So Boardgame-Age, I'm searching for a boardgame that must be pretty versatile, anywhere from 4-7 players (or less/more obviously), easily understandable for 12-year-olds, but not too boring for adults, and where the games don't last more than an hour..

What'd be my best bet? =)

I see I was beaten to the Bohnanza and Bang suggestions, so I'll add Citadels. All of these are just card games, and all of them work with larger groups and should be good for the age group.

If you want something for even larger groups, Werewolves of Miller's Hollow is about as light and entertaining as it gets.

Has anybody tried Zombie and/or Cthulhu dice? I've been trying to track down ZD in particular, looks insanely fun. Impressions would be cool if you've played 'em.

I just played them both at PAX yesterday. Cthulhu dice would pretty much make the simplest transition to drinking game ever. Zombie Dice would probably make a pretty good gambling game. I don't see either of them as particularly lasting experiences, though. Good little novelties for when gaming isn't the focus of the evening, or when waiting for additional people to show up for gaming, but not particularly compelling enough to keep me interested.

on tap for tonight (first time) :D

Is that Return of the Heroes? Looks sweet, whatever it is.

Thanks...that's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for; something to do at the D&D table while we wait for everyone to arrive.

Yeah it's basically a storytelling game. Go around, make decisions, have encounters. Sort of like choose-your-own-adventure for adults with some fun gameplay mechanics like talents and statuses thrown in. Have a whole soundtrack for it too. :D

So after chatting with a new friend at Pax yesterday, I've decided to be a bit more active over on board game geek. This came about as I watched him log plays of games via his iPhone. So I'm going to start doing that a bit.

Also inspired by posts in this thread, I've started marking games I'm willing to trade on my profile over there--also partially inspired by wife insisting that I clean out the board game closet before we add new games to it D:

Anyway, If you want to share your BGG profile, I'll friend any of you guys over there.

I'm platypotamus there too.

Yeah, sounds cool...anything like "Once Upon a Time?" I love that game. This looks a bit more like guided narrative, though. Are you playing it 2P or with a group? Might be a good game for my D&D table...

Yes, much more guided than that. Go to a location, have an encounter, make a choice (e.g., steal a horse yourself or get help) and then use an applicable attributes you might have to your advantage (there are a ton). Playing with 3 which is supposedly the best number for this game.

Seems like a good excuse for rebooting this thread, as a matter of fact...so we can keep boardgamegeek ids in the first post, along with the recommendations that seem to come up over and over again.

I nominate AL. :D I know you've talked about doing it before...any interest?

Anyway, here's mine: echoshifting I'll have to update it, I haven't touched it in quite awhile.

Hahah yeah I was just gonna mention how that was something I'd like to put in the first post of a new thread. I actually started drafting it last week and saved it as a Google doc. :lol I'll get back to it tomorrow and post then, including whatever BGG names are posted here. We could also start up a Guild there if that has any benefit.

I just recently picked this up along with Chaos in the Old World (awesome), and Dice Town (fun filler).

I haven't had the chance to play it yet.

And I think it's odd that a game's rule book would imply that the game can be difficult to learn. Especially because it seems like the mechanics are pretty straightforward.
Ahhhh, I've wanted Dice Town for the longest time. I always seem to forget about when it comes time to order games.

Since we are posting our BGG names and collections here is mine. Joeyjoejoeshabadoo

I think my collection is up to date.

Nice. I was actually thinking about doing the same, but didn't plan on getting to it for a few weeks.

Got to play half a game of Dungeon Lords tonight. I did terribly, because I was playing for the full game and then one of the players got too tired to go on, so all the stuff I saved for year 2 didn't help my final scoring.

I <3 this game.

You have WotR Collector's O_O I spent about 30 minutes drooling over unboxing videos when that came out...

Let's be pals
Indeed. It's quite the beauty. Great game, too. I blindly bought it before ever playing, so I dodged a pricey bullet in that sense haha.

My draft BG thread is getting pretty big. So I'm playing around with it a bit and cutting out some of the fat. I also put in for a BGG guild so we'll so if they approve it. Cost 10 GG but I have a ton of that stuff from my joke threads and I figure it'll be a good place to just have all gaffers listed since there's no regular friending there.

Here is the current structure. Comments/suggestions welcome.

What is designer/euro board gaming?
Gateway Games
Next-Step Games
Games for Couples
Online Play
Board Games on iPhone
BGG Usernames/Link to GAF Guild

Tentative:
Upcoming Games
Hot Games

A few ideas (probably not all good ones)

-Perhaps define what to expect from an American-made game vs. a European-made game. I would hate to enforce the stereotype if it wasn't so often true.

-"How to talk like a board game geek:" List of common lingo/gameplay terminology longtime gamers tend to toss around...not so much thinking "Ameritrash" here as I am talking about, say, what we mean by "auction game," meeples, worker placement, etc.

-Name the largest BG publishers and what to expect from their games (i.e., an experienced board gamer would be able to look at a stack of three games they had never heard of and tell you which was FFG, which was Rio Grande, and which was Days of Wonder), or even just list their most popular games.

-Family games/games to play with your kids
or maybe
-GAF's favorite games

-If you like _____, you might like ______. Maybe do that for the most well-known games, like Catan and Carcassonne. This might actually be more useful than family/couples/next step games.

I like the idea of "hot games," if only to just list the most-discussed games in the last few pages of the thread. We definitely go through phases ;p

And I like the idea of upcoming/new releases, if only because it's something I can never keep track of myself! That's quite a bit of maintenance for you, though...

Thanks, I'll see what I can incorporate. As far as updating, I'll keep it fluid. If people are getting use out of the hot lists and upcoming releases and stuff I'm happy to update. If not, I can always change things up.

Played Tales of the Arabian Nights twice the past couple days. Really fun. It's like Arkham but with nothing but encounters. Playing some old-school Gric (no Farmers of the Moor) right now. Also started logging plays on BGG, which I think will be quite useful since we usually do start player based on worst player. Also got our plane ticket for bgg.con!

tonight's gric: all-time high scores for all!

Played Dominion for the first time yesterday. Great game.

Finally opened the BattleLore box and started reading the instruction manual. What do you guys think about BattleLore? Is it any good?
