I've got it in my upcoming CSI order.

Also went to Barnes & Noble today, wow their boardgame section is huge now. Fresco, Agricola, Dominion, Seaside, and tons more. Unfortunately no place to play them since there were a bunch of no-goodniks taking up the tables. Did pick up Forbidden Island though. Playing that tonight.

Yeah, that was actually what turned me on to Fresco, I saw it there, looked interesting, and then boardgamegeek'ed it. Now I want.

Since we have alot of "hardcore" boardgame palyers here I would like to know if you have an opinion about Shogun. The game looks interesting. I would really like to know how complex you think the rules are. Is it something that one can easly teach?

Played "shadows over Camelot" for the first time. We had 6 people and no traitor to speed things up. Still a lot of fun, the theme is worked into the game in nice ways. How similar is "battlestar Galactica"? I think the sic-fi theme might go over better, but I know how FFG likes to add a lot of (usually) needless complexity to their games.

Also got the thunderstone expansion. Not played it yet, but the index cards and box storage are AWESOME! Both sets only take up one half (unsleeved) of a box probably 2/3rds the size of the base thunderstone box. Hooray for not having hordes of useless empty space in card game boxes!

Also got the card expansion for small world. Been playing a lot of this on the iPad, so not sure why I bothered getting it for real (probably show up on the iPad soon) but it looks really fun.

Now I'm just waiting for the death angel card game and the castle raven loft game. Nemos war looks cool as well.

I won a game of Power Grid today, but my victory was unsatisfactory because the dude I beat is a sore loser and claimed he didn't fully comprehend the win conditions. From now on we have to hold his hand through every learning game. Or just not play with him. Hmmm.

Have a chance to get some friends to play some games at a birthday party tonight. We have to bring our games and make a case for why we should play them. I think my best chances are with Carcassonne and Fluxx, so I'm bringing those. I'll probably get stuck playing some game like Life our some BS like that though *sigh* I wish I had more gameboardy friends.

Check out boardgamegeek if you don't get an answer here. The reviews there are really good.

That is very unfortunate. Good luck with that. In terms of euro-style, I'd recommend Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne for a super-casual group. Great party games include Time's Up (just played this a bunch on our trip to visit my wife's family), Wits & Wagers (trivia, but actually very fun and quick unlike every other trivia game, also easy to win even if you don't know the answers, which keeps everyone involved), and GAF favorite Say Anything.

Does anyone know if there is a modern equivalent to HeroQuest, the old Milton Bradley game? My 6 yo, wife and I have been playing a lot of Labyrinth (Ravensburger), and the kid loves his loot. I remember playing HeroQuest in high school, and I think it would be perfect for us all to play together. Unfortunately, eBay seems to be the only option ($200!).

I've looked at a bunch of pseudo-modern equivalents like Heroscape, but that is more wargaming/strategy. I'm looking for straight up, simple loot whoring with some monsters to bash.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Probably your best bet is DungeonQuest, an older game originally published in 1985 which fortuitously has been revised by Fantasy Flight Games with a modernized board and bits and is scheduled to be released two days from now- August 25. I've never played the original, but based on descriptions at BGG it's a straight-up lootfest dungeon crawl.

EDIT: Be aware the manufacturer's suggested age range is 13 and up. Now, DungeonQuest is a game that can be played 1-4, and a great deal of the complexity is in "running" the dungeon and setting up the board initially. Actually playing just a character without any other decision making might lower that age range: in other words, you'll probably have to play with him and take on the task of moving bits around, drawing cards, and so forth. I certainly wouldn't expect the average 6-year-old could enjoy this game, but I would say the same about HeroQuest. Whether your child can handle it is your call.

That does look pretty good, thanks. Another thing I found cruising the web is the Castle Ravenloft board game that is due out soon as well. Interesting thing about that one is it's co-op and doesn't require a DM-type role.

i'm not much of a dungeoncrawler myself, but check out (and keep in mind this is a little bit ignoring the age issue):
-descent
-catacombs (dexterity)
-claustrophobia
-doom

Catacombs sounds fun, but it appears OOP already. Must have been a super small run!

I was only 1000 I believe, they confirmed a second print and an expansion but were pushed back due to manufactoring issues (ie, mold in a very little % of their shipment) since they already shipped the replacement pieces I guess it can't be that far away.

That Dominion implementation is awesome btw. Bet it's even better when you're playing on something other than a Droid :lol.

Anyone up for a game around 8 or 9 EST tonight?

Been a busy couple of days.

I played my first game of Arkham Horror over the weekend. We did the main game with the Dunwich Horror expansion and 6 players. The person's house where we went to play it had two long plastic folding tables set up with the game laid out. I was slightly late getting there and it was very intimidating to see all of it spread out in front of me on two tables. Other than some descriptions and reviews, I hadn't read too much about it, so it was nice to have a group who had played it before. I really liked the strategy feel of it because I wasn't expecting that level of co-op play. Having so much of it based on luck was kind of a downer, but acceptable. We had a few gate spawns stopped by seals or other gates, two flying monsters were "In The Sky" when we drew an environment card that said fliers don't move, one monster surge that was really weak, ect. Our Ancient One was Nyarlathotep and we ended up winning by closing all the open gates on the board. I actually got to close the last open gate for the win. Afterward we went ahead and battled the Ancient One to see how it played out and we won that as well. All in all it was pretty fun. Would like to play it again sometime. I don't know that I could play it very often though. Maybe once every month or two at most.

Then I drove to another friends house and played Munchkin with some expansions.

Tonight it's on to yet another friends house to play Hero Quest and/or Carcassonne.

On top of that we have yet another friend who has a copy of Decent and we're talking about starting that sometime as well. I'm going to pick up a game on payday to give us more options. Probably going to go with Settlers of Catan, but I'm still deciding on what's out there and what people in our group(s) want to play.

Just curious -- do you mean that you sealed the requisite number of gates? Because it is extremely rare to win via closing under normal rules.

I'm definitely down to play with you dudes at some point, but probably not tonight.

cool let's see if we can get something together. nights are better for me but i can play on my droid during the day if need be

Yeah, I checked it out earlier (saw Astro playing other people). Very nice implementation. I gave it a whirl in Solitaire using a completely random set. Got a lot of Prosperity cards and felt a little shaky about planning a strategy with Platinum and that gigantic Colony card. Those things are incredibly hard to get without a fantastic money machine... I was also a little uncertain about the rules, i.e. whether Province still ends the game while Colony is out.

Finally got to play on my desktop and wow you can play a game in like five minutes :lol. I almost feel bad for spoiling Prosperity for myself but as I've learned with many games by now playing tabletop is such a different experience anyway.

So there's a text-based online Dominion that has all expansions including Prosperity. On the road, but I've been playing it on my phone. Maybe we can muster some of that old boardgame-thread spirit and get a game together?

I'm down to play. I pretty much teach classes from 8AM until 10 PM Mon/Tuesday this quarter though, so I'm out until Wednesday.

Just in case anyone is interested, there's now Knizia's Samurai on iPhone. 5 bucks but it has online play and is a very solid implementation. Chalk up learning another game on iPhone.

That is correct. Closed, not sealed. We only had two gates Sealed. I sealed the first one with clue tokens and someone else got the second with an Elder Sign. A couple people made the comment that they had never won like that. Seeing as how I didn't have a frame of reference, I guess it didn't really hit me that it was hard to do that? I think I just had a lucky first game. If I get the chance to play again sometime and the game smacks us around some and beats us, then maybe I'll see. :lol

Was looking for my brother-in-law, who wanted to go to bgg.con with his girlfriend, and saw that tickets have been sold out for like months. Wow. So looking forward to it even though it feels much closer than it actually is (ten more weeks -- beh). Only bummer about it is they don't really seem to have any tournaments other than the poker tournament (which I'll definitely play in). The emphasis on open gaming is great, but I did find at PAX that playing tournaments was a great way to break up the day and meet people you definitely wouldn't meet otherwise. It helped that everyone was super-cool, maybe the BGG crowd would be more hardcore/serious in that kind of atmosphere I dunno. Then again there is a limit to super-coolness like the RoboRally tournament mods refusing to play by the correct rules because they didn't know them. :lol

My wife is a history professor who specializes in the Cold War era, so for her birthday, I got her Twilight Struggle. We finally manages to crack it open last night and give it a go. We're both into games and regularly play titles such as: Agricola, Puerto Rico, Lost Cities, Settlers and Carcassone. It took us over four hours to get through a game of TS. Man, that rulebook... It's decently written, but not well organized at all. We "struggled" through and her USSR forces triumphed by playing the South America score card at a good time in Turn 9. I did find a user made "teaching notes" file on bgg.com this morning which will be a BIG help in our next game.

All in all, I managed to get through first-time frustration and enjoy the game. Has one of the best use of theme in a game that I've ever experienced. I think if we can get through the next session smoothly, it will challenge Argicola as our go-to game.

Picked it up this morning, I really like it. I'm getting my ass handed to me by the computer but it's really fun.

I like it a lot and would certainly recommend it. It's not a simple game, but I found it reasonably easy to pick up. There are quite a few rules, but they fit together logically. A single 'practice' game should be enough to get the hang of it.

Just bought Battles of Westeros. Im so surprised about the quality of the game that I've already set my girlfriend up for a couple of games. Hopefully I wont be as bad in it as I was in Battlelore. The dice are always against me.

A few weeks later, and my friends and I are all in love with Arkham Horror. Just love how each game plays out differently.

If only they had been that receptive to Dokapon Kingdom. Too bad that game takes roughly ten times as long as a game of Arkham Horror. :lol

Once it's a little closer to the dates, you'll find a bunch of people looking for people to prearrange games against. A great way to meet people, fill out days "around" games etc. I played an all-day game of Twilight Imperium last year like that, worked out really well.

There's usually a few official tournaments going on, mostly as publicity - there was a Ticket To Ride Dice game one last year for example.

And you know the poker tournament's not for real money, right? :)

Yep I just like the tournament setup because it adds some stakes (albeit imaginary ones). Only real challenge will be I'm already going with three others in tow so will have to make an extra effort to branch out, though meeting gaffers will certainly accomplish some of that.

Our party lost our three week (one play session a week) long Descent quest last night. I was quite sad when the Overlord played his card that forced me to attack another party member (I was rolling all 5 blacks, two greens, a blue and a yellow) and I hit her for 18 damage and she exploded into goo, losing our last Conquest points. :(

I can't believe how much a BGG.con ticket is going for, someone offered me $150 for mine, which I already sold for the price I paid for. I wasn't looking to profit off of it, I just ended up with plans to visit family instead so I couldn't go.

Yeah, and imagine the frenzy when we actually get closer to the date. Seems like they'll have to expand at some point which I don't see as a bad thing at all. Could be like an American Essen one day. :p

Learning Tichu on the iPhone right now. The amount of games coming out on the iPhone is just insane. Tichu doesn't have online play but it's still a good learning tool.

Been toying around with the idea of making a new thread with a new and updated OP talking about the basics of designer games, must-plays, and upcoming releases to maybe draw some new people into the hobby.

They're in the same hotel next year, but they've said they'll be moving to a much larger location at a hotel in DFW airport in 2012, that'll allow a lot more people to come.

Really looking forward to the con, it's a fantastically fun time. This will be my third year.

That's a cool idea.

Just played my first three solo games of DungeonQuest. It's the boardgame equivalent of minesweeper, if you played minesweeper without the numbers.

It's liberating.

Played Power Grid for the first time tonight. Fantastic game. It was a 4 player game and everyone playing it was playing for the first time AND everyone loved it. A very rare set of circumstances in our group.

One guy had to leave halfway through the game, but the rest of us finished. The end was extremely close. If hadn't been for one slight miscalculation on my part I could've won in the last turn, but instead one of the other guys did. I think next time we play we might try the Germany board.

It was one quest or are you on a campaign?
