Bob's job got outsourced to China

A security audit of a US critical infrastructure company last year revealed that its star developer had outsourced his own job to a Chinese subcontractor and was spending all his work time playing around on the internet.

The firm's telecommunications supplier Verizon was called in after the company set up a basic VPN system with two-factor authentication so staff could work at home. The VPN traffic logs showed a regular series of logins to the company's main server from Shenyang, China, using the credentials of the firm's top programmer, "Bob".

"The company's IT personnel were sure that the issue had to do with some kind of zero day malware that was able to initiate VPN connections from Bob's desktop workstation via external proxy and then route that VPN traffic to China, only to be routed back to their concentrator," said Verizon. "Yes, it is a bit of a convoluted theory, and like most convoluted theories, an incorrect one."

After getting permission to study Bob's computer habits, Verizon investigators found that he had hired a software consultancy in Shenyang to do his programming work for him, and had FedExed them his two-factor authentication token so they could log into his account. He was paying them a fifth of his six-figure salary to do the work and spent the rest of his time on other activities.

The analysis of his workstation found hundreds of PDF invoices from the Chinese contractors and determined that Bob's typical work day consisted of:

9:00 a.m. – Arrive and surf Reddit for a couple of hours. Watch cat videos

11:30 a.m. – Take lunch

1:00 p.m. – Ebay time

2:00-ish p.m – Facebook updates, LinkedIn

4:30 p.m. – End-of-day update e-mail to management

5:00 p.m. – Go home

The scheme worked very well for Bob. In his performance assessments by the firm's human resources department, he was the firm's top coder for many quarters and was considered expert in C, C++, Perl, Java, Ruby, PHP, and Python.

Further investigation found that the enterprising Bob had actually taken jobs with other firms and had outsourced that work too, netting him hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit as well as lots of time to hang around on internet messaging boards and checking out the latest Detective Mittens video.

Bob is no longer employed by the firm.

reminds me of that guy who figured out how to completely automate his data entry job, it was more efficient than any of the other employees and netted the guy all of the bonus payments.

USA! USA! It's not a country it's a business. He should be awarded for living the dream and getting to watch cat videos. Honestly give him the slacker reward. He has given millions of us an idea.

I love how aloof Verizon's response was.

"Yeah, we that it was just some elaborate glitch or some shit, but yeah, god damn that was a stupid assumption."

Capitalism at work. I applaud his ingenuity. And I wish to acquire the contact information of this all-star team of cheap programmers so I can do it as well.

Soo.. just cut out the middleman and just hire the Chinese guy and pay hi half of Bob's salary. Win-win for everyone.

This is rather common, especially for IT businesses, their programmers can work long hours and VPN allows everything to be done remotely.

The man gave a job to a man who needed it, while maintaining his salary and dedicating his time and effort for creative pursuits.

This is the future technology promises us.

This is the future of science.

They do exactly the same thing in China. An employee of a big company has his own software development business, when he gets a project, he actually outsources it to his own business employees for cheap and makes profit.

Future is not looking bright for mediocre IT people in western world. Work can be fairly easily distributed around the world and living expenses are way lower in many places with a ton of workforce. Also anybody can learn to code if they can read English and have a internet connection via free online courses.

As a competent, but not amazing college IT graduate, i'm screwed.

That sly motherfucker should of gotten a promotion if anything.

As someone who is currently going to school for IT.

Fuck!

Yeah, outsourcing can be a good idea in some situations, but giving internal access to a foreign company that may not be certified by your own company is just asking for trouble... Especially from China, which has a bad record in industrial espionage.

His only mistake was having his subcontractor use his VPN account directly. If he had them send him the code first so he could "review" it, he would have never been caught.

Depends what you're studying. Tech support jobs will probably be fine as people are always needed to fix shit and set up new machines/servers. Programmers on the other hands are definitely under threat.

Tech support as of right now.

Programmers under threat? I highly doubt it.

Why didn't Bob get the Chinese workers to VPN into his home network where they could use his home computer to VPN into his work? This racquet could've gone on forever undetected!

This isn't really an ingenious thing as much as a breach of contract. Some sorts of development involves security sensitive work so they hire national citizens who go through certain checks and contracts. It's not like the companies never considered that outsourcing would be cheaper.

China does a lot of hacking against the west. It would not be totally surprising if the work was such high quality because Chinese intelligence was making sure that it was top quality so they didn't lose an in. The guy was smart? He's lucky that he didn't end up in guantanamo in a way.

I don't. He's a lazy self-entitled dipshit who was farming potentially sensitive data to china so he could put 0 effort in at work. Nobody should applaud this guy.

Very gutsy and everything, but between giving access to secure systems to a third party and possible illegal outsourcing, this guy should probably face more severe consequences than just the loss of his job. He certainly shouldn't be applauded for his actions either, this is nothing like the guy who automated his data-entry job.

But what about companies that outsource all of their IT to foreign countries? Are these companies' CEO's self-entitled dipshits?

And I can't imagine that every bit of data is encrypted in those cases. The foreign programmers just have to sign some paper that means diddly squat in their corrupt country and they can just access all data.

It just seems that companies can get away with everything and the individual is getting fucked over (as per usual).

this kind of sounds like a made-up story to me in many ways (especially the updated part)

yea the ending to the story is like a bad movie. the guy gets a big promotion, all his data entry buddies that are competent get good jobs, and the useless middle manager boss gets his comeuppance. Normally the exact opposite happens in the corporate world...
