'm currently ruining two 10,000 piece puzzles by keeping them in the garage, and I'm scared of opening them up to see the damage done.

As for running out of closet space...does your wife really need those dresses? How about all those pots and pans...surely a single iron skillet can suffice? And all those extra sheets and towels...what's the point of them when you only ever use one set at a time? I guess what I'm getting at here is that you might want to rethink your priorities. :D

Played a game of Arkham Horror last night, using the Innsmouth expansion. Was only three of us playing. I lost one character early on (Rex, wasn't able to lift his curse in time, and ended up being sucked into another dimension, where I was promptly Lost in Time and Space...unfortunately, we were going up against Yog-Sothoth, so that equated to being devoured). In the end, we had closed 7 gates, sealed 5 of them, but the Deep Ones woke him, and we ended up losing by a single point. Fun, fun stuff.

Anyone here have any impressions on any of the any following:
-Thunderstone
-Catacombs
-Carson City
-Summoner Wars
From a 2-3p perspective.

edit: just looking for a game or two to swap in to my CSI Alchemy order. Heard good things about Thunderstone but also heard that the theming is uber-nerdy and may drive off casuals which is pretty important to me. Catacombs is a brand new fantasy-themed flicking game that looks pretty fun. Carson City don't know much about but worker placement in the wild west sounds like a fun mashup. Summoner Wars I'm interested in for the 2p possibilities.

I'll play the beta after the work day is over (west coast).

Played some Dominion with the wife last night. Whooped her butt three games to none which is very unusual for me. We are pretty closely matched with her having a slight edge, typically.

We had big card drawers (Envoy, Library, Laboratory, Smithy) on the table, plus Feast. I was able to get epic combos rolling by having a feast first, followed by one of the card drawers.

It was the perfect storm, because Feast also gives the critical +buys, which is often the missing piece of my master plans.

Her mistake was using her first couple 5 gold turns to buy a witch instead of a feast. Witch is a powerful draw to be sure, but it made it hard for her to really get over the 6 gold hump, and only ended up giving me like 3 curses the whole game. Especially after I remodeled a couple curses into moats, which is like salt in the wound.

Wife and I reallllllllllly don't like it. We can't even bring ourselves to play it again to give it another shot. Sloppily designed gameplay, uninteresting cards, lack of real deck building. Not fans at all.

****

Speaking of wife, I just beat her at Le Havre by a scant 6 points. :)

Also, I'm potentially down for Agricola online, but damn it why can't more of these online games be PBEM friendly like RftG and Tigris. Going to be rough finding a time we can all commit to sitting here for a full game.

Thanks for that, won't be getting it then.

What is a good time to play Agricola for folks? I could do Sunday 2 EST or earlier. I'd recommend signing up and playing a solo game just to get a hang of it.

2 est is too early for me, but then again probably a lot of times won't work for me. ;P

Saturday during the morning or day would be good for me for weekend times...

This weekend I finally got a chance to play Chaos in the Old World and Dungeon Lords. I don't think I need to hash out the details of either one, except to say that CitOW made for a nice light wargame (and gave me an excuse to scream "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" every few minutes) and that Dungeon Lords is a perfectly solid worker placement type game elevated by it's incredibly charming design. In both cases, the theme will be what brings me back, especially Dungeon Lords. It's just so damn cute.

Easy enough considering I'm always keeping my BGG profile updated.

My current top 10 at BGG:
#1: Race for the Galaxy
#2: Dominion
#3: Twilight Struggle
#4: RoboRally
#5: Battle Line
#6: Agricola
#7: Galaxy Trucker
#8: Tigris & Euphrates
#9: Arkham Horror
#10: Stone Age

Sorta true!

I DO love Puerto Rico, though. I'm interested in learning Twilight Struggle. I own Through the Ages, though I don't know 100% how to play a full game. Dominion is obviously awesome. I also have Power Grid, but its not my fave.

The hate for Agricola makes up for the rest though haha.

It's not that I despise Euros, I just hate the mix/maxing that so many tend to bring out in gaming. I think someone who makes a mistake should still be able to sweep in and grab a victory. Makes things fun for everyone. I'd rather lose like that, than to play a game where I know I'm going to win as soon as X person does Y mistake.

I agree with that, but most more modern Euros have some balancing in there. Isn't that actually more a problem of AT games though? The only general characteristic of Euros that I tend to disfavor is minimal emphasis on luck. I can barely tolerate a game with no luck, but those games are few and far between nowadays.

Well the mechanics and rules appear to be very smooth and smart, offering lots of second to second decisions, which I like. It's one of the reasons I find CITOW so engaging. The order system has a very cool risk/reward undercurrent, as does the initiative system. There's just enough luck with the cards for it to be exciting, and the production design seems up to FFG's usual standards too. I'll let you guys know in the next few days.

You haven't played Through the Ages yet. Or it doesn't qualify for top 10 status. Either way... You.... you monster!

Here's my 9's and 8's from BGG, sorted into my approximate order:

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization (2006)
Dominion (2008)
Race for the Galaxy (2007)

Agricola (2007)
Twilight Struggle (2005)
Tigris & Euphrates (1997)
The Settlers of Catan Card Game (1996)
Puerto Rico (2002)
Caylus (2005)
Le Havre (2008)
Endeavor (2009)
Citadels (2000)

I haven't!

Citadels is my alternate #10 along with Stone Age. Depends if you're in a ooh pretty game mood or a backstabbing/murdering/stealing mood.

Tanga deal of the day is Mystery Express (yay) plus two packs of card sleeves (meh) for $37 shipped. It's not that much cheaper than anywhere else but it was cheap enough for me to pull the trigger.
