BOMBA? No, just a retailer cashing in on a successful title

Cruzader said:
How do you guys pronounce BOMBA? Like as 'bomb-ah' or 'bomb-ae'? Lol

i ask because in english, its sounds so stupid. Im bilingual and i read it in spanish whish makes more sense. Bomba means bomb, literally. So to tank, lol. But has no meaning in english?

sorry bout ot. Just curious.

Bombay

I notice a lot of people saying that bomba just means deal, ok that's fine, I guess we won't see anyone calling a title 'bomba' in npd threads any more after it has had poor sales, jolly good.

Welll mostly its a joke, but sometimes there are genuine bombas out there. We're only doing a public service by calling attention to it.

Ah yes, bomba is common knowledge.

Almost 33% drop by the 2nd day, wow.

Kintaro said:
Wow. Second day price drops. $40 is still $20 too expensive for what looks like a "me-too" FPS. Rental time.

KuwabaraTheMan said:
I didn't even realize this was out yet. I think that says a lot about the stellar job they've done here.

NullPointer said:
At this rate I'll wait three more days and then buy it.

diffusionx said:
This is why I don't buy games on day one. Ever.

Full Recovery said:
Why would they drop the price like that? It just screams "I have no faith in this IP". It undermines all of the marketing and hype they had going for them at THQ.

megamerican said:
Gotta love the hysterical emphasis on pre-orders followed by the second day price cuts. You essentially reserved a slot to be gouged $20 by THQ.

While you COULD argue Homefront ended up being deserving of the BOMBA title, let's not point and laugh at the OP, considering the majority of people in that thread thought that this second day price cut WAS indicative of a bomb.

Half of the people you quoted are just people who think buying full price is a scam when this kind of price cut is assured. Only half of them seem to even be addressing the game's performance :p

most of those quotes aren't even alluding to bad sales

I have a better idea: let's point and laugh at the OP.

Do I really need to pull MORE quotes from that thread? The hate was strong until it was revealed that Amazon/Wal-Mart do this pretty frequently.

Well, it was the day after launch, so I doubt sales were widely known. I think it actually had pretty strong initial sales.

lol, you people are ridiculous. I made this thread not for those who see BOMBA as a joke, but for those who take this seriously.

Also BOMBA became a joke not so long ago - only after some games which had "bombed" in GAF's collective opinion sold well afterwards.

I've been here for nearly 6 years, and even knowing the joke, every time I see that word, I think the game has been a sales failure...

Except Homefront really did. It'd been advertising since at least December 2010 with a massive ad campaign and they needed 3 million in sales to break even. It was not what THQ was hoping for.

You will say bomba. Just imagine if 3DS gets a price cut, we'll have a million bomba threads all over the place.

Thank you.

Coming on 4 years myself and have always read it as that myself.

Why are there so many BOMBAs lately? What the fuck is that supposed to mean?
It means a combination of price competition between a host of retailers and further acknowledgment from consumers that $60 for a new game is too expensive.

borghe said:
why does it matter what they think.

not that I find the bomba threads particularly funny.

but who cares what people think.
The developer cares what people think, as they should.

Public perception is important when you're marketing a product.

Umm. Homefront did not bomba. It sold way more than it should have.

People can't tell when its used playfully for a great deal and when it's used in regards to (perceived) performance?

Out of all annoying words on GAF, I think Bomba is slowly creeping into the top 2. I haven't decided the other one in the top 2 yet :P

inb4 someone quotes me and makes bomba jokes

I agree, the word "bomba" is very hurtful. I invest my hard earned money in games and I support the ones I want on launch. It's sad to see people celebrating that my favorite devs will get less money for their games. Thread makers, publicly apologize for the use of the word "bomba" or you can kiss your business goodbye.

People are mocking this thread, but GAF was frothing when Homefront dropped in price the day after it released in the Homefront BOMBA thread. You'd be surprised.

You bette believe I was pissed about that............ and the fact I bought Homefront.

Its the people who can't tell when bomba is used as a joke that the OP is complaining about. Not the people actually using bomba as a joke. Pretty fruitless pursuit regardless.

To be fair, in the MK thread I saw a few people acting like this was an indication that MK sold poorly.

If I didn't mention BOMBA, people would still think MK is selling poorly because the game is going to be 50% off next week. So it doesn't really matter.

Ah gotcha.

I agree then. Who cares what people think. That's their problem.

If "BOMBA" is widely known as a joke, there are a lot of people using it wrong. Just look at the Weekly Box Office thread in Off-Topic.

It can be used as both. Which is why people often confuse themselves on which version is being used. Thats when using context clues come into play, and one can decide which bomba is happening.

I'd just like to say that as someone who was not aware of the double context, this thread is not bomba.

is it maybe the publishers/devs get some money instead of gamers buying used copies and they getting no cut at all? At least this way they get some share due to more sales?
